As it currently stands, the Lore Shield is the best shield in the game. The Lore Sword is not. Because of how the Lore Sword and Shield are both required to trade in, a PLD is forced to spend 700 Lore they could spend on other pieces for a sword they may never actually use.

No, I think he's referring to trading them in for an upgrade. Since you can't upgrade the shield without the sword, you're forced to spend additional lore tomes for it.

PLD seems to be always screw on gear. Drops from boss even, why not just drop the sword and shield together.

Are you saying that PLD should be able to get (part) of their i240 weapon for just 300 tomes when everyone else has no choice but to spend 1,000 for theirs? Tbh, the fact that they can buy the shield separately at all seems to be a massive advantage, as you can get it pretty much immediately.

everyone has to pay 1000 lore for their weapon, Having it split into sword and shield is no different
would you rather they make it so swords and shields are a single "sword and shield" item and lose the bit of extra customization that only paladins have? -

One thing I've been continuously irked about regarding the sword and shield is that they always have different stats between the two. Sure, this adds a bit of customization option, but for the most part we're always still gonna go for those higher item levels regardless of the secondary stats. The issue comes in when you compare the sword/shield combo to the other two tanks' weapons. Most notable is previously when Parry wasn't regarded as poorly as it is now, and the Curtana was Parry + Accuracy, and the Holy Shield was Parry + Skill Speed, during the time when Skill Speed was arguably the least desirable stat for any TP using job. (Why not just put Accuracy on the shield instead of Speed?) If they took the Sword's stats and spread them to the Shield, we'd end up with the same stat spread per point as the other tanks (at that time, just warrior). That trend still continues today where WAR/DRK are being hooked up with tons of Crit and Det, and even Skill Speed occasionally (don't get me wrong, they get Parry now and then, too) while when PLD does get lucky to get Crit on the Sword (which would give us the largest value because of higher stat caps on the sword) we always end up losing out because inevitably the shield will have Parry. Or, if the sword has Parry, we end up where we're enticed to forego our main stats just to pick up more desirable secondary stats.
TL;DR, why don't the sword and shield just have the same stats, spread across the two items for a given item level the same as WAR/DRK for their one item? -
