Some Warrior Q's

Hey guys. I've leveled my warrior now, and i've run a few simple things with it (alexander floor one, a few duty roulettes).

Now I feel slightly capable, but i know i'm far from playing the class very well. A few questions i'd like to pose.

1) Storms eye. Tooltip states "Decreases target's slashing resistance by 10%". Stupid question, this is going to increase the warriors dps on the target, not just the other dps of group? Also, do i want to prioritise getting storms eye up at the start of the fight?

2) Dealing with high damage/CD management. I'm finding that I burn through my cooldowns quite quickly, and don't always have one ready for another high damage attack (mainly in alexander fights at the moment). How does a warrior manage their cooldowns effectively? For those "tank buster" moments, i realise we have holmgang, but am i missing something.

At the moment i'm simply trying to use those cooldowns, and ensure i have storms path up if i know some damage is incoming along with whatever other cooldown i have available, hopefully vengance (and inner beast if it's ready).

3) Gamepad layouts - I play on ps4, and while i've gotten my hud layout and hotbar layout to something i'm USED to, i'm aware that it's not very .. is optimal the right word? What do you guys have going on, any advice?

Yes storms eye increases your damage, no you don't have to use it as your first rotation in an opener, but do make sure it is your second, if you have a nin they normaly open with Dancing edge anyways but keep up storms eye and hopefully your NIN isn't an idiot and realises what you're doing and stops using dancing edge. just remember SE BB or SE SP once you have enough threat.

Combine your cooldowns with inner beast, it's the most effective way of using them, don't use vengence and thrill for tank busters use IB and Veng or IB and thrill unless of cause we are talking extreamly hard hitting tank crunchs that come around every 2 minutes or so (hypercompressed laser in floor 1 savage) then you can effectivly use IB thrill and Veng and you'll be sweet till it comes around again and in which case same deal.
main point pair cooldowns with innerbeast not with eachother.

as for gamepad layouts can't help you

Ahh, I see. I was wondering if that was the effect of storms eye. So it's worth getting that up along with main and then going nuts with berserk (i tend to combine berserk and bloodbath).

Combining cooldowns with IB, so that's what i'll have to start working on. I knew I was doing it wrong lol!

Gamepad - no worries, appreciate your thoughts on the other stuff anyway.

1) Priorize keeping aggro if you are tanking, if you are DPSing then you might want to have Storm's eye up ASAP. It increases your own DPS as well (seeing as Great Axes are slashing damage)

2) Warriors don't have a lot of cooldowns to begin with, that's normal, will feel especially true if you played paladin effectively before. Warrior damage from DPSing also greatly comes from stacked cooldowns in my own experience (someone can correct me on this). As a warrior you are going to want to pop some cooldowns on tank busters but it "probably" won't feel as effective as say a paladin mitigating tank busters.

3) Control scheme is 100% personal. There is absolutely no "optimal" ways to go on about this. The most "optimal" way to have your controls set up is to get used to something that works for you.

Morning Sareal, thanks for your input. Here are my responses:

1) I should have been more clear on my OP lol. I was thinking along the lines of once i've established adequate threat what order of debuffs should i be looking at, but yep, I'll remember to have SE up for when i'm rocking deliverance now :)

2) You're right, it does feel really strange / less effective without the paladins' myriad tank busters, but this is what i'm trying to get used to. I'm going to start using the pairing a cooldown with innerbeast mentioned by BattleGrace. At the moment it felt like i got to a high damage attack/phase and thought "oh crap, are these CD's i have left going to cover me?".

3) Quite right. I've gotten used to what i have i guess, but i'm now thinking about adding an extra hotbar on the screen to display things hidden in toggle hotbars on the pad, as if i can't see it, i often forget it's there/ready (see inner beast lmao!).

I haven't played warrior optimally, but from personal experience (coming from paladin) I feel I must trust my healers a lot more. I guess warrior's main responsibility is just to "soak" the tank buster by having an proper cooldown up to mitigate the buster by that much, but by no means is it going to save you everytime. At least, that is how I feel it.

