3.3 and gear question

I'm finally in the position to make my gear and tools, which I have been doing. I've got nearly all the offhands done, half the mainhands, and my LW is almost complete. Then I hear about 3.3 coming soon and I have to ask:

Should I hold on overmelding my gear atm? I'd hate to waste the gil to overmeld everything and have it all be replaceable in a couple months. =X

It's pretty much guaranteed you're going to need to overmeld your gear to craft the new stuff. Also, the crafting materia market is only going to get worse the closer we get to 3.3 since everyone is going to try and "catch up" at the last minute. Do it now, imo.

Depends on how they give us the new gear. Most likely, new gear will be crafted, in which case you'll need the melds to be able craft the new stuff. If you know someone else who is geared and willing to craft it for you, I'd hold off.

I'd at least get the materia you need ready (considering a reasonable amount of failure). If you want to be geared up now then do it now. If it doesn't matter then hold off. Whether the new gear is crafted or purchased (or both again) you may need at least some melds, though it's possible you won't need to be completely overmelded. It may be red scrip gear where you turn in tokens plus a (probably new) counterfoil that you can only get by having pretty decent gear/ melds already. Obviously if it's crafted the requirements will be set pretty high as well. Right now it's just a bit tough to say how high.

I believe there was mention of adding in a new way for us to get t4 materia which will hopefully reduce the cost to do your melds. It's a gamble, but I've been selling my t4s now in hopes that I can get them back later for free or at a lower price. It was stated that the method to get our t4 would not be the beast tribe method but would be discussed before 3.3 launches.

I don't blame you. CP +4 goes for 200k a piece on my server currently. xD

It's way too costly on ultros as well. Cp +4 is around 180-220k depending, but control +4 is almost always at 300k. I've been spirit bonding my crafting gear while fishing and gathering. It averages out to 500k profit on head/hands/legs/feet plus whatever I'm collecting every 70 minutes. It's not insane profits, but materia sells faster than crafted goods for me, plus I enjoy doing it.

On my server, CP 4s are usually 200k when I look. Control 4s have finally come down to the 300-400k range from being 400-500k since 3.2 dropped.

you can't craft current lvl 3 star without melds already :). I think new stuff will be made into lvl 4!! (if not 4 then I hope they have some serious lvl 4 items needed to be crafted.....else why bother upgrading...)

There are examples of things having gone both ways. There were times where you had to meld to produce the top end recipes. Then there were other times when you could already produce top end recipes, and melding only future-proofed your ability to produce top end recipes.

all the examples of the latter are before the introduction of specialization; with the few exception of pre mats and workshop mats.

I'm in a similar dilemma - finished levelling all the crafting classes to 60 the very day of the live letter. I'm capping red scrips every week but I haven't spent any of the tokens nor upgraded any gear beyond the Chimerical Felt/Serpentskin/Adamantite stuff.

They did say the old gear is going to be needed to craft the new gear, but that's probably only true if you are a LTW or WVR and definitely won't be true if you are an ARM, ALC or CUL. Even materia are better off sold since some new way of obtaining them will be coming soon...

Honestly this sucks. Waiting two months to continue progress as a crafter is miserable and buying class-specific gear now that's just going to become unnecessary soon or is for classes I don't even intend to specialise in (I don't plan to be either WVR or LTW specialist) feels like an unconscionable waste of resources.

They\\'ll probably require grade 3 dissolvants, or a new version of holy/hallowed water, and for some pieces an ingot or two.

As for requiring an unconscionable waste of resources....welcome to crafting?

why ppl are expect that the new gear will be better than the old one?
maybe the new gear just for glamour or just lower or even same gear lvl.
maybe just use items which easier to get :3
i mean the new gear right side ilvl 180 just release it would be stupid do release already the next step of higher lvl gear so soonish.

or did i miss some clear details?

New gear that is not an upgrade would prevent them from putting in recipes that have higher stat requirements. We are nearly topped out with penta-melded i170, as it is, and are able to only exceed the 3 star stat requirements by a small, minor amount.

Either the new gear is 3 star stuff that is a clear upgrade to the i170/i180 (assuming same degree of melding) OR they are going to give us another new set of crafting/gathering gear when they come out with 4 star recipes.

You did miss some clear details. It was stated in the live letter that 3.3 would see an ilvl increase for crafters and gatherers in the form of new crafted sets.

and the current gear DID NOT just come out.... we got it bk in 3.05? 3.1?; that recent stuff added in 3.2* are the vendor versions for the broke...i mean causal players (inferior stuff).
