Lali ho :o
reminds me of vivi from ff9 for some reason xD
I don't think so. mammets are automatons, i think the picture above are living creatures. That viking helmet leads me to believe they are dwarves from FF4. Or at least inspired by.
EDIT: i couldnt find original sprite images, the best i could find is the ff4 remake version of the dwarves. I guess it could go either way. id like to think they are dwarves tho since antitower is likely underground.

Maybe one of the NA community team can chime in lol...
Agreed, they look more like mammets than anything else, some type of automaton. Though with all the stuff going on with the moon, I do expect the Antitower to be something like the Tower of Bab-Il. I wonder if that means there will be a Giant as a raid/dungeon?

The ones in OP's image look like mammets to me.
Maaaaybe?

But yeah I thought Mammet first too. But this expansion is very heavy on the FFIV reference and imagery so, hey, it could be.
Check out the high resolution screen shot found at the gallery at this page. If you look at their knee joints (and their unnaturally shaped eyes) you can see these fellows are mechanical in nature. I think that's further evidence toward Mammets or at least a reimagining of Final Fantasy Dwarves.
Hmm i'm not entirely sure. They don't look like the mammets currently in the game to me though, especially the eyes and the much thicker arms. I guess we have to wait till the 23rd to find out what they are. The image on the left with the viking hat really hit my nostalgia though :) Even if I'm wrong.
If they're mammets referencing the dwarves of FFIV, that's alright. If they actually end up being dwarves, then I'd be disappointed. I'm used to seeing dwarves being short, yet muscular (or stocky?), fellows.

Despite Mammets being automata, we do have some decent evidence that they possess self awareness. Look at the Goldsmith's guild, and of course our beloved Magitek armor. It's not beyond the realm of possibilities that those are specially created, more advanced mammets with self awareness, or perhaps they might even be hosting entities of a non-corporeal form?

Per the description:
"In all of creation, what greater mystery could there be than the fate of this very star? To sound the deepest depths, to study the aetherial sea itself─for these purposes and more was the Antitower built. Abandoned by her Sharlayan caretakers following the exodus, it has since been overrun by the magical guardians they left behind. Yet were one blessed with Her gift to brave these dangers and descend to the furthest reaches─to hear, feel, and think at the heart of this world─what would they find?"

Perhaps they are implying that dwarves and mammet machines are more alike than we think, with the similar likenesses.
What I want this to ACTUALLY mean is... like the tower of babel in the same game, this is a path to the underworld, in a new expansion...
Luca from FFIV is a dwarf and doesn't look like that in the after years at all. I assume dwarves actually look human and them having a black face and yellow, glowing eyes was just their face being obscured.

So i'll assume those things are somewhat like Mammets.
Maybe they're supposed to be Vivis.

Sorry, failure of a joke on my part. But I do agree that the Dwarves dark faces and glowing eyes is just a way to show concealed faces on sprites. Same thing with the Black Mages of FFI really, the class wasn't a different race like FFIX's Black Mages, just a human with a concealed face.
Wrally who?
