Gender Locked Gear

Why do you guys gender lock gear? I've put up with this for a while but when you gender lock hats, things start feeling a little bit overly discriminatory. Who thought it would be a good idea to make a "male" and "female" version of the Feathered Flat Hats given as rewards for the Valentione's Day quest? It's absurd. I take personal offense to this as someone who identifies as a member of the GLBT community. Other MMO's allow any character to dress in ANY gear they want regardless of gender. MMOs are about self expression. Who are you to dictate how people express themselves? Also, it seems that the female toons are allowed to wear much of the "male" gear (though not all of it I'll admit) while the males can't wear female pieces at all and that is blatant discrimination. If female toons can wear items traditionally for men, the male toons should be able to also don a dress or bunny ears should they so desire. This time you've gone too far, SE. Fix this.

Gender locking a hat that males also get, just with an alternate accessory color, is going too far?

This has been a point of consternation for quite a few posters here, with female avatars getting more attention from the devs in respect to glamour gear. It's an excuse to pander, that's all. I, too, would like the scales to be balanced. If you're going to make a boob or belly window variation, put it on all gear and make it optional, like /visor.

I can agree the hat is pretty absurd but I don't feel like that's going too far. I do want them to give me the black feather hat though I have an outfit and everything :c

Edit: I'd like to add that I agree; the guys need to get more attention [I believe in general they're lacking so much from the girls it's kinda sad]

Because they don't owe you anything and there's no scale that "needs" tipping. Don't use actual important words like "discrimination" because you're angry you can't wear a specific pretend hat. It's a video game and they can make the glamour balance whatever they want, and you tacitly agree to it by paying the sub fee. Deal with it.

I think a better solution would be making the feathers dye able too..like you know "red beret" dyed black because I did that....I think this would of been the better option..maybe then I would of used the hat item, that's like my only complaint.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. When literally the only difference is the color of the feather, why bother gender locking it at all? To keep the guys from wearing pink? Oh no, can't have that, might offend someone's delicate masculinity.

This has been a point of contention for a long time now. Females get tons of glamour options that males have no counterpart to, in essence giving us "Female" and "Unisex" glamours for most items. It's been discussed ad nauseam in countless threads and many of us that play male avatars (not all of which are actually male IRL) would definitely like more glamour options.

But seriously, you're that mad about the hats? This is the straw you've declared as having broken the camel's back? It seems like a pretty weak one and the shameful amount of hyperbole you're indulging in just makes your post look a bit silly. :/

No its not an overraction, its really stupid to genderlock an item for such a thing, someone lost work hours genderlocking a hat because it had a pink termination. Thats what your subscription is paying for, and if you are ok with that, then whatever.

Genderlocking items should come to an end completely, period, this kind of silly locks on items only add to the fault of the excesive ammount of genderlocked items already in game.

Hate that some things are genderlocked. For a cosplay that i'm trying to do i need some short pants and the hempen underpants would seem to fit, but I cant use them because I have a female character. :(
I could understand somewhat for dresses to be genderlocked but even that seems ridiculous when you look at some of the tomestone gear that clearly are skirts wearable by males?!

I'm actually fine with genderlocking as long as there's an equivalent for each gender. I don't like the current "Female/Unisex" distribution of glamours at all. On the other hand, I'd be just as happy without genderlocking. It should be all or nothing. But seriously, taking "personal offense" to these hats in particular (to the point where they had to go all tumblr on us and mention the LGBT thing) and declaring this precise item as the point where SE has "gone too far" is a little silly if you ask me.

i actually agree with this for the same reason i agree with the idea of race locked gear. under the conditon one side does not get picked for favorites (i.e. one side gets more options)

I think there should be more gender based gear or something similar so we can have more unique designs for both sides. I'm quite tired of unisex designs that everyone can look the same in when wearing.

Yeah, the hat being gender locked is very odd, something like the bunny ears, too.
Although we really can't win them all.

While at that, I really disagree on people who want the race-specific gear to be allowed for everybody though. There's not much gear diversity in the races. Same with male-only gear being wearable by females, there's never much incentive for players to choose a male character.

At least some of the Esoteric gear is somewhat different for both genders. I hope they make it look more different for both next time.

Because skirts are something males actually accept wearing...in days of old that is, and depends on what kind it is. Not surprising it's the same in Hydaelyn.

Absolutely, I'm all for equality. Would love to see a new racial gear set some day for everyone.

On a holliday i once did to indonesia we all had to wear a sarong when visiting some temples, including the males. A sarong is a piece of cloth you wrap around you and looks mostly like a skirt.

I would honestly like to see more of this, too. There's not a lot of gear that looks 'right' on a Roegadyn male (though when we find glamour that does look good on us... yes).

I kinda agree on one point to this have you ever seen a female lalafell wearing the thavnairian set?! or even the swimsuit sets they utterly murder them if your gonna let the lalas have swimsuits have them changed to something fitting of those anklebiters! as for the thavnairian set No! Just no stop letting them wear it.

But at the same time they do need to unlock some stuff like south seas talisman top wears the top with tattoo for females? it can't be that hard to add in a bikini top can it? they do it for other outfits of the swimsuit type the closest thing females get to a tattoo shirt is the ninja and monk tops at lvl 50 the arachne stuff but that's unisex so even males can wear it but it's only for them no other jobs/classes but the males get two tattoo tops?

Fun fact, cute cat eared girls wearing cute mini skirts sells good here in Japan. Roez malez wearing cute mini skirts... well sure in a minority, but that ain't getting on any poster.

What about cat boys or a race that isn't a Roe? If a male Roe were able to wear it, then the others would as well. Even the male potatoes.

I've always loathed diversity for the sake of diversity. There's nothing wrong with gear that is limited to specific races, classes or genders. I really, really wish that the vocal portion of the community who get up in arms over this sort of thing came to realise that and stopped trying to guilt trip players/developers by making them seem like bigots for having pride in their gender, race or class.

Nu uh, first thing first is making those bunny suit unisex for males. Males-only gear is really lacked right now.

No, we need more of it. If SE isn't gonna put in the work to make differences in the gear or etc between every race, I rather keep the gender locks. I'm tired of everything looking the same for everyone.

but at the same time if a man wants to dress with woman gears and vice-versa, more so in a fantasy game, there shouldnt be those gender locked stuff, especially in this case, a hat that could be unisex if made dyable since the only thing that changes is the colour of the Feather.

Some spoke of *fear* and gets offended, this is not a question of fear is just a matter of leaving the choice to people to dress as they see fit and find what suits them best be it in wht is supposed to be male or female gears and, customize their toon the way they want without having a limitation that makes no sense and that way SE could allocate ressources to better things then gender locked material.

It would be no problem to give the hat another accessory color while equiped by a male without gender locking it.
There are already gear that change the look depending on the gender without a gender-lock.

I can understand some limitations, such as the Lightning clothing, bunny set etc...

It's not a problem of discrimination or lack of expressions. That gear was made for a specific sex, so it just doesn't fit properly on a different one or it doesn't represent what it intends to represent.
For example, a male wearing Lightning's gear wouldn't represent Lightning at all, because Lightning is female.
You can start a discussion about "but there are other games that switched sex between games, such as Spiderman and Spiderwoman etc etc!" but this is not the case; Lightning is Lightning, a she.
Now you'll be like "but I am free, I should be able to wear whatever I want!" and yes, you should, but that specific gear represents something in this world, therefore you can't change it's purpose.

Real world stuff should't affect a fantasy world, since this world is not a representation of the real one, therefore it has different rules and people should understand them.


We've reached a point in society that now everything can be discriminaory; it's too chaotic sometimes. I like to play fantasy games so I can escape reality, so please, don't try to change it :/
