Hello,
From what I know and have heard the "unofficial" RP server is Balmung. However I was wondering if there are any other servers anyone might know of that also have an RP community big or small.
I'm taking a break from the game right now, but when I return I'd like to get back into RP. I used to RP on WoW, but I enjoy Final Fantasy XIV more and the Final Fantasy series as a whole.

Gilgamesh I've heard also has a fairly active RP community, but from what I understand it is nowhere near as large or devoted as Balmung. Balmung is definitely the place for RP as you don't even have to look for to join in role-playing, you'll easily find someone wanting to RP with you. :)

You can avoid most drama by avoiding giant fcs and the sewer that is the rpc cliques. Most here are nice, just avoid the drama queens and youll have fun.Quote:

Keep in mind though that making an alt on Balmung is deemed to be impossible by most people by now, unless you perfectly time it with servers going back online after a maintenance. -

A lot of rp fc's on Gilgamesh pulled a max exodus about six months to a year ago. Last I knew, most rp was done in the housing wards now.
As for why? Partly due to server wide drama and partly because when rper's designated Gilgamesh as the secondary rp server we didn't know one of the major forums decided to go there as well. Can't remember if it was Reddit, 4chan, or Blue Gartr but it ended up with rpers getting trolled any time they dared to be in public. So it was just easier for a lot of the rp fc's (my old one included) to make the jump to Balmung where we'd be in the majority.
If you do manage to make it on Balmung, explore several different fc's before deciding what one to stick with. And Erik tends to be right, smaller FC's tend to be better. For more than just drama reasons. It's easier to make a better story and make sure everyone's story fits in with lore.
Larger fc's are more likely to have that one person who has to be Louisouix's half miqo'te, half vampire, half voidsent, half elezen daughter running about solving everyone's problems (or causing more) with a wave of a finger. -

With that in mind it makes sense to go to Balmung since the bigger pool of role-players means that you'll always be able to find a new group of like-minded individuals to interact with. If you go to a small community then any drama will quite easily lead you to being excluded from what few role-players there are present - especially if they're a tight knit group.Quote:

RE: That opt-in only board that requires people to opt in and is hidden by default, you enter, you're on your own. It's stated in the board-specific rules. Having it means that the sizable group of users who couldn't handle moderated sections have a place to go. Someone can be a great RPer while simultaneously lacking the social ability to follow some simple rules. As the RPC might as well be a public park, the only people not allowed on it are the ones doing something illegal.

Another Edit (this time for additional content).
Balmung hasn't had an open server window since 3.0 dropped. character creation is basically limited to the 5 minutes after the server comes up from a crash or maintenance. People looking to get into Balmung are best off transferring in. -

I noticed that you are on Behemoth? Before transferring, may I suggest checking out a linkshell? There is a player on the RPC that has mentioned RP on Behemoth. See if you can contact Zachary Volfire? He's mentioned this linkshell, Behemoth Roleplayers which I found on the lodestone http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...5048183481811/
It has 100 or so members. Ask him if you can get into any contacts, FCs. See if you like the RP on Behemoth.
If not, as mentioned before Siren has that website. I believe it's one of the few Worlds left on NA worlds that do not have a constant lock on character creation. Balmung is essentially get lucky or pay (transfer); even after-maintenance windows are less than three minutes. Gilgamesh I have heard to be the same. Edit: Roleplayers are dramatic by definition but Balmung is no worse off for drama than any other server. You will always find someone upset because the 'grass is greener' aka they feel that so and so is getting better roleplay than another. Surround yourself in drama and you get it.
The reason why you might hear about drama being prolific is because of the sheer amount of people Balmung has. The larger the quantity, the more chances you will see someone complain. Humans, by nature, will not get along with everyone. You will have differing opinions on how something should be handled (combat RP or how to develop friendships). For example, some people see combat RP as give and take while others want to win! Say your journey into a tomb discovers that there is now an underground vault that contains something incredible in terms of knowledge. Some roleplayers want to -be in that vault already- and others will want to -journey through potential traps etc- to it. For the most part on Balmung, you can openly roleplay without grief. PVErs and raiders don't actually care about whether you roleplay or not. If you play the game with them they just expect you to carry your weight. We've had GMs observe RP events and they generally take harassment reports well. Given how large the community is, your mileage may very. -

I would definitely say give it a try. As others have mentioned in this thread, it is a place to network, read some written fiction about various characters, find like-minded people when it comes to what you are looking for in your RP, get a listing of RP LSs and FCs, and also look up listing of RP events.
Majority of the members there are from Balmung, but there are other a few LS listings for other servers too, along with others that were mentioned in this thread.

There is a RP server? I came from a RP server on Rift (faeblight) and I miss that kind of community. Not everyone RP'd there but many did, and often I'd walk into people acting out scenes and it was great (and of course the E-RP sessions were awkward to walk upon... ; ; )
Bonus was people who could stay in character for a whole dungeon and actually play well. That was always fun and I'd play along. :P -

In general, as I said before, your mileage may vary and you may like the RP you might find on Behemoth or the others. Again, Balmung has a large community. Some have grievances with others and it's not all on the RPC. I've seen people have issues over Tumblr and Reddit etc. Not everyone is happy when someone does not want to roleplay with another because their styles do not match or they do not want to RP with a certain character. Not everyone wants to be in an FC that is dedicated to only specific persons' plots. Not every LS will agree with how people set up their combat Rolls to game the event etc.
Just as in the real world, not everyone will want to hang out with the entire world. You have your friends and you want to go play with them. Sometimes you'll meet another friend and you add to your circle. Not all circles will intermingle. Sometimes friendships break up over the most ridiculous things and sometimes you just get left alone. -

Yes, some parts are bad, but in this case a spoiled apple doesn't ruin the whole basket. There are some parts I don't like, as well. But you can't very well call it a sewer when you're sitting there using it for its intended purpose. All RP servers have drama, tumblr isn't any better. I'm gonna echo Arrelaine's sentiments. I'd encourage anyone looking into FFXIV role-play to check out the RPC. It's not a flawless site. I won't say you'll find a ton of useful and civil discussion, that the moderators are unbiased, or that a chunk of its members aren't unsavory people. But it is still the best place we have presently to find and advertise events/FC's/LS's, make connections, and learn about lore or other information. Every site and every community has its problems and drama. (I will also say it's harder to find connections on tumblr, and the drama there is much, much worse, as it's 100% unmoderated, and it's where several people not civil enough to remain on the RPC have had to make their home.)

This isn't really the place to badmouth a site created for the benefit of the already fractured and scattered role-playing community. Any concerns would be much better posted on the site itself, I imagine, since then at least people can reply directly anddiscuss the matter in-depth. It's a bit unfair to brand the place as a 'sewer', too. It's like saying the entirety of Youtube is a cesspit when in reality there's a lot of interesting videos and individuals to be found there.
