How does one "waste" a limit break?

FWIW, I'm incredibly stressed right now, so hopefully I'll take any criticism of my action in here positively later, instead of negatively like I am now.


Trial Roulette dumps me in Bismarck Hard. Ok, funny after having spammed EX so much for that dumb bird. I'm SMN. Other DPS are MNK, BLM, and NIN.

The fight's going okay, if a bit slow. The Sanuwa's kind of have me worried about an impending wipe but we down them fast enough. Maybe it's lvl sync. Or people's gear. I don't know.

After the Vanu adds spawn, we lose the MNK to falling off. Thinking back, maybe he got stunned in that one pushback AoE. So now we're struggling pretty bad. DKs are up before adds are down, and I and someone else fire and a few of us start in on the corona.

We repeat this twice. After the second time, I noticed limit break is being called out by multiple people. I see we have LB3. So, considering:

we were a dps down and,
barely taking care of adds and Bismarck this whole time,
and the bar can't fill if we're at lb3

I fire off Teraflare on the next set of adds. Bam, I get railed on. We kill adds, fire off DKs one last time, finish off Bismarck, and two more comments before everyone leaves:

"for future reference, you're supposed to lb the corona not the adds"
and
"don't have downs and waste limit breaks"

So... what are your thoughts? The "downs" comment got me more than anything, given I do have issues with depression and anxiety that may stem from some sort of deeper mental problem that hasn't been diagnosed yet.

I think you didn't do anything wrong. You used your judgement and the fight was won.

Yea back when Bismarck was actually current content then yea the LB3 was for his back and should have been used by one of the melee but since everyone is wayyyy over geared for that easy fight then who cares when you used it I'm sure he still died in under 6mins and if he didn't that means dps was really bad...since Ravana takes about 4mins now lol

in most cases the boss always gets lb'ed but sometimes it's a specific add or group of mobs that either stress a fight or could cause a wipe

If you had wiped, sure. but you finished the fight.

I like to interpret the first comment as trying to be helpful. It's true that people (usually) prefer to use the LB on the Corona. That doesn't necessarily matter in hard, but y'know. I guess they might have been trying to be helpful. They might not have known you had so much experience with Extreme mode and so forth.

The second comment, however, was unnecessary and needless. I wish SE was harsher about punishing people for saying rude things, but the best you'll probably get is being told you should put that person on your blacklist.

Try not to let the random comments of keyboard warriors get to you. It's easy to be super rude when no one knows who you reaaaaally are. In the world of MMOs, you're going to encounter a lot of people like that. :(

If you'd like some friendly affirmation, I think you made a good judgment call with your decision to just use the LB, especially since no one else was doing so. Why let it go to waste?

You made the right call so don't worry about it too much. Since mostly LB3 should be use on Bismarck, but since you down a DPS killing those adds sometimes take longer than expected. We need as much DPS as we can so that we don't waste a DK and chance to deal some damage to Bismarck.

Down a DPS and struggling to get through the add phases? Your decision was spot on. The people criticizing it in the moment are idiots. When the ninja didnt use the LB on the 2nd corona phase, your using it to speed up the subsequent add phase was 100% legit. Some people just get SO hung up on only using LB as a finisher that it breaks their tiny brains to see it intelligently used in any other way.

TL/dr? Dont stress, you did fine.

Or you can also just take away your chat box in the HUD.
There's no reason ever to save an LB in non end-game content, there's no enrage and in the end the difference of time for the clear would be seconds, you just ended up playing with a guy who believes he's an elitist or some shit in an easy fight.
Since it was in roulette I would uess it wasn't Expert Bismark, so your team shouldn't even need an LB, it's really just a matter of saving 15-20 seconds, nothing important or anything. ^^

People get way too upset regarding LB use. It's usually the people who can't think on their feet and will follow the book 100% down to wherever it was written it's important to use it when a boss has 4% HP left.

People who wanna AOE LB large pulls in dungeons, or use it to generally speed something up are always great imo and generally earn my comm.

