With Nidhogg getting ready for the Final Chorus, are we going to see a redux of the Defense of Ishgard, like Steps of Faith (Hard)? Or something like XI's Besieged?
I just wonder how long this will drag out before the transition to 4.0 starts.

I am pretty sure the Final Chorus arc will have less to do with the War itself and more to do with
1) Politics in Ishgard (people feel reunited with the purpose of killing Nidhogg)
2) Saving Estinien, which will be complicated due to the above
I'd love for there to be a 8 man Nidhogg Trial, especially with him having both eyes and possessing Estinien's body. Maybe the 1st phase we can fight Estinien and then the 2nd (transformation phase) it'll be Nidhogg.
Otherwise, I can see a solo Instance with ___ objectives that we've been getting since 3.0
I wasn't quite paying attention, but apparently we got a buff in the fight against Raubahn with the descrition "Fighting like only a Warrior of Light can." I think it actually buffed us too, in part since we were tethered at the time.
Maybe if they doa solo instance we'll have the same/similar buff? It could let SE do more a more dramatical 1v1 fight.
Course I'd also love for such a fight to happen AFTER either The Aery (Hard) or an 8-man Nidhogg fight.
I'm sure there will both be a solo duty where you fight invading dragons in Ishgard and a 8-man Trial against Nidhogg/Estinien.
I'm hoping they make it a dungeon/24 man raid, something similar to the Siege of Orgrimmar so they don't have to allocate much resources into designing the environments... wishful thinking though, there'd also be a severe lack of circular platforms to fight on so it won't happen.
I doubt fighting Nidhogg will be a solo trial since it would have to be ridiculously tuned down to allow a clear for one player regardless of class. That would make the fight seem less awesome.
From rumors SE plan to end the Dragonsong war in 3.3
If they follow the same way for building into 3.0 release then we may see patch 3.4, 3.5, and 3.55 focus on building towards 4.0 (most likely Ala Mhigo) considering we have been slapped in the face with Ala Mhigo since 2.0.
They made it clear the next patch will pretty much wrap things up in Ishgard/Dravania. Probably heading to Ala Mhigo in 4.0, if some story cutscenes don't make that clear enough. Although I smile at the idea of the Goblins one upping Dalamund's fall by strapping a bunch of boosters to the planet and giving a certain someone what he wants; Planetary Annihilation style, going into 4.0.
Would anyone want an "extreme" Nidhogg trial in addition to normal, similar to primals?
Depends. There's value to be found in fighting Nidhogg alongside story characters that cared about Estinien in some way (Alphinaud, whatshisname from the 2.0 DRG questline, not to mention Aymeric and Lucia). And I'd like them to do some actual fighting instead of sitting on the sidelines like a cheerleader *LuciainStepsofFaithcough*.
Hopefully there will be a primal worthy ex version of our favorite dragon. For a game that focuses on how epic dragons are, especially a whole expansion involving them... We're really lacking in epic dragon fights. Had a few bosses sure and the primal of dragons... But to have an honest, pure, not screwed with by the allagan dragon fight would be great.
Honestly I expect the final Nidhogg fight to use the giant chekhov's gun that is docked in the sea of clouds at camp cloudtop. That big airship has been screaming at us since Cid was first introduced in the HW story.
Steps of Faith was a great send off for ARR and a suitably epic way to introduce us to Heavensward. I really enjoyed it, but I would like to see the last hurrah of Heavensward be something even grander. Some MMOs I've played in the past have done server wide events to usher in an expansion (I hear FFXIV 1.0 might have even done something similar before its servers shut down) and that's what I'd like to see in FFXIV, whether to end the Dragonsong war or to introduce us to our next conflict.
Something like the season events (like Little Ladies day, where each individual quest adds to the server's total progression) combined with Besieged. Maybe we're preparing for an attack so a series of quests open up about recruiting allies, building defenses, stocking supplies, fighting off enemy scouting parties, and each quest finished adds to the server's total preparedness. Only once the server has reached a certain point can each individual player continue with the main story and participate in the final battle.
During our first fight against Nidhogg in the Aery he was missing an eye and being weakened by Estinien. He even had a special debuff throughout the entire fight pointing out that he only possessed a fraction of his true power. That was a four-man dungeon. Given that Nidhogg is now back at full strength I'm fairly certain the rematch will need to be an eight-man trial as anything less would ruin that sense of relative scale in the dragon's power levels. In theory even eight players shouldn't be enough; we're going to need a special weapon or device to even the odds I think.