As for the controls, I guess I can suggest enabling the extra hotbars you get from using Left & Right trigger simultaneously. When I discovered this, I was able to sort my abilities in such a way that I didn't need to toggle and then accidentally use an ability I didn't mean to, due to the fact I was still on the wrong bar and didn't notice.

the biggest problem you will ever encounter if knowing weather or not said attacks and tank busters are magical or physical, if they are indeed physical everything is sweet but if they are magical then 2 of your cooldowns do become useless ( foresight and raw intuition) but hey atleast you don't get shafted as hard as pally on that front.
as to high damage non tank buster attacks innerbeast alone is normaly fine perhaps with one of your smaller less DR based cooldowns just incase you feel abit unsafe.
remember it's ok to fuck up and use too many cooldowns, wipe and retry as long as you learn from it and thats realy the be all end all is just learning what you can and can not get away with.

once you really understand warrior its quite the contrary tbh. Your cds are on shorter timers so if your healers mess up you can usually afford to burn extra depending on phasing, at the expense of pushing dps stance. on pld you really cant mix things up. You have one single penultimate rotation with no intuition, improvisation or alternative strategies. Just follow the routine, rinse and repeat.

Once you combine IB woth anything you have a potent combo. You really are hard to kill. Think about it this way, if you IB a tank buster, your a pld woth 25% more hp in shield oath.

Thrill of battle+IB= pld in Sh.Oath with 50% more HP. What in the world would kill a pld with 50% more hp? Not much.

IB+foresight (weakest CD we have)=26.4% damage reduction (to physical) on top of defiance. Better than pld in Sh.Oath with rampart (20%. The stances cancel out) but only for physical.

Warrior isn't nearly as squishy as it looks. It's actually super sturdy vs frequent tank busters because that's what IB is great at. Taking 1 hit every 20-30 sec. It's REALLY good at that.

Have faith in the IB. Believe in the IB. Become one with the IB. Use less CDs, use more IB. It's an on demand rampart. Nothing squishy about that.

Agreed. WAR HP tend to yoyo a lot more than PLD HP simply due to the nature of their tank stance (and you'll notice even more hp gain/loss on top of that if the WAR is stance dancing because their HP pool itself shrinks and grows). As a healer it can be a little alarming at first (seriously you think they're gonna die), but you get used to it. The self-healing is absolutely nuts, though. I've critted myself for nearly 14k with Equilibrium, 5k with Second Wind, and Bloodbath actually helps quite a bit on AoE pulls.

Good WARs are an absolute joy to heal. They use their cooldowns effectively and use their self-healing in such a way that it extends the healer's DPS windows dramatically. Bad WARs are about the squishiest thing with a blue icon and require constant babysitting.

You'd be better off saying IB + Foresight = Rampart + Foresight. Don't forget that Paladins can cross-class Foresight.

So really you're just reiterating that IB = Rampart, albeit only for 6 seconds at a time and requiring a GCD. :3

Yeah its just driving home that war isn't "squishy" at all on tabk busters. One you realize that defiance=shield oath and IB=rampart, all of wars "crappy" CDs are built onto that already very sturdy base. I still don't know why the myth persists that war is the "squishy" tank.

i play one ps4. i find it extremely beneficial to only use two sets of crossbars.

my first crossbar has my main dps/tank rotations on the "R2" side. and main def cds on the "L2" side, besides Thrill and Inner Beast (more to follow as to why.)

2nd hotbar-

L2 side

Left D/PAD- Defiance
Up D/PAD- Deliverance
Down D/Pad- STR Pot
Right D/Pad- Convalescence

Triangle- Provoke
Square- LB
X- Fell Cleave
Circle- Decimate/Marker

R2 Side- (Mainly Defiance related skills.)

Left D/Pad- Thrill of Battle
Right D/Pad- Equilibrium
Down D/Pad- Second Wind
Up D/Pad- Storm's Eye, reason its here is due to convenience of use.

Triangle- Infuriate
Square- Unchained
Circle- Steel Cyclone
X- Inner Beast.

i also macro Awareness with Raw Intuition to save space, But mainly because it compliments Raw Intuition very nicely.

this is just what im use to. to each their own really. do whatever is comfortable. I find it less convenient to use skills that are on the L2 area of the controller. so all my main attack abilities are easily accessible on "action" buttons. Besides Storms Eye, idk why its so comfortable to use it there lol.

when it comes to magic based attacks. its always important to look to your other players in the group. have a BLM? Apoc is an instant cast skill they have.

If a BLM has an issue with using it, then theyre not a good BLM.

