Tiny Free Company rant

So My guild leader just recently got a face full of agro text from another player regarding our FR tag. (I will not say names here to avoid harassment)

So this player was upset because we happened to have the same name on our tag that his guild had.

This player got very aggressive with my guild leader and even went as far as accusing him of botting... (Just throwing it out there, we play on PS4. Not sure if there is a way to bot on PS4 XD) This player kept saying things like "Oh you are so original using our name tag!" "We came first!" and yada yada.

I would usually dismiss this as a troll, but when we checked the FC he was from, there was "We are the first to use "NAME" All over, so makes me consider that this player might have actually been serious.

Ok, I can completely understand if you have a name first and want to be unique or easy to find by other players, but in that scenario where you come across another guild with the same tag, what is stopping you from simply requesting said guild to change their name tag?

Just saying, if a game allows for names to be used more than once, I would expect that to happen. No need to take it personally.....

This all being said, this IS the internet and as such it comes with a certain level of stupid, but still, this just rubbed me the wrong way. XD

I will admit it does seem like an oversight to allow the same tag, I know in my FC back on Goblin I'd usually wave at people who I assumed were in my FC only to realize the only difference was they had it all caps.

Well once I too chose a fc tag that another fc was useing before so I changed my tag that I have yet to see. The main issue with the company tag thing is 5 charactors max so if on a huge server with many people... well I'm sure there will be many people with same or really simmilar tags...

Still its not something to cry over and all lol just accept it and carry on, but like you say some people are super immature like that and make simply enjoying things not so enjoyable...

fact is there are many many players and fcs on all worlds and with limit sometimes silly stuff like same tag will happen its unadvoidable but still accept and move on dont troll or just change your tag afterall its super easy to do.

Agreed completely. I think my guild leader is just gonna change our tag to avoid this happening again. Such a silly thing to get your panties bunched up over. XD

You're not in the wrong because of the system allowing FC's to use the same tags so don't worry. The reason some people can get angry about it is that tags offer an easy way for FC's to recruit without spelling out the entire FC name (which can be long in some cases).

For example, it's a lot quicker to type "BSD is recruiting!" in an advertisement than it is to "Blue Screen of Death is recruiting." Because of this, the tag becomes just as an important association to a FC as the name itself. If two different FC's were going around saying "join BSD" it can become extremely confusing for players.

So while you technically didn't do anything wrong, it's become more of an unspoken rule of "courtesy" amongst the playerbase. That said, the other player shouldn't have flipped out without talking it over calmly first and asking your leader to change the tag nicely, so that person isn't without fault there. Now if he/she continues to harass you guys over it, feel free to report that person. You really don't have to change your FC tag though just because someone tells you to. It is more of a courteous gesture though. One thing I've seen FCs do is to capitalize different letters in cases where the same tag was being used for two or more FCs (for example, one would be <BSD> and the other would be <bsd>).

I can understand a certain level of confusion with finding another FC with the same tag as you, but the other FC leader handled it very poorly. I'd be inclined to say your FC leader should've reported him for harassment. Odds are you guys had never even heard of this other FC before the leader decided to lay into your leader for something stupid. Seriously, the fact that the system allows FC's to duplicate tags isn't your guys' fault. Nobody has any form of claim to the tag they pick.

yeah, I am pretty sure our guild leader is gonna change the tag tonight. We don't want to make recruiting difficult by any means. I don't agree with what that player did, but that doesn't mean his guild is to blame and so it would only be right to change our name knowing the situation now. :)

i remember 1 of the earlier fcs i was in brought a house some1 else had thier eye on... everyday without fail he would sit outside abusing any1 in the fc he saw went on for months some ppl just are aholes not much any1 can do about it lol

my fc btw is solo just my two chars in it and name and tag flow super well Guardian Force <Gaia>

I dont even understand why tags exist, just give a option to show or hide the full fc name.

yeah i would prefer to just have my full fc name maybe in smaller print under my chars name

My tiny FC of 3 (has now grown immensely) ended up with the same tag as a much larger FC. We ended up creating a linkshell to recruit more SOUL tagged people as a way of stealing peoples souls. We all loved it.

