I know some people who are very fanatic of penny pinching. They'll gladly take airships and run everywhere to save a few gil, constantly chastising me for wasting gil while I reply "Opportunity cost."
Though, I'm the gillionaire, and they're scrapping around in the couple mil range.
How much gil would you be saving?
RPers use them too.
I like to use them when I'm already in cities and going to another one. More so when going to Ul'dah since you can go to Gold Saucer from any city for free, and from there another free trip to Ul'dah.
People use Airships. I do myself occasionally. If Im going from say Gridania to Limsa I its about 300 gil cheaper to spend 1 minute getting to the Airship and using it instead. I don't think it was intended to try and bring life to anything. Infact I think its actually been requested a few times that Ishgard get added to the Airship routes.
Not sure why it would be an issue. Adding a new Airship route takes almost no resources from development and has no real drawbacks. Its not like its supposed to be a really big deal. I mean you could argue there is an issue with Eorzea being lifeless but this particular thing has nothing to do with that.
Would you prefer they didn't add the route at all? Why?
It's just fun sometimes.
Also those times when I've literally spent all but maybe 200 gil. A few months ago I had bought something, and I went to teleport out of my neighborhood when suddenly "not enough gil" pops up. I freaked out for a while; borrowed some gil from a friend for a little while.
Well, no, it has no real drawbacks to being thrown in given the main source of travel(teleporting). It just seems really pointless in the grand scheme of things. It's just there. Would I prefer them not adding the route? I'd prefer it have more meaning than what it does now, if that makes sense.
I'll take an airship if it's right near me just to save 200 or 300gil.
But I won't go out of my way to take one.
Before I hit level 50 I would take airships and run / chocobo almost everywhere. It was my way to get into a saving money mindset.
Even now I try to think about the most cost-effective way to do just about anything.
I think that's why I was able to save so much gil. Just being careful about spending. Even the little things.
Have to start somewhere.
Step 1: level tank
Step 2: do roulettes
Step 3: Profit (approximately 100k gil)
Option 2:
Step 1: Level Botanist
Step 2: Hit trees
Step 3: Profit
All of it. If you set your Home point to Limsa, you can get anywhere for free. Return for getting to Limsa, airships to Gold Saucer are free, airships from Gold Saucer to Ul'dah are free, the continent can be crossed on foot.
Takes a lot of time though, tbh. Wouldn't recommend it if you highly value your time.
I don't, so I'm generally content running around like a pleb. Plus I like to keep an eye out for any noobs struggling along the way. And sometimes you can even spot the bots grinding away.
Lol, both options you listed done. Maybe server makes a difference. The profit I got from leveling tank, leveling, lancer/dragoon, cutting trees, leveling carpenter making things, selling, got me about 400k in a week. I don't know maybe I'm just used to getting millions in seconds on other mmo's, not used to this market quite yet.
Airships have saved my ass getting home when i made a major impulse buy and couldn't afford to teleport back.
I'd take them if it was an actual instanced zone I can sightsee from...and not just a zoning cutscene...
Because not all of us can afford to pay 500+ gil a pop, or want to sit and wait 1-5 minutes while riding the chocobus (To be fair, it's been a long time since I've ever rode an airship, but, it's there). Crazy, I know. But, we're out there.Quote:

I think this is more a relic of 1.0 than anything else really, beside the oblivious world building and such.
I don't know about you but personally I don't want to run all across eorzea to get to all cities on level 15
Adding the airship routes to Ishgard is mostly just for story purposes. If you remember, at the start of Heavensward, Ishgard was sealed off from the rest of the world. No one from the other stretches of Eorzea was allowed into or out of Ishgard territories.
The airship routes being opened doesnt just affect the players, but the world. The people living in Ishgard, and the people living in the other various scattered regions of the world can now use the airships to travel. In other words, thanks largely to all the duty we have done for Ishgard, we have caused them to lower their barriers, open the borders, and allow people in.
While the airships may be useless to a great many of US, adding airship routes was more symbolic than practical. It's just a bit of world building. This IS a role playing game, afterall :P
This is all fine and dandy. But if it was just for symbolic purposes, why exactly was it allowed for actual -Players- to utilize these routes? It would have served the same "symbolic" purpose by just saying these routes opened up to the public(even if it'll be overshadowed by the fact of recent story development).
And really, I cannot fathom how anyone could have so little gil to not afford teleporting unless you LITERALLY just spent every last piece of gil and then tried to go somewhere. D:
Oh, you mean like how people suggest a million ways to force people to walk instead of teleporting for the sake of immersion? Sorry, but I got things to do and I was already immersed by airships the first time.
Yes. You know. Actual transportation. What's the point in making such a beautiful world when you are in no zone for more than 2 minutes UNLESS you're doing some sort of quest. Quick and easy? So let's create more face roll stuff because we have things to do guys. Let's keep nerfing things so we can get by it fast because we have -things to do-. Right? Right?
Please. Add some life into this game. It can start somewhere. Something as simple as actually making you stay in a zone for more than 1 minute.
For starters, you have to atune before you can port and the airships are the quickest means for intercity travel. Next, gil is an issue for some players. When I joined, one of my FC mates offered to give me a million gil, and I refused it because I wanted to learn how to acquire it on my own. Many players would not do the same and take the gil, resulting in never learning how to acquire their own funds and struggling when what they want/need is out of their means. Kind of like throwing a zoo animal into the wild and expecting it to know how to hunt for itself.
Next, gil rewards are very minimal in the beginning, I definitely remember not having the luxury of porting liberally like I do now at lv15 when I got access to airships. Nopee.
Then you also have players like me, who hoard gil lol. I still take airships to the related city of my objective for the cheaper ports all the time. The difference in time is definitely not worth what you save in gil lol. We're talking seconds opposed to minutes. Not to mention whatever objective you're doing will likely replenish the port cost. So I obviously take them for another reason. It's a nice little break to check the notifications on my phone :p
