Saving Limit Breaks as a coup de grâce is stupid.

Just something that bothers me, that every four man pug I'm in seems to do. They'll refuse to use their limit breaks on the first couple of bosses, just leave the bar sitting there topped out and for the final Boss, once the second bar is filled, they'll refuse to use it until the boss is at 4% health or thereabouts.

People! This is wasteful. Why save a limit break for the point in a fight when you don't even need it anymore? By this point, not only have you dragged the fight out unnecessarily, you won't even get to see the full animation because it'll clip out for the victory cinematic. So what is the point of doing this?? It's not a trump card if you don't use it. Are you people having some kind of anime-esque power fantasy where you're pointing your fingers at the monster and screaming: "OBLITERATE! AHHHHHH!"

Stop doing this! Use your limit breaks on earlier bosses! Use your 2-bar LB on the final boss as soon as it's filled! Here's another exclamation point!

A thought just occured to me.

Fire 2 x2 > SC > Flare > Convert > Flare > BLM LB.

O_O.

I've got to try that one day on trash mobs.

So I can get yelled at.

Never understood that tactic either. In the latest dungeons LB doesnt even do that much, often taking berely 1% of the boss. Its better i think to gather a bigish mob group together and LB them with an caster/ranged one. Would speed the run up a lot more.

Aiming a bard LB can be tricky though. Once tried to shoot all 4 alarums on fractal with a LB and came very close to missing them due to casting delay.

they might just be focusing on something else and notice it late

its not like it will build back up to lb1, and even if it does it doesn't do much. it doesn't really matter.

In a lot of instances these days, the boss even dies before the second bar has filled. When I'm on a melee job I'm usually trying to gauge how fast the boss is dying versus how fast the bar fills. Sometimes when it's close I misjudge whether it's going to get there and I wind up hitting the LB1 super late as a result.

I suspect a lot of this is that people don't have a good sense of how fast the LB recharges and they don't want to get to the boss without it.

I use LB1 as BLM on trash all the time but I feel my party secretly hates me for it.

I love when blm / smn cast lb1/2 on trash.

It's a weird habit of the player base that has been going on for a long, long while. I personally don't get it either, but hey...I am a tank, I don't get to LB xD

What I think it is, is that with so many folks expecting to use it as the last hit on the last boss, folks are just scared to pull it off without offending someone or their party. I don't understand the mentality myself, as I would rather have it used during large mob pulls or once on each boss (which I have done, damn those that get pissed off) if DPS is low.

Sometimes, folks do forget to. I know jumping from my DRK to my NIN I always forget it's there..so yea there is that.

Haha, that reminds me of a time I was running MogEx with FC mates to help clear. I usually main whm and don't get to LB either. That one time, I had to switch to monk, they were missing a melee, and already had 2 healers. Then there comes the Memento, and I hear my mates on TS calling me for LB. I panicked, realizing I had forgotten to have it on my hotbar, opened the menu, tried to find it quickly. Too late. Memento was cast. After that total derp, must say we had a great laugh :)

Hell, that's fine too! The tank pulls a whole floor, yolos all his cooldowns and you wipe everything out in one blow. That's synergy! Way better than someone dropping a nuke on a boss with two percent health.

Ive already seen a blm get yelled at for doing that. If only because appatently only melee dps should lb, regardless of the situation. ;p

That is awful. That kind of hierarchical nonsense wherein someone calls 'dibs' on a group resource is worthy of ten thousand kicks to the metaphorical shin. Sometimes the tank pulls a dumb move and needs to be saved. Sometimes the group is in desperate need of a heal. Sometimes a hive of bugs needs the bottom of the boot! If the group wipes, then no-one gets to use the damn bar.

I found the opposite true: noone uses the LB. The LB could fill all the way during a boss and noone uses it. As a tank, I have to actually tell someone to before it will go off. People are way too timid when it comes to using the LB.

From my perspective, I'll use LB when I have a safe opening. It's not fun getting animation locked then getting trampled to death + blown up in flame pillars + having my SICKNESS PURGED.

Which might be caused by the other mentioned mentality. They have seen too many times someone else being yelled at for using it "wrong", "wrong" time or "wrong" class or what have you. I try to use the LB on boss fights as soon as it's filled, it does the same amount of damage anyway. Only delay it if I know the boss is prone to invulnerability bouts so it won't hit those.

I follow Monk mentality: if the LB (or LB difference between melee and other) is only doing some 12k damage just let me keep my 8 seconds and have the 500 dps ranged do it instead...
Wait until 5%, ranged still hasn't used it. Well, it'd just be overkill by now. Might as well not get hit by AoEs...

Haven't you seen the lengthy macros invoking the 12 to fill them with power so they may smite their enemies, or something along those lines? It seems to be a fairly common thing.

Sorry... but I LB trash mobs at the drop of a hat. Much rather push the run there then shave off .0000001 sec off the final boss fight because the DRG finally wants to pull the trigger as the screen begins to turn black on a boss that has done nothing to scare the party in the slightest.

The other day I was in a group of all green leaves during leveling roulette who were close to kicking me for it. Seriously lectured hard after that one. I just didn't have it in me to fight back... haha.

When PuGing
LB1 on first boss is almost always out of the question because the LB gauge almost never fills before the boss is dead.
As melee, I will LB the 2nd boss to start the fight, this allows enough time for the LB gauge to fill again before the 3rd boss fight starts.
As ranged/caster, I will LB a large trash pull or two.