Honestly, if its a pretty common tag, you have to expect to have others with the same tags.

IMO, best thing to do would just change the letters from lowercase to uppercase or the reverse. There is no rule against having the same tag, so that keeps the one you chose but still makes it unique. And the guy should be reported for harassment anyway.

Well <Fate> is also very over use. There's really no way to make it unique unless you make some random or abbreviation from your FC.

to clarify, the only reason we will make changes to our guild tag is to avoid making it hard on the guild to recruit members. One player does not make a guild and there for we should not treat the entirety of that guild as that player. What he did, was indeed stupid. Did it ultimately work in his favor? I suppose so, but unfortunately things don't always work out in life the way they should. This all being said, my leader hasn't changed the tag yet. :P

When me and our flatmate got tired of getting FC invites from random people, we took all our alts (we both enjoy altoholism very much) and made our own FC for them. This was a few weeks after ARR launch. Then we found friends in the game and took one pair of characters and joined their FC and those characters became our mains. Still have our private FC of course. Aaanyway, the point was that one day, we ran across another FC with the same tag as us. And while our tag (Shard) was part of the longer FC name, their FC name didn't seem to have anything to do with the tag O.o
I'm pretty sure our FC was made first, but on the other hand, it's not like that's an extremely active FC, so we didn't even poke the people we saw with the tag, just noted it as an amusing coincidence.

To the OP, I'm sorry you ran into people who were really stingy about the use of a single word. It's not like you plagiarized them on purpose after all, right? If I were you guys, I'd contact the leader of the other FC and ask why this person was so aggressive about it. There's absolutely no reason for you to change, though I understand the whole "What's the big deal anyway? If we change it, we'll have less issues" sentiment. The best part would be if you could come to some agreement with the other FC so you could coexist. And frankly, that player's behaviour is definitely reportable as harassment.

This is pretty much the reasoning behind my guild leader considering it. He hasn't done anything yet though. Either way, I hope the guild in question understands that we didn't mean to jack their tag. XD

if you started a solo fc then you have no rights to recruit old and or even new people. so inorder for my old fc to be reputable the theif had to leave server and that would be me from tonberry so learn from my mistakes and dont steal people even if friends from ex fcs you were in or even new people with leafs unless your one of the origional reputable fcs on server.

But.... the guy you accused of being a thief in this thread (aka: "ao the post under my slast one inother words is a theif!!!!") said that he created an LS for others with the "SOUL" tag... not that he "stole" them for his "solo" FC. It was a joke about "stealing souls" ... you know, like a demon does ... because SOUL is a common tag for multiple FC's.

I love when people use typos against people and yet they understand the full concept of what I intended. Why some people think they are awesome for correcting people I have no clue... toxic English population defiantly!

But again if someone has your tag and you followed then how about change yours? In the end it doesn’t matter who started with it, just grow up and change yours why copy?

I would not make an LS as a joke just cause my tag matched another’s I have never spoken to and all that.

That person and the people in the other SOUL tagged FC all thought it was cool so they created a LS together for all people tagged SOUL. Like. They enjoyed it. They thought it was fun. I don't get what's so difficult to understand about this. ._.

To try and sum up what I mean in a few sentences.

to start a fc you need 4 people yet several like i just get people make alts so fc can be formed, but in order to try and recruit if you start out solo is to somewhat steal even in the case of grab a friend from another fc and he/she decides to take more people from that fc to join your new one. The person at fault is the fcs leader entirely, that is unless you watch all recruits that have no fc and or are from a fc and btw this is what I was simply taught so unless you start a new fc with 10 people watch who you recruit or get slandered as a ninja fc server wide.


unless you on a good server with nicer people be careful if you lead is what I learned the hard way so best idea is to stay solo to advoid hate.

