I'm going to pick a company today and I just wanted to make sure before I make the plunge that we cant switch or earn seals towards another. (the whole different company different items thing is my problem here :) )

You can be a recruit in all three companies, but when you eventually graduate to Private you will have to swear allegiance to only one. There will be enough prompts when the time comes so it won't take you unawares.
At current you can only join one and all of your seals in the others are locked (not deleted, locked) and you can only get seals for the company you have joined. They have said they are looking into letting us change companies at a later date but there has been no word on when.
As to items, they have said they will be equalizing them I the future. Also most of the company gear is pretty lackluster compared to crafted/materia gear ( company gear can not have materia added) so I wouldn't worry to much about it.
Choose the company you like the look/story of, the rest is immaterial.
i heard when the company issue (which to join) first came up, that u should not base ur pick on the gear u can get. as in the future all 3 will have gear for all classes
Thanks for everybodys input.
adders front line of defense = cannon fodda. followed by the flames = grunts, great in battle but little to no intelligence. join us the Maelstrom when our ally's are all dead but have weeken the enemy. the thinking man's company will finish them off. and take all the glory and be hailed as heros
ps sorry adder and flames didn't meant to offend :P
Except the Garleans can fly so.....
They could honestly move down from Sharlayan too, apparently they've fallen. They could even move in through Mor Dhona, we know they've got a presence there too. Honestly with their vastly superior airships they could really just strike from anywhere.
Men of the Sea Unite!
Don't be a shroud hugger or an Immortal Lamer! Join the Maelstrom- the one true Grand Company
Back on topic- yess, you are locked into a GC like a street gang once you reach a certain point and prove your worth, as well as your loyalty. So make sure to sleep on the decision! and don't live in regret. (Regret in this case would equal joining Immortal Flames or Twin Adder)
Or, rather than waiting for the other two nations to be finished off, you can join with them and meet the garleans head on, with an immense display of firepower so great they run back home with their tails between their legs.
If you're going to go with the thinking man's game, recognize that morale is a powerful weapon. If they've already conquered two city states, their spirits will be high... and most of the pirates in Limsa Lominsa will be having doubts about being able to stand up where the others have all fallen. They may not be as spirited as usual... some may even defect. But if you annihilate the enemy in their first encounter, you instill fear in their hearts, and bravado in your men. Your soldiers will have the strength of will to fight against insurmountable odds, and the Garleans will be hesitant to fight us again.
Maelstrom is the most tactically minded and most likely to win us the war.
Adders are the most ethically minded and most likely to not cause collateral damage while fighting.
Flames are the most economically minded and most likely to sell us all out to the empire as soon as it becomes profitable.
Take your pick!
I wanted to join Maelstrom but then I realized that i had near 5k unused seals in Flames and I wanted my chocobo fast D:
