Do we really need Alphinaud?

He doesn't even do anything important but always tags along with us, stating his irrelevant opinions but didn't help in combat.

Can't SE just demote him to smaller role in a sidequest or something?

Or just kill him already.

Why such hate?

Alphinaud is central to the plot and driving the story forward. This is amplified by the fact that the player character does not speak, so sometimes Alphinaud is used in that place.

Never really understood the hate for him tbh.

Clearly you haven't been paying attention to the story, then. He's one of the few protagonists that has undergone a lot of character development since his original introduction. He has also fought alongside us on multiple occasions and is responsible for the push to save Estinien.

Either way, the irrational hatred some people bear towards fictional characters is pretty creepy.

Am I the only person who likes Alphinaud? I think his eagerness and quick thinking is part of his charm. He's no Louisoix by any means but I don't know he's got something.

Just think of him like a party member that moves things along for the story. The type of party member that does very little but goes through the most growth. He can also be considered our "voice" in some respect since all we do is nod and go along with whatever plan others come up with. Things will really get interesting with him when his sister returns to the spotlight of the story. Those two siblings show more character together.

And about killing him off, yeah [SPOILERS] Minfilia already filled that quota.

If he needs more experience he should finish developing himself before trying to lead people in wars. The war that determine the future of the nation/continent is not a school for him to become an adult. And why would national leaders even listen to this brat to begin with? It doesn't make sense.

Character development does not mean "becoming an adult" it is used to describe the narrative growth of a character as a result of experiences/plot. It's central to any decent story telling.

I am really jealous of alphy and his sister. When I started this game I wanted to make my character like theirs, before I even saw them. Basically wanted a half Elzen. But that height on a male Elzen with less of the ear slider would have been what body type I wanted. So much of my dislike comes from that.

I know he is supposed to be our voice in a way, but that doesn't stop me from making comments when he volunteers to do something. I think you mean the WoL will do this, right Alphy?

I don't know about you guys, but if there's going to be a character representing the voice of a force such as myself, "the Warrior of Light", then I'd expect that person to be a little more than a spoiled, self-entitled lickspittle.

I know of so many people who really want to see Alphinaud gone. He's really one of the worst characters SE has ever developed, and even his sister has more balls than he does. Down with the brat, I say!

If you want to talk about useless characters, Yda and Palpaymo get my vote.

When was the last time a leader in the real world actually fought in a battle. Would be nice if they had to, both our president and congressmen, bet there'd be less fighting.

Not very typical for them to fight though wouldn't you say. There are always exceptions. He doesn't really need to fight in my opinion.

Nope. She's better than her brother but not so much.

I say we kill off about 90% of the game's NPC's. They haven't been helping me at all in my battles. Useless.

This is surprising to me as I was just thinking this morning about how much more I like Alphinaud now. Yeah, he was arrogant as heck in ARR but he's changed so much. He acknowledged how badly his attitude jacked things up and vowed to do better. He actually accompanied you on your journey AND was a competent ally in battle. He was willing to put himself into danger to stand up for those weaker than him. He was even willing to sacrifice himself to save Estinien if that's what it took. Everything that he asked you to do, he was right there next to you as you did it.

I'm kinda hoping he eventually takes over the Scions.

He is way to active to take over the Scions, but I could see his sister taking over the Scions. I think Alphinauds place is by the WoL on the field.

Stories don't require all the characters to be perfect for everyone. I like Alphinaud, but like every other character, he's just a piece to the overall story - he's already served purpose at key points (he played a massive part in the responsibility of the Crystal Braves incident) and will continue to unless he ends up dying for whatever reason. He's meant to be how he is, if you don't like him then that's fine but it doesn't mean he needs to be written out of the story.

Who's weaker than him?

I was surprised that he didn't break some bones for jumping off that dragon he was riding.

I am curious about why you found Alphinaud in ARR being "arrogant as heck" ? I've never found him arrogant lol To me he was naïve and idealist, not arrogant

I know some other characters in FF games that are useless tag a longs that really don't contribute anything. I don't like Alphinaud much either but he's a decent mouth piece for the player, I don't dislike him so much that I'd wish death upon him though.

I thought he got really arrogant when he started up the Crystal Braves, and that comment about you being "his" Warrior of Light with the implication that you were his to order about as he pleased....the big red cherry on top.

In terms of character growth, Alphinaud has absolutely come a long way, and he is working hard to not only help Eorzea but also to help the people he's come to value on a personal level. He's just a kiddo, why do you expect him to be flawless?

I can think of far, far more annoying and useless NPCs across the years. Alphinaud has been out on the field pretty often since HW and is trying to get stronger. The upstart teenager trope is typically picked on, but Alphinaud is doing a great job of being a deconstruction of the ridiculously young, flawless hero type that so often heads up RPGs. He's made plenty of mistakes and failed at his goals to save the world, and now he's trying to find meaning and make a difference in the best ways he can.

Honestly, some people will hate on any character just to have someone to hate...

Have to agree with this, as well as since then he has become MUCH better. The kid's smart, but now that he has some real world exp he's doing quite a bit better. Maybe whoever he teaches he can even keep to a different path that leads them to these lessons without the pains he had to endure to learn them himself.

Tataru is more a burden than Alphinaud imho. She's always getting in trouble when trying to 'help'.
She even made clothes for Alphinaud, Y'sthola, and herself. I can't believe she didn't made me some after all I've done for her :mad:

Just kidding, I love both Tataru and Alphinerd <3. His development has been great, and we've both come a long way.
He's definitely not the same Alphinaud he was in 2.55. We've only been with Alphinaud for a short while (well, not so short in story time), I'm sure he'll be growing to be one of the most badass characters in FFXIV.

Also I'm glad Minfilla is not around, I couldn't stand her :D

Excuse me? Alphinaud has bigger balls than his sister; he has fought more battles than Alisaie while she plays hide and seek, and when she gets caught, she runs away. So until then, Alisaie is the one who needs to step her game up.

Haha, same here! Minfilla definitely has been my least favorite character so far. Probably because she has been so damn needy and forgets that we have a LS for communication at our disposal.

OC wise: yes. Alphinaud is needed. The kid has changed into something greater than the petualent child he was in 2.x. I'll take him over any other Scion of the week.

In game wise: More than you might think. The WoL is practically legendary, that is true. but even legends need friends, and when you are that well known, its hard to know who your real friends are, the ones you don't mind when the works' done and the heroic mask can come off. Alphinaud and Alisaie, in one form or another, have been with you since the beginning. For the WoL, bonds that go beyond their destiny and fame are not a constant presence. How many people do they "let their hair down" around, lorewise(the fc and all threapists within novice network do not count)? I'm not sure what to call it that would be different from friendships, but without those bonds that are past the adventurer and hero the WoL has become, the burden of the job would eventually overtake them.

I hope in the future they build up his character only to have the WOL fail to save him and he dies in the end.
