With the overhaul to tank damage calculations, those points you assign at level up now only effectively serve to make it inconvenient to use both SCH and SMN. Why is this mechanic still here, exactly?

It's only 30 points, you can easily respec those points very cheaply now as often as you want or just spit 15/15 if you play both actively. -

Because SE allows obsolete gameplay systems to linger around so that they appear to have purpose. Bonus stats and cross-class abilities are relics from 1.0 that no longer function as a way of customization. However, SE still leaves them there in order to have some appearance that choice matters. It doesn't - there's no real choice in which bonus stat to allocate, and there's no real choice in cross class abilities since it is so severely limited.

No need to choose which stat to boost - points would always be applied to the "best" stat, so no risk of doing it wrong.
Scholar and Summoner would no longer share a point allocation. -

There is no reason to have them anymore, the stats only give an illusion of choice. Nowadays it's primary stat or nothing, they may as well just fold the bonus in to the base stats of the job crystal and be done with it. The bonus stats can go and nothing of value would be lost. -

There are games where you allocate "ability points" but not stat points, which are baked into a combination of your gear, class and race. Stat allocation here doesn't really mean anything. Everyone just boosts the necessary primary stat and is done with it.Quote:

Some of us use it to cheat HP checks in progression by putting some points into VIT to meet the minimum threshold while still gearing up.

I used to think the only argument for keeping it was for (only) tanks messing with VIT and STR, but since that's no longer a thing and the devs flat out told tanks to allocate all into VIT for 3.2, they pretty much confirmed the pointlessness of giving a choice on the bonus point allocations and it has become more of a hassle than an actual "bonus."
The whole SMN or SCH thing is also just a petty inconvenience when the work-around is as simple as holding on to Keeper's Hymns and using them to re-allocate points when you need/want to play the other half. So, they can't even say "we didn't want players to be able to play both jobs optimally," when you very well can, but there's an irritating (but hardly difficult) process to go through.
My mind is blown that they've held onto this feature for as long as they have. If its not gone by the next expansion or the day it goes live I'll assume that they can't be bothered to do anything about it and would rather ignore it.
