Does anyone know if there will be a discount on the subscription fee for ff14 for those that play ff11? Originally there was a plan to do this and thus curious if there is a still a plan to do so.

Probably not, I recall it being vice versa because XI is a much older service and it was a perk of moving over to/playing both games.
This has been in place since the start. You just couldn't see it because we've been getting XIV for free. As long as you have an active XI character, you will receive a discount on XIV subscriptions.
Whether or not this changes when XIV goes into subs is up in the air.
Yeah, this option will make or break whether I pay for XIV or not. Or even continue to pay for XI. At the moment I am a little annoyed that most of the money from my XI sub goes to XIV... if there isn't a combined sub I will have to consider whether I want to pay for a game I am not playing while the game I am playing is starved of content.
To be fair though, XI is almost 10 years old and also to be fair, when you purchase games from a company who have multiple series under their belts, you're guaranteed the money is going to a lot of things. You bought Mass Effect 1 and 2? Guarantee the profits went towards 3 and their upcoming MMO.
XI is in no way starved of content, unless you're one of the very few players who've completed everything, including all 3 "Ultimate Weapons". (Relic, Mythic, Empyrean) though I'll admit Abyssea made the game feel like it is starved of content because it's all people would wanna do.
I don't call grinding currency for relic upgrades/grinding for money to buy alex "content"
I agree there is a lot there and I wouldn't have a problem with some of the cash being used for XIV (yes that is standard) - but the lacklustre updates we are getting (along with mods on the forums admitting XI is running on a "skeleton crew") upset me.
I think as a paying customer, I have a right to expect that the mmo I am paying for would not be starved to pay for another mmo.
The way single player games work is a lot different. I don't care what the money I pay for mass effect goes to, as long as I actually get the game. I am not paying over and over for it - and if I was, I would expect to get the content I am paying for, not paying for someone else to play a game free for a year.
Anyway, I have no problem with them charging either for XI or XIV, I just think given the fact most of the money I pay for XI goes to XIV - I should get a deal on the rates.
If that doesn't happen, I may reconsider the company I am supporting, which is my right as a customer. If you don't play XI, I don't blame you for not being upset I and other XI players are paying for the game you do play.
Is there an answer about this yet?
SE did have a promotion announced that would allow a discount of $5.95 USD a month on each POL (FFXI) Account that was linked to a SE account with a FFXIV Service account. Both accounts (POL and FFXIV) had to be in a status of being paid accounts. It was a 1 to 1 pairing of accounts (POL and FFXIV) within the same SE account.
However, it was a very limited promotion in that the discount would only be given for at most 3 months. The promotion was simply scheduled to end after that.
In the months that the discount was going to be given to the FFXI account, the FFXIV account had to be in paid status on the 26th of the previous month, which meant that people that bought the standard edition would miss the first month since the standard edition didn't get released until the 30th of September 2010 (and thus, such an account would not have been in paid status yet on the 26th of October).
SE announced an extension of this discount period after the first two free play extensions, but the result would have been similar to the original provided FFXIV had actually started charging for subscriptions after those first 2 extensions. It still would have only been 2 or 3 months at most of FFXI discounts.. a maximum total of $17.85 USD per POL account.
Of course what really happened was the announcement of indefinite free play (which is only now about to come to an end). And because of that, the discounts were never given because no one has ever paid a FFXIV subscription fee (yet).
Once I realized the limited amount of this discount of $17.85 USD per POL account max, I sort of decided it was not a very good deal.
There has been no further word from SE if they will still apply this discount at all once paid subscriptions begin for FFXIV.
Can a Dev clarify this? As for the amount.... any reduction should be welcomed but again this could make or break whether a ton of people still play ff14.
The wording and format of the initial announcement about this specific promotion was confusing and at first I did think the same as you.. that January 2011 was a deadline to sign up for it instead of the date the whole promotion would end.
However, it became much more obvious in the announcement about extending this promotion to March 2011 that it was a limited promotion that would simply end in March 2011. It wasn't a deadline to sign up for it... .it was the end of the promotion entirely. FFXI rates would have reverted back to original rates the month after the end of the promotion ($12.95 a month for one character). There was never going to be a permanent discount under that promotion.
If this promotion is still going to be applied once subscription payments for FFXIV begin, SE is going to have to adjust it a bit since FFXI billing is no longer done on a calendar month basis except for the hold outs that still haven't transferred their POL billing to SE account billing.
Without a dev clarification on it, it's a matter of interpretation. the extension I figured was because of the free trial period and allowed extra time because no one had paid during the initial 3 months to get in on the promotion, but that it would be permanent if when it ended you were still paying for both, as long as you paid for both.
I may be naive in thinking this but that's how I interpreted the whole thing. A permanent promotion that was extended due to the free trial extensions. Then becoming irrelevant when the free trial was extended until further notice, thus not allowing the promotion to take effect in the first place.
Ah, well I would love to see it come back, even if only for a few months. It will really make or break my decision to pay or not.
SE seems to have some sort of relationship with Sony. They should look at Sony Online Entertainment Station All Access model. You pay $19.99 a month for every MMO in SOE's Line-up (10 games atm)and they have 3,6, and 12 month discounts.
That be awesome if ff11 joined the Sony package if there is one. On the other hand... has there been any word on what price SE plans to charge per game? and if they play to implement a discount?