You mean if i left my FC, whatever reason, it's not allowed for me to form a new FC with people who want to join me? oO
I don't understand how a player can steal players from other FCs? is there a way i can force chars to join my FC?

I thought it is a player decision which FC a char belongs to?

back to topic: Noone has a right for a special FC tag like copyright. If they are the same and one FC is disagreeing with this it is a matter for both FC leaders to clear this.
report the harassing player for harassment and talk to his FC leader for his unkind behavior. A player which harassed others in this way is a shame for a FC and damages the reputation.

That has nothing to do with the person who posted after your "last post" that you mentioned. They said they used to be a 3-player FC (and no, not all those people create alts to make that FC, some people ask friends or strangers to help them start up their FC and then leave it, sometimes offering a small gil reward as thanks for their help) but that they've since grown -- probably because they've made friends in-game who wanted to join them and meshed well enough. And they said that they found other FCs with the same FC tag, and created a Linkshell and that it was the linkshell they tried to steal other [SOUL] tagged people to. Not that they tried to recruit those people to join their FC. If they'd been that indiscriminate with who they wanted in their FC, they probably wouldn't have started out as a 3-people FC. =)

People are not forced to remain in their first FC for all eternity. Sometimes what seemed like a good FC at the start doesn't offer the type of community you wanted -- if you realize you're mostly interested in crafting, and your FC is mostly a raiding-focused FC, you're not going to have much in common with those other FC members, and vice versa. Sometimes there are arguments and fallouts in an FC. And sometimes people stop playing and you're left in a mostly empty FC where the people you used to talk to are never online anymore. Or a multitude of other reasons. It's perfectly alright for someone to decide that they want to leave an FC and join another. It is not the 'fault' of the FC leader of their new FC. And since people aren't property, it is not theft. Potentially kidnapping, but that requires the kidnapping victim to be forced to go there, which very rarely is the case with FC invites ^^;

If someone is worried about others using the same tag, using a 5 letter tag would be a good idea. The number of combinations for 3 letters is 17576, assuming 26 letters and that letters can be reused. The number of combinations for 4 letters is 456976 and for 5 letters 11881376. For reference, a lodestone search comes up with more than 130000 free companies. So someone with a tag of 3 of less letters can only blame themselves for not being unique. Even with 4 letters you have to think outside the most common words and abbreviations to not get copied.

I remember getting mad at someone in IRC chat a long time ago cause they picked the same name I wanted...so after using it for a while I was unable to use it one day :P But yea, I was a child...literally and didn't quite get it at first. They was quite kind about it and explained it to me and I picked another name indefinitely so I wouldn't keep them from logging in as that so I could find them again... lol I made a friend that day...

It's kind of sad that MMOs aren't quite like that. Maybe IRC is just so vanilla it's harder to glean any kind of bias on a person you don't know. MMOs you can be like "OMG, you silly miqote... all you darn cat people are like this! Shall I tie you up with a ball of string...oh wait I can't... you might like that you lame cat... #Dogperson4life" :P Online games are weird...

My FC was founded by a handful of family and friends way back in the dark ages it feels like. Named after our LS of FFXI days, we tried to think of a suitable tag that none of us had encountered before. Since then however, two other FC have formed with our tag. It seems to have mildly annoyed some of our non FC friends, but it doesn't really bother me. Then again, I keep most names turned off so anyone not on my friend list just looks like a wandering npc to me.

I certainly don't plan on changing my FC tag of two years for a wandering npc. And I don't expect them to change for us. Imagine how many FC tags would be in inactive-fc limbo or part of a ridiculously priced for-sale message in PF if they made these things the sole claim of whoever got to it first. No bueno.

My advice to the OP would be not to change your FC tag if you like it. You'd only encourage the guy who took issue with it to throw a tantrum at the next FC to come along.
