Mentor System - How is it on your server?

So I joined this new mentor thing on my server and I was not impressed at all. It was filled with nothing but the mentors talking among themselves arguing over the tank changes. There were 91 mentors and only 12 sprouts on which is a bit lopsided from a number standpoint.

I don't see how this is any benefit to new people when it just contains mentors arguing. It was such a piece of crap that I revoked my mentor status. By the way, if you do this, you cannot sign back up for 30 days (if I recall) it seems according to NPC.

Anyway, this was just my server. How has your experience been with it.

On Balmung, I can never connect to it.

Well, if you're a mentor. Do the only thing you can do. Find sprouts in need of sempais and ask if they wanna join.

I can't say anything about the sprout chat but on Chaos datacenter in dungeons/trials there is hardly ever advice given by mentors even when the party fails miserably. If I remember correctly one time I saw a mentor be first to leave or right after the first person left after a single early wipe. Really disheartening, it almost feels like the mentor roulette will become just a bonus for the mentors.

I may as well share this story here. Did the new content with two friends of mine and in the Antitower our fourth member had the Mentor crown thing. They died in every boss fight, stood in things, didn't kill adds, and overall had a horrific performance and was one of the worst mnk's I'd ever seen.

My theory was that she was just trying to teach us how NOT to play in a dungeon.

I had to constantly res the blm with the mentor crown in my sephirot run. :v never learned mechanics, repeatedly died to the same reasons, etc.. Only was thrown off once though.

how is all this coming to you all as a surprise is beyond my understanding.

BUT to be fair, you cant be a mentor to what you dont know yet, so mostly your expériences came from new content actually yesterday's content.

So yeah maybe not mixing all and everything might be a good way to go about.

This morning there were actual sprouts in the chat (in addition to six THM bots) and the mentors were arguing over whether SCH was a terrible healer or not. When I asked them not to poison the well they claimed they were having a meta discussion and can't mentors learn from other mentors too!!!!!

Imo saying things like "SCH is fsking terrible" is not a meta discussion, it's not helpful for new players at all.

Also, so far I've seen two new people ask for help tanking something, and no mentors stepped up. (Me included.)

Opened the mentor chat, read trashtalk spam from other mentors only, closed the mentor chat.

I knew from day one this was gunna be bad. Sadly it's mostly just on us westerners side of the game. The reason they even added this is cause a large portion of the Japanese player base asked for it as a way to he lo streamline what they were already doing. Frankly I think they should have just left it on the Asian servers and never gave it to NA. A vast majority of the people I have seen with the crown mostly just have it as some a way to show off and actually have no intention of helping others. Personally I have been doing what the mentor system was intended for for a long time and I don't need some tainted program to help me. I hope maybe one day we can get outr shit together and fix this issue but who knows.0

I've actually had very little problems on the mentor chat on my server, but then most of the people in the mentor chat were people I already knew and the majority of them are good people. The real issue we had is somehow RMT bots were being invited (easy to spot, random character names in Central Than as level 7 THMs) and needed to be kicked but it was all mostly smooth, though we couldn't really identify the people who were inviting the bots so we could remove them from the channel as well.

Last night it was fine; even helped a newbie with a dungeon (and convinced them to get their job crystal).
Overall it's been pretty good, there were a few squabbles between the mentors but honestly it'll happen regardless of what rules are put in place. It didn't get so out of hand that we were unable to actually help people though.

After reading a whole bunch about how the Mentor system was getting abused on other servers, I'm glad to see at least Coeurl's weekday night shift isn't that bad. I ran through the entire novice hall and had some good conversations about what they did and did not cover regarding the game with other mentors and even a sprout chimed in.

I think the requirements for mentor should have been alot higher. There are too many people in this channel. 80% are AFK, inactive, or leave their game on all day while not playing. 100 mentors for the 10 or so sprouts at any given time.

The chatting isn't severe for the times that I play, but I imagine its worse during uptime hours on cactuar.

I foresee a Revamp of the mentor system or the channel itself.

did antitower for the first time with 3 mentors. The only one who spoke kept cursing at me because I didn't know the fights already.

It's pretty nice on Leviathan. It's very hard to get into the Novice Network though and like 20% of the other mentors are AFK... :/

I hope they add a voluntary / temporary leave function so they can allow others in. Or log out before they go AFK...

I think their should be an inactivity kick. You can't help if your not even present in the first place. The amount of people in the channel at any given time should also be lowered.

Requirements definitely should have been higher.

Making the requirements higher won't change anything. You'll still have a ton of people cluttering the channel.

It actually could be possible to report Mentors for not really being Mentors. It only makes sense anyway.

Making requirements higher lowers the amount of people available to clutter the channel... Its not necessarily about channel clutter though, its about the amount of people who are in the channel who are not even currently playing.

I think it was an odd decision to make it so that Mentors cannot leave without being kicked or logging off. I know a few people are in the channel but just hide the text.... so what's the point of being in there?

It took me a while before I could actually get into the novice channel (Gilgamesh server) but once there, it was quite cordial. Well, to be specific, it was dead quiet most of the time - but when a novice DID ask a question, the channel pretty much exploded with responses, pretty much all helpful and none negative or snarky.

The ratio was 100 mentors to 17 novices.

I don't know how it is because even when I signed up (shortly after server went up yesterday), the channel was maxed with 512 people. So on Balmung, the number is too low-add a zero and you got maybe sufficient space for mentors and newbies

Maybe make it so you have to actively turn Mentor status on when you log in--I noticed when I signed back on after maintenance I was still in Mentor status.

I am going to guess someone went wild and invited every green leaf they saw. We only have like 20-30 on at a time on Leviathan on weekdays, it seems. Depends highly on the servers but most don't have that many sprouty New Adventurers on at once. I guess it's more of a thing on Balmung than anywhere.. and Mateus apparently.

It's more that there's a 100 limit on Mentors, regardless of the number of greenleaves on. The 100 limit is filling up fast, with less than 100 newbies in the channel at most times.

On Balmung, I can't even see how there would be 412 newbies online with the almost constant character creation restrictions.

They may have gotten in beforehand or when restrictions were not up. It's possible people ended up inviting bots too. Balmung as far as I know is one of the bigger servers. TBH I don't have an issue with the 100 limit, but I think if they're gonna be in there, they should at least be ready to contribute and not AFK :/.

It's kinda funny how there are so many posts about how this system is faulty. Yet those of us who were outspoken about this system were labeled gloom doomers. But look here, new players not being helped, mentors being unproven to teach, mentors complaining about 60 content that's not revelant for new players. Can't say how it's faired on Jenova since no one talks about it and have seen maybe 10 people with the crown. But if it's anything like you all say it is on other servers, Jenova is probably worst off.

On Leviathan, people are getting helped as soon as they ask. However, there are a few trolls here and there trolling the network either as mentors or as random non-novice sprouts. I think they're eventually removed or they leave of their own accord.

I got in it on Balmung and all of the sprouts were RP alts.

Some of them were actually trying to give the mentors advice instead. Lol