The more I read these forums the more apparent the class devs idea of the pld shield block isn't a consideration of the player base. You can see in all these posts about war and pld very rarely is pld block considered. I assume its because in the raid meta block and parry can't be counted on for mitigation.

alot of people ask for pld to get an aoe damage spell because the current meta is to deal damage. Pld doesn't get aoe because it can block autoattacks and a war can't gen wrath to spend on mitigation using overpower. This keeps the class idea of pld being defensive and war being an offensive tank but doesn't work in the current meta.

Look at IB it reduces all damage by 20% and costs stacks. Pld blocks for more mitigation but it's rng can proc 5 times in a row or not at all and only physical. Blocking a flatten was awesome your health would barely move but your healers healed like you didn't block anyway cause they can't afford it if you didn't.

inner beast being a skill also makes it makes it better for stacking with cool downs on tank busters. I guess sheltron can do this now but for more mitigation against physical. Imo the devs need to reavaluate the role of block in the content design.

Also thrill is often over looked. Its as good as rampart for increasing your eHP to eat a tank buster but lacks the natural eHealing rampart provides. For single hit spike it holds its own pair it with con for ongoing mitigation.

Pros and cons they are very well balanced. But content design is highlighting the cons of one class.

I play on PC, and I use a gamepad. I prefer the UI setup for the gamepad more so than that of the keyboard and mouse. Holding down right and left bumpers or right and left triggers for various abilities is simple, easy and much preferred by many, including myself.

PLD isn't the defensive tank. WAR also isn't the offensive tank. This has nothing to do with the meta. The issue is tanking is not such a duality, it is a singularity in the case of WAR and not in the case of PLD. On one hand, you see dev comments about how PLD can't have damage because they're a defense focused tank. On the other hand, you see WARs with internal synergy that means their damage increases their survivability and their survivability increases their damage. Nevermind the reality that even in terms of pure defense, WAR outclasses PLD.

There is a massive inequality here. WAR defense is on-par or better than PLD. PLD offense lags behind WAR by a country mile. If you want to make PLDs the better defensive tank, then make the difference equal. In most cases, you see WARs dealing 130%+ of a PLD's DPS. Why doesn't a PLD have 130%+ the eHP of a WAR? If there are scenarios where you cannot pass a DPS check without a WAR, there should be scenarios where a PLD is the only tank that can live through incoming damage.

However, that's just horrible design. So, nobody is asking for that type of garbage. They are asking for homogenized balance instead. That is why you see requests for more AoE damage and whatnot.

Do people consider block? Yes, obviously. People consider PLD better in A2S partially because of block. For content like A3S and Thordan EX, block is huge. Obviously people acknowledge the usefulness.

Content design obviously plays a big part in class balance. But, that is more in relation to DRK and PLD because of their differing damage affinities. Outside of very specific situations, WAR will never be forced out of content and double WAR could easily be better even if you adjusted content to be better for PLD.

I play with a controller too, and once you're accustomed to it, it is as effective as mouse/keyboard.

My two tips to make it smoother :
1) Make one macro for Defiance and one for Deliverance. In each macro, you can set the action tied to your stance at the same spot "Inner Beast/Fell Cleave" and "Steel Cyclone/Decimate". It will help save some space.
2) Display a hotbar to put every CD not in your main crosshotbar so that you can see when each one is ready.

Or, they could improve PLD to bypass most of the tank swap/dual tanks setup (And reducing even more its DPS for balance). Your choice : Two tanks or one PLD.

Thrill and Rampart are not equivalent. Rampart increases eHP by 25%, ToB only by 20%.

that's true if its additive and not multiplicitive
defiance + thrill is a 50% increase in hp not a 45%

Shieldoath + rampart is a 36% damage reduction and not a 40%

((20000x1.25)1.2)=30000 or +50%
((25000).8).8)=16000 or -36%

25k dam would kill any 20k hp tank in tank stance popping either thrill or rampart would allow the tank to survive with 20% total hp left

What are you even calculating there?

WAR 20k base HP and ToB = 20,000 * 1.2 = 24,000 eHP (+20% eHP)

PLD 20k base HP Rampart = 20,000 / 0.8 = 25,000 eHP (+25% eHP)

Edit:
A 36% damage reduction is btw a 56,25% increase in eHP.

I might be flamed for this but what the heck, you want to enjoy this class, and I have mained everything as a Warrior since 2.0 so here it goes.

