Any downside to assigning a Job to a Retainer?

I have 2 level 60 THM retainers that I would like to switch to BLMs, to give them my better ilvl gear. If I switch them to BLM, will they stay at level 60, or do they go down to 50, or 30? The in game info from the Retainer Vocate didn't answer this.

As far as I can tell, there is no need to switch from THM to BLM in order to wear the gear -- all my own level 60 gear says "archer bard machinist" ...

That being said, the downside is the cost: 40 venture coins to assign a job.

You need to be level 50, the retainer has to be at least level 30. I haven't spent the coin yet, but I figure that they don't go back down to 30.

As far as the upside? I don't know if there is anything special about it EXCEPT for the ability for a retainer to become a Dark Knight, Machinist or Astrologian.

There is some gear (mostly relic gear, including the Estoric ones) that are job only.

Exactly, I want to give my retainers eso gear, its super cheap now and job specific.

Doesn't seem to be, and then they can wear Eso and Relic gear.

I just gave job to my level 60 conjurer, now she's happily level 60 white mage. It's just sort of like equipping (permanently) a job stone on them. (Showed in same portion if their equipment ui too)

Practical uses are, as has been mentioned, some job specific gear, and the new jobs, for people who have only leveled any of those to 60. Earlier they couldn't have 60 level battle retainer unless they leveled also some original class past 50.

Thanks Sida! That is what I needed to know.

I do not think there is any need as of right now to make them into jobs other than gear. I do hope they do something in the future that will give you perks to using a job instead of a class.

As a SCH main, it was a pain to have my battle retainer an arcanist.. I couldn't give it hand me down equipment. It doesn't matter now that I'm constantly doing things and can give tome gear to my retainer easily enough, so I made her a summoner for the pretty eso gear.

My question how ever. is there anything a retainer need IL200 with? i mean. for hunting and stuff, the amount of items it bring back does not improve not even slightly.
probably for the ventures with random item rewards that increase or something?

The job thing is especially useful if you are a MCH, AST, DRK or SCH main, and want to keep your retainer´s gear up to date.

Especially with SCH was a pain, as ARC is a DPS class, so the healer gear you could get didn't fitted on them.

For the rest of the jobs, the change barely noticeable.
