FFXII style Target Lines in XIV (2.0)?

Any chance we can get the Final Fantasy XII's system for target lines, where it shows who you are targeting, who's targeting you, and who your party is targeting etc?

This of course could be optional, and players could turn it off/on if needed. But with the new 2.0 system coming out, I think that would be something that is both helpful to the player and the party.

Party leader engages, and the party would see the target line to the mob in question, thus hopefully removing some of the confusion if that mob is in a group of mobs.

Also, it wouldn't have to be this exact system, as I'm sure others might have better ideas then this, but I just wanted to put it out there for review. :)

Thanks for listening. :)

i think this is a great idea. it always seemed to me that the lines in FF12 were more suited to a MMO. i think its a great idea but sadly i can't see it happening :(

Yeah, I'd love to see this. :D

Hopefully there will be something similar to that. Parties I've been in tend to attack the wrong target and e'eryone gets killed because no one knew who to start off with and e'eryone is rushing.

have you partied with me? i'm always attacking the wrong mob

Thats a great idea, it would definately help with showing which target the tank is attacking etc so people don't pull uneeded hate from other mobs.

It would also help the tank to see which mobs are targeting the healers etc.

Great idea, hope a community rep can suggest this to the dev team :D

I wanted to see this back in FFXI! Any MMO would benefit from this type of feature. Here's hopes to allowing it!

Agreed, this would be a great feature. Hope it gets to the attention of devs

This was one of the best parts about FFXII, I would love to see it in FINAL FANTASY XIV.

C'mon SE, put it in! Make it happen! I completely agree with this XII Feature, it was really helpful, even more on an MMO!

Targeting lines could be very useful. However, having multiple customization options would be necessary to prevent them from being overwhelming. IIRC max pt size is still 15. Having 15 individual lines moving all over the place would be immensely distracting.

Options that have them off/on when you target other players/monsters, off/on when other players target other players/monsters, off/on when they only target you, off/on entirely, etc. would all be necessary to adjust to each player's specific needs. Additionally, players should have the option of allowing which specific player's lines they wish to see. Maybe i don't need to see what my party's conjurer is targeting, but maybe i do want to see what my party's tank is locking onto.

All that said, the game should seek to maximize their usefulness if they're implemented. One of the issues this game currently has is that it's difficult to determine the proper casting distance between yourself and your target. It's easy to feel like you're close enough to cast cure on a party member when you're really off by a few steps. IMO this is huge hassle and even makes it a problem for people wishing to stay out of aoe monster range while still wanting to target pt members.

Targeting lines could easily absolve that issue by either having a different thickness (for example, a faded line connecting to your target when too far away but bright and bold when within casting distance) or by using arrows that merge into a single line the closer you get. For example, if someone was 10 steps away from casting distance, the targeting line might look like -> -> -> -> but as the player moves closer it solidifies into --->-> and at proper casting distance the line would just be solid and bold.

Finally, since it's in the same discussion as FFXII targeting, i think that aoe spheres should be added to the game. Having an aoe sphere of what will be affected by your spells would help players a great deal by letting them know exactly where they need to cast for maximum effect.

I think adding lines and spheres would serve the players well by adding to ease of use and by allowing players to make more accurate decisions while playing. Adding features like these would continue to help smooth out gameplay and make battles more about fighting the monster, and less about fighting the interface.

that would be great actually. And it'd be optional~

+1 to OP wanted this in FFXI after playing FFXII and still think it's good idea.

Just need to make sure there is option to turn on/off for those that hates all these extra UI

/assist would work just the same.

Yea assist would work but its not as user friendly and there is no visual to see whats happening on screen.

Since they're totally redoing the UI, a Target of Target frame could be doable. Make your main tank's target your ToT window and viola. I like your idea, I just think the lines might be a little distracting. That and someone's bound to bring up the "I" word. Hint: it ends in mmersion.

You bring up some excellent points, I didn't quote them here, because I didn't want to make this too long. Anyway, yes, I loved your ideas that you added to this discussion. As for the max party size it's now 8, but that can still be too busy.

As a mage I liked the spheres idea, or AOE really, it helps when casting. And I liked the idea of the line being thin if the target is out of rage for the attack.

As with all posts, yes, this would have to be optional, and the settings listed in kisada's post were spot on. Hopefully the dev team at SE can see this and ether respond or surprise me... That's always welcome. :)

thanks. and yeah you're right, even 8 lines would still be pretty hectic.

i'd rather 8 lines, than 8 stupid ass wyverns blocking my view

I love this idea! Put it in SE nao!

This would indeed be interesting, and allow us a more visual view of who is holding hate and how the battle is flowing without us staring at menus the whole time.

While you're at it, give us a cone/circle for the AoE effect of abilities as we select them.

I am all for improved targeting, but please be realistic with these lines.

They would be going all over the place.

Unit Frames in other games (not just WoW) have special frames called "Player's Target," "Enemy Target," "Target of Target."

Theses show up in small resizeable boxes that show who your party members are attacking, what that mob has targeted, or in general the "target of your mob."

Furthermore, highlighting a name in the unit frames to a special color (maybe red) is a better way to indicate this person has aggro rather than having this awful target line going everywhere.

Not only would these target lines create unnecessary lag, but they would be pretty distracting for something that could be implemented far easier via unit frames.

If these lines do get implemented, please allow turning them off.

A big no to this target-line idea. It works for single player games, not MMOs.

Reinheart's translated LIVE letter #2 indicates they're going to have target of target frames in the new UI, so I guess this has already been addressed. :)

I've always wanted cone/circle displays for AoE's.

Like this, but only for your character (not everyone in the party... would be overkill):

BTW according to the translated pics shown on Thursday from the Live letter 2, you can see what player the enemy is targeting.

It's definately a step in the right direction and with any luck players will be able to make addon that function in this way if SE allow us to use overlay graphics as part of addons.

I would only want to see lines from me to what im targeting and lines from the enemy to what its targeting.

Agree that AoE range display would also be a nice feature which could be turned on and off and think there was a previous thread about that.

Edit:- Yoshi mentioned that it could be possible with addons to make different characters flash different colours depending on whos being targeted or who has the most hate etc, which is kind of similar to what is being asked for here.

I don't see how adding a graphical line would add performance lag or server lag. The data's already there anyway, and it's a simple line. If you recall back to XII, the lines would only appear when a change occurred to the unit's target, and then quickly melt away. It didn't ruin immersion or anything. And if the PS2 can do it, XIV can do it. Visually, I like it better than what WoW had to offer.