1) Storm's Eye is the ultimate combo you put out. Only 20 potency less than your Butcher Block, yet it is so much more damage. One, maim is 20% increase on ALL damage, and two, Storm's Eye increases your damage again on all your attacks, your OT's attacks, and saves the random Ninja your playing with a dps loss. Your IB's will be more potent health returns, all attacks(including Overpower) under Bloodbath will yield more hp returns, and when you pop Berserk, look out. Storm's Path, on the other hand is situational in most content. When your in a progression group for end game raids, sure you want storm's Path up as much as possible. 1st boss of Alwaysreap? who cares really. Fights are very structured in this game, so overall knowledge of the encounter can help you time Storm's Path for the big hits only.

Opening with SE is viable, do it all the time. Your boss opener should go Infuriate>Tomahawk>Unchained>Storm's Eye combo>Brutal Swing>Butcher Block's Combo. You have aggro no prob, and now Maim and Storm's eye up. Feel free to rotate another Storm's Eye in while waiting for Unchained to wear off, then you're ready to swap to Deliverance and own it.

TL; DR Storm Eye trumps BB once you have attained aggro; Deliverance is your best friend, own it.

2) When it comes to CDs, again knowledge of the fight your in and the timimg of all the major mechanics/Moves the boss has is always more important than a generalised CD rotation. Example; I'm MT for Alex 4 nm, we attack left leg first, and I'm in Deliverance by the time the first orbs pop. Lucky for me they start spawning in the 11 o'clock corner. I can now step back a bit to line up with them, pop holmgang on the leg and eat all 3 orbs while not losing aggro or dps, Healer fixes me and away we go. That is a very suituational example, but I hope it clearly demonstrates my point that each fight should be looked at individually instead of relying on a generic CD rotation.
Another strong example is building stacks in Deliverance, tank buster cast bar appears, make a quick switch to Defiance, use that IB, follow it up with Equilibrium to fill your HP bar and wait on the auto attack to take you back to 15-17k hp, then back to Deliverance.

TL:DR learn the fight

3) I play PS4, and I could list my hotbar here but I'd find that pointless. Easy points I could mention is 2 hotbars, youll need at least 2 for the amount of skills you have by lvl 60. Again there are ways to shorten this. Most ppl will tell you action macros are terribad, but again it depends on their execution. Currently , I use 3 action macros, 2 of them for combos and 1 for buffs. I don't have Heavy swing on my action bar, what I do have is a macro that does Heavy Swing>Skull Sunder> Butcher Block. I still have both those 2 actions on the bar, since you have to use /wait 3 and the GCD is 2.5 so I will click Skull Sunder and Butcher Block manually. Thing is, If I lag, or I have to move
I don't want my combo to fizzle and lose a stack, so having this combo macro'd to my heavy swing makes sure I never lose aggro, even if it takes an extra 1 second to do it. I have the same macro for SE combo on Bar 2, but again I have Maim, Storm's Path and Storm's Eye on my bar so I can execute them manually and fall back on my macro if something happens, it's like a safety net.

My 3rd macro is my one button buffer; I placed the skills in the macro according to priority, so really I only have to hit one button repeatedly to either pop em all(for huge roulette speed pulls) or pop them based on what I need for the situation individually. Again spend sometime fooling around with it to figure out your personal order, but my goes: Internal Release( 30 second CD)>Featherfoot>Foresight>Convalescence>Awareness>Blood Bath(I should point out that I also have Bloodbath on my hot bar separately, but it's last in line here so I can pop em all for speed run without too much thought)

The order of priority is important; Internal release should be combo'd with Berserk for those badass triple Fell Cleaves(If your skill speed allows it) but both Blood Bath and Berserk are on 90 sec cds, so I have IR there at the front to utilize it more often. Featherfoot is next due to being fluff that I only use for Duties that allow dodge, and I want it popped before anything else for fluff mitigation. Same for Foresight; I see no reason for this not to be up As Much As Possible. Convalescense is nice for helping a healer out while you're in Deliverance, same goes for Awareness( ppl will argue this should be combo'd with Raw Intution, not I. If you can't keep the mobs in front of you, either don't pop it, or go practice some more rookie. Using them separately grants you two different CDs, and I like to burn my RI a lot to push those Fell cleaves/IB's)

Ultimately, set your bar up in a way you can comfortably use your actions when you need to. There really isn't a "top" hot bar placement, and play experience will help you decide what to do with your hotbar more than looking around for someone's.