When with my FC mates
As Healer and Tank, we make a game of it to see which, most inappropriate LB can be used first.

Imo using LB early is the better option in most cases, several jobs have "finishing" moves only usable in the last 20%:
NIN: Assassinate
MCH: Heartbreak
BRD:Misery's End
WAR: Mercy stroke (also available as x-class)
So using LB to take the boss TO the last 20% will shorthen the fight more than using LB to skip the last part of the fight.
Exception being fights where you can skip a mechanic in the last part of the fight (only dungeon that i can think of right now being Brayflox HM where you can skip the last set of adds and the big bomb)

Had a BLM use LB1 on a big trash pull in WM hard yesterday and the tank and I complimented the BLM for it. He said "yeah I think these big trash pulls were designed for caster LB1." The mobs just melted, it was beautiful.

pretty much this. if the dps miss a good opportunity to use it on boss- I normally tell them to save it and ask the tank to do a large pull so I can just LB it. But yea its one of my peaves when I run a tank and the LB bar stays full the whole time- while I am guilty of tunnel visioning but I do not let the bar just sit there looking pretty :)

probably they want to save the LB for the healer? i actually had to use healer LB2 one time in my 3700 dungeon runs o.o/

Love it when people refuse to use the LB until the boss has a pixel of HP left instead of half way through when the bar filled. Maybe if you used it when it was up we might get a second in? This isnt often the case but on bosses in raids you sometimes do get the chance to use 2 LBs. sometimes I use the lb when it's up during the fight and I can immediately hear the other members being frothing at the mouth with anger even though not using it serves no tactical advantage.

Limit Break 1 is usually a dps loss, more so if any dps is using any buffs. Then you have to think of time it takes to make sure certain buffs stay active, due to its castbar (Greased Lightning, Blood of the Dragon), and re-apply accordingly, they decided if/when its safe to use it so as to not be animation locked. LB2 isn't used much in dungeouns, and if people use LB1 all willy nilly, you will prolly never see LB2.

I have got yelled at in the past for some odd reason using blm lb on like 2 groups of trash, i think it was a healer stating we need lb for final fight....

When going as mellee i always use lb on first boss usually. The bar build back up fast enough to have lb2 for final encounter.....

I remember back when I was a pugilist getting yelled at for using the lb on the boss as soon as the fight started. I have seen it in a lot of instances where it is either a healer or a tank trying to dictate when the dps use it. Which leads to them causing wipes or trying to get the dps killed.

Oh yeah Im totally going to try it.

As bard or caster if LB up, big pull... hell yeah I'll drop it on the mobs. If no big pulls though then I don't care about it to be honest.

Was tanking Amdapor Keep HM the other day with me and the Bard being the only vets. Our timer ran out on the deamon walls right as the bees spawned and right as I go "Ah shit" and go Hallowed Ground + Sword Oath I see the Bard fire his Limit Break and saved us from the wipe.

I let him know immediately that it was an excellent judgment call on his part.

Oh I wish people would stop doing it but I really doubt they will. Just use a LB as soon as you can. I want to scream when we are sitting on a LB2 or LB3 for ages and nobody uses it until about 2% because they want to be like Naruto and do a cool finishing move. Half the time the bar fills at like 40% and nobody ever uses the damn thing.

Would be so much easier if everyone had their own LB meters. Getting tired of this sharing is caring nonsense.

Generally you don't even get 1 bar before the first boss dies, and if you use your bar on the 2nd you won't fill it before reaching the final meaning you only get to LB1 it.

This means the optimal time to LB is between the 1st and 2nd boss, generally ranged DPS on a mass-pull. (or for SMA melee LB on the wall)

The only exception is on a well-orgainzed party (speedrun strats), you can force-charge LB if the healer allows the tank to drop below 10% on the first trash pull after each boss before healing. Each time they do this, it adds a gradual charge effect to the bar that doesn't stop until it fills. I know people complain about healing during Living Dead, but it's a perfect opportunity to grab this effect if the healer is good about it.

And yes, immediately once LB2 charges on final (or at least the first break in rotation you get), or DOESN'T charge because you're that fast and LB1 can finish, pop it.

I came to the same conclusion through experience, though on the odd time we get to LB the first boss it usually means DPS is low enough to fit in two LB's and then having a full bar again for the final boss. I always use mine as a Bard or Melee if applicable, though there have been a couple of runs where the Boss's HP plummeted suddenly from around 25-30% to 6-8% and then I realise it's too late, namely Neverreap, haha.

I hear LB does fixed damage, so TA doesn't affect it meaning you're wasting the debuff. I haven't seen any testing on it yet for hard data, tho.

You are correct, the damage is calculation of the average iLevel of the group. It ignore all de-buffs and buffs. Since it is constant, the weakest DPS of a particular type (melee, range, caster) should always be the one to activate the correct one for the situation.

If I'm rolling as a healer and no one is using the LB, then I'll pop it myself.

I tend to use LB to get through a priority target mechanic, like Titan's heart phase or when the Scorpion boss in one of the earlier dungeons sheds the skin off its tail.

As for final bossess, I save it for the second half of the fight where we have more mechanics to deal with. I figure at the start that everyone has cooldowns to blow thorough and no mechanics to interrupt their rotations so the damage is good enough.

If I ever use LB near the end of a fight its because I was waiting on LB 2. As soon as I decide LB to isn't happening though, I blow my load immediately.

I like when my DPS uses the mage LB on trash mobs. We don't always need to save it for a boss we know we can just push over when we know the mechanics to it. Use it when you get it.
