DoL idea: Shepard

We all know how much you hate grinding out monsters over and over again just for the chance to get a random drop right?

What if there was a class that treated monsters as gathering nodes? Where you could gather materials X amount of time for a sufficient amount of a certain material you need with all the skills to go with it (kings yield, ect.) without having to rely overtly on RNG. You could also have skills to pacify aggressive monsters before you begin gathering from them. Would make it a ton easier for jobs with more expensive items like LTW/WVR to get mats, and could be pretty fun it it's own right if expanded upon. Just my thoughts.

What do you guys think?

I like this idea, and I've wanted a class like this for a while. It would make leatherworking much more bearable! :D

Yeah, we already have retainers that can do this. Killing monsters yourself does take a while, but if you level up a retainer - they can do it more effectively. Sometimes, they even bring back all of the materials HQ. There's not much an additional DoL class can add at the moment. The three we have pretty much cover everything.

Is it even possible to get HQ skins by killing a mob. I don't do much mob farming but I really like the Shepard idea.

Since retainers reset on changing class, this would be useful. Or they should just remove the reset and put a cooldown on changing your retainer class, how is it that they forget everything :mad:

Yes. There is a chance for the drop to be HQ when you kill a mob.

Retainers can gather hides, and yes, we can also get hides from killing things, however I do not believe that to be sufficient enough to prevent players from having a Shepard for the purpose of gathering off of monsters. Retainers gather materials that botanist, miner, and fisher can gather, however we are still given the aforementioned classes so that we can gather materials on our own. You can also get Iron Ore from killing Coblyn type enemies, but that is also something that is obtainable via gathering.

But anyways, the main concern with this "shepherd" class is what purpose would it serve and what niche does it fill?

An alternative resource to gathering materials gained through monsters, mainly. As others in the thread stated you can get said items through retainers and normally farming enemies which can already be said of all the other DoL classes. This would give players a little more of a proactive choice when it comes to gathering materials aside from relying on RNG or waiting for a specified amount of time :cool:

A sound idea, but it seems quite redundant and if it's really easier to gather those materials, then it would make other related classes pointless.

It's not necessarily "easier"; right now you have two options if you want hides: farm monster kills, which works but is heavily reliant on RNG, and retainers, which you can only set them after one material with limited results each hour, and it costs 1 venture. Having a gathering class with a focus on gathering from monsters would make life easier in that regard.

The RNG for mob drops is pretty fair and you could get a lot more materials from mob farming for an hour than waiting for a retainer to only get you a handful.

I wouldn't argue with you there; of the two existing ways to gather materials, one is clearly more efficient. However, gathering isn't the only way to obtain some of materials that the other three gathering classes offer, and retainers can also go gather materials that the other gathering classes offer. I would just like a class that allows me to gather hides and et cetera off of animals without having to go on a mass murdering spree off of mobs that only respawn so quickly.

+1 we need more gathering classes shepard or archaeologist would be welcome in ff14 :3

There are some items that only drop one at a time. Like a few weeks ago I had a meltdown that I could only gather one Hippogryph Sinew at a time through killing, yet my retainer can get 7 in an hour. I could get more of them through an hour, but those monsters rarely drop them for me. Shepard wasn't actually a class that was mentioned in the game in 1.0. In one of the areas of Coerthas, there was a building that had the Shepard emblem on it with a flag. It was never implemented.

A DoL class that have increased drop chance if killing an animal enemy. The devs can call it Hunter.
And, of course, decreasing the dropchances on all battle classes

I have been talking about this type of new DoL since the beginning of the game. However, I have been calling Native or Wanderer.

It would be a DoL or even a Melee DPS gatherer which is trained by the Beast Tribes and various NPC races (Goblins, Poachers, etc.) that are out on the map.

This would be a really awesome class/job that could be truly setup for skill trees over what we currently have.

Technically the Shepherd class isn't even new but was a partially planned one for version 1.0, only to be never completed and was thus dummied out - it actually had a locked Guildhall in Falcon's Nest, which naturally no longer exists by the time of ARR/HW, and it even had a class icon (which matched the logo on the sign above the aforementioned Guildhall), as shown:

I have no idea where this logo came from, I found it on a FFXIV site that has since disappeared so anyone's guess is as good as mine.

As for how it works, I could speculate, but everyone else has come up with interesting ideas so I'll just leave it that hopefully SE will look into this, even despite all traces of it's 1.0 roots being abandoned.