TL;DR: Muscle Memory; set that hotbar up to fit you in a way you do not have to even look at to do what you want to do.

I've tried to keep my most often used skills on the R2 side of things to make it easier to move around with L3 (since L2 side uses the directional pad). I usually will just hold down R2 so those skills are up and it let's me target quickly as well.

This would allow me to move two more powers to Hotbar 1. I'm thinking Provoke and Berserk. And then maybe add HP/VIT/STR potion or spine drops or something to Hotbar 2. I did this already on my DRG for Fang and Claw and Wheeling Thrust. Not sure why I didn't think of it here. Kudos!

Thrill should be 24k there.

The difference in eHP provided by Thrill and Rampart is tiny. Anything you could reliably survive with Rampart could be survived by Thrill too, and using Convalescence with it will also provide only slightly less healing compared to a PLD with Rampart.

And a note of correction to my post above. I did that hotbar graphic from memory and I ended up giving myself 6 cross class skills :D The Featherfoot slot was actually another Provoke in case I selected the wrong expanded hotbar during a swap and did not want to waste any time. But I'm working on a complete retool now using those handy macros. I've tied IB/FC together as well as SC/Decimate. Now i need to implement the fancy version using the actual skill icons. Additionally, I dropped Second Wind and picked up Internal Release which I also added to the afore mentioned macros (Iagainsti talked me into getting IR with some good points above). IR will probably be up by the time any of those Wrath powers are ready to use, so seems like a no-brainer. I think I still prefer Awareness to Featherfoot though. I also replaced Heavy Swing with a full BB combo macro, a la Iagainsti once again (thanks!). Anyway, that's about it for now.

Seriously, you're welcome and I am glad my 2 cents help you and anyone else clarify things. Concerning cross classes, Second Wind's healing potency meshes with Warrior very well as an instant heal(especially with a full Str spec and Berserk up, it's beyond ridiculous, and then your chance for it to crit, it becomes godly) and shouldn't be overlooked, especially in end game content. Featherfoot is what you have already come to realize, more fluff than anything, and is great for large pulls as your first pop, but is only relevant in content where dodge is possible, and should be dropped for any raiding.

I'm a devout believer in not leaving your cross class skills "static" and always tell ppl who are willing to listen to adjust per what you are currently tackling. When I run roulettes or help lower levels clear content, I tend to drop Awareness and Provoke for Flash and Featherfoot for sake of speed. When raiding, outside of SA2 where flash is useful, I swap them both out again for Provoke and Awareness. Now if only I could find a really good reason to utilize Haymaker.....

Anyway, you'll love Second Wind's "Holy Sh** Button" utility in Deliverance when combo'd with increase to crit chance provided by wrath stacks and/or Berserk and IR.

The problem with Apoc is its duration and lockout which makes it extremely situational, requiring the BLM to know when a tank buster is coming. You're not going to find many that will use it.

You want to keep up Storms Eye at all times since it not only increases your damage, but the damage of all tanks and ninjas.

For Cooldowns you are best off combining them with Inner Beast, only use storms eye if you absolutely need it as it is the lowest dps combo. That being said it is one of warriors most useful skills.

For your hotbar layout honestly if it works for you then it is optimized. I would recommend organizing it with your most used things like gcds and very common cooldowns like Brutal Swing on your main hotbar, then your less used on your second/expanded hotbar. I would definitely recommend using the expanded hotbar Its easy access and very useful, but again if your layout works for you then go for it.

I think I'm pretty close to final hotbars for my WAR. Unchained now appears. I swapped Flash for Second Wind and put that and Equilibrium on cross hotbar #1 now as quick "oh sh!t" buttons. Any Provoke situation I should be able to plan for so it got put on chb #2. I removed food as that can be done ahead of any fighting and added Hi-elixir and Spine Drops. I hate Paralysis. I might try to find a way to tie Internal Release into the Wrath/Abandon powers somehow. Or Unchained. Not exactly sure how to use Uch exactly. Maybe as enmity generation when Berserk is down? Overall it feels really good so far tho.

I believe the common practice is to pull with defiance/unchained then as it's wearing off switch to deliverance and pop berserk for fell cleavage. This would mainly just be if you're tanking something tho, wouldn't use it in an OT rotation.