As for your question, wasting a LB would be hitting nothing. I mean, perhaps if you guys didn't have the ability to kill Bismarck yourselves on his next capture, then yeah. But you made a call and that call was right. We need more people like you, Ninster. People that can process a situation as it happens rather than after it happens.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Seems like I don't have anything to worry about. As for my being stressed over this, it was the cherry on top of a bad day for me. Any other moment I would've just taken the comments as nothing.

LB is like uber in TF2. Use it early, use it often. The only wasted LB is the one you hold on to when you could have used it to clear the fight.

You did the right thing and by the sounds of it the group was barely capable of killing adds, soo they would have needed to be critiqued instead, lol

It's more likely they just completely missed from the beginning with their aim. I have aimed at bosses with ranged or caster limit break and then had the boss move out right after and it still hits.

When the AOE appeared for the LB, the boss was still inside it. However the boss moved out about 3 seconds afterwards and the Bard didn't move to interrupt. I do suppose that lag could've been a problem though.

Only wasted LB is if you do it in an invulnerable phase of the boss or like in Ravy in shieldphase where you have that difference of doing 1-2% in shield to 8-10% in swordphase...
Well and if the mobs were dead anyway :p

Soooo many melee refuse to use LB anyway (My stacks, My BOTD, My Huton ^^). And in a HM shouldn't matter at all and even in all curret content everything about LB use is optional... many ways lead to a kill :)

You did nothing wrong OP you did all right by using the LB at all (plus the adds can make you lose the island)

Sounds like a fair judgement call. I'm amused I made a melee cry because I as bard used a LB. We were all waiting on the melee to use it - someone called out limit break - we wait 30s - nobody uses it. I pop it. One of the melee goes "no!!!!".

It's like seriously? Just use it next time don't sit on it when it's lb3 at 40%... If lucky you'll get a LB1 for your flashy finish.

If it makes you feel better, recently I saw a REAL waste of a limit break. I was in Brayflox normal. Healer used LB on second boss. We kindly informed him that healer LB1 is a waste and should be saved for the DPS to use. Last boss, he wastes the LB again.

The guy also didn't heal me (as tank) past 50% for the WHOLE dungeon. No comms for him.

Ive done the exact same thing as the OP on Bis Hard, sometimes a judgement call is needed, if you have the DPS to kill the corona normally but not the adds before another set spawns, use the LB. I got yelled at as well, we won, i was right.

Once I was in a roulette(for Amdapor HM) back when it was part of the Expert set and I was a Bard matched with another Bard. Throughout the run he was mouthing off about songs and I thought he was just the loud and obnoxious type that liked to type out his every thought, so I paid little heed. It wasn't until 3/4s of the way through the dungeon when it became apparent he was speaking to me that I realised he was upset that I didn't have Army's Paeon up the entire time to fund his apparently terrible TP management. He literally wanted me to cut my damage by 20% for no reason whatsoever and he and his cronies laughed when I calmly explained that it was an unnecessary waste of dps... because "lolbrddps".

Moral of the story is, you have to learn to live with the fact that such levels of stupidity exist on the internet to the point of apathy. Though I am certain that not a soul exists that has truly mastered such a skill in all of computing history.

"After careful analysis of the situation, I believe that the LB would best be used for this purpose and at this time. Of course, I would hate to unilaterally decide this for the entire party, so I shall await unanimous agreement on this matter before pulling the trigger."
...That would be absurd.

What's great is when the bard LB kills the boss and they're still going "No!!".

If it were up to me, we would use AoE LB in every piece content where there are 2 or more targets.

What am I saying--it is up to me. Everybody else is the problem.

Bismarck HM needs one pull with LB or two pulls without LB. Melee fucked up so you got to pick up the slack.

You made the right call. If you wiped before making it to corona, a melee LB wasn't going to do much good.

The LB calls were most likely for the NIN that didn't do anything at the 2nd round on the boss for sure.
Pretty much if they used it on the 3rd time, the boss wouldn't have lived through the animation anyway and the LB damage may not have even been applied =-=a

More of a waste of LB3 imo if that had been the case.
