Eorzea is a continent, one of three. The planet itself is called Hydaelyn.
From source.Quote:
Eorzea is one of the three continents that make up one giant land mass of the planet Hydaelyn. Consisting of Aldenard and its surrounding islands, Eorzea contains several independently governed city-states that have a long history of war and alliances. The few that have lasted longest are the thalassocracy of Limsa Lominsa, the commercial sultanate of Ul'dah, and the forest city-state of Gridania. Though they have warred amongst each other in the past, the powerful and aggressive Garlean Empire has begun their slow advance on the city-states, making the current situation in Eorzea that of an uneasy alliance.
The continent is Aldenard, the large island Limsa's on is Vylbrand, Aldenard and Vylbrand together are known as Eorzea, and Eorzea is one large region in a world called Hydaelyn. (My spelling on the latter may be off.)
I have my own embarrassing questions...
Eorzea: "ee-OR-zee-uh" "or-ZAY-uh" or what?
Leve: "leev" or "lehv"
Garlean: "GAR-lee-in" "gar-LAY-un"
Hydaelyn: "HI-duh-lin" "hi-DAY-lin" "hi-DAY-uh-lin"
Consensus (Can I have it?)
I'll post more as I think of them.
"Leave", because it's a derivation of the Middle English word that evolved into the modern English word 'leave' - you can see traces of this sense remaining in phrases like "by your leave". It basically means 'permission'. (Also I /think/ in Japanese it's referred to using katakana that wind up being pronounced as 'leave' as well, but I'm not 100% sure on this.)
I think of it as "leh-vee" but more often than not my pronunciation is wrong on funky words.
DH..wow i finally found you =D =D =D =D
i can't believe i found a fellow Kashuan player on here..and not only that, a one of my top 6 friedns too ^^
I agree with Alerith on the correct pronunciation. You coulda asked me in-game, i woulda told you...and i'd given you a hug too :-)

oh bye the way. maintanance is over so you better get logged back on so i can give you your hug =D
wait....did they do maintanance yet O.o
What was the maintenance for?
leve is pronounced "leave" not only because of it's English etymology but also because the Lodestone presents it as such. A hint to the pronunciation can be found on the official site

XIV just seems to have to many vowels to close together.
Eorzea, Hydaelyn, Garlean, etc.

Does anyone know what the other 2 continents are called?
Good question... I was just wondering that...
Some ppl say that Eorzea = Aldenard and others say that Eorzea = Aldenard + The island where limsa is.. still confused
its really a dream of a dream of a god who thinks its a normal guy who is playing a game but really isnt
lol... stop smoking that
Leves are "lehv"
Eorzea ee-or-zeh-ya
Garlean is just garlic. gar-lee-an
Planet is Hydaelyn.
On it are three continents, Eorzea, Garlemald, and one unnamed one far to the east. They are all connected to each other by land bridges, so it's really one huge Pangea-like land mass.
Eorzea is made up of the main land of Aldenard, the island Vylbrand, and a slew of smaller islands like the Cieldales.
Pretty sure that's all we know at the moment.
Map of Eorzea
Eorzea is a continent while Aldenard (The Black Shroud, Thanalan, Coerthas, and Mor Dhona) and Vylbrand (La Noscea) are areas within that continent
The only other continent we know of is the Garlean Empire's continent, but I don't think we have a name for the continent they're on (though we call their nation Garlemald).
I say poe-tay-toe you say poe-tah-toe
It's however you want to pronounce it. Everyone perceives things differently, does that make them wrong and you right or them right and you wrong?
Nop. But it's fun to compare the way ppl read stuff =P
hmmmm.... isn't ala mihigo a continent?
Ala Mihgo is a city-state in the Gyr Abania region. A little bit northwest of Gridania. It's still a part of Aldenard/Eorzea.

I think It was mentioned that there was a North Continent and East Continent mentioned too.
I used to pronounce Eorzea as 'nausea' without the N until a kind friend corrected me. >.<
...I have to wonder, where does all this mis-information about Eorzea being a continent come from? Eorzea is a big region. Asia, Europe, America, Eorzea. There's your comparison.
And to one of the above posters (yeah, I'm lazy), continents can't have big island areas separated from the main land by a big sea and still be called the same continent. Continents are continents. I think you should brush up on your geographical terms.
The main continent in Eorzea is Aldenard, and in addition there's a big island to the side called Vylbrand. The world is Hydaelin. There are also other continents in the world, but their names are unknown as far as I remember (although some names of the countries are known). The Garlean Empire is a hugely bloated country off on the continent to the north-east.
Wow so much wrong in the above post. When was the last time you took a geography class?
Asia and Europe? Both continents!
There are seven: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. How do you not know this?
Also, Japan? It's an island, a part of the CONTINENT OF ASIA.
Hawaii, an island belonging to the country of USA, so technically a part of the CONTINENT OF NORTH AMERICA.
Both of your arguments are just so wrong and completely invalid, I weep for the intelligence of the average person.
tldr: Eorzea is a continent, and that includes the island of Vylbrand.
Eorzea is the home land for the Elezen the other 4 race came from islands around the world.
