I heard they're adding 4k support for 3.2?
will they do HQ texture at the same time then?
it's about time we get a graphic upgrade after the initial downgrade...

The only thing they're updating is the UI afaik, texture and screen resolution are independent so the probability of adding HD textures are low.
A HD texture pack is something that's been requested for quite sometime now, but no answer to the request so far. Even if you're playing at 1080p, or 4k the textures look just as bad. They were were compressed with the mindset that you'd be zoomed out 90% of the time so it isn't really noticeable, which is true in outdoor areas but indoors and on armour it looks awful.
Honestly, the low quality textures of the game just ruin the tesellation and create weird mapping arround the whole game... A HQ texture pack is very needed, and i bet inside the community we have the people with the skills and the will to do something like that, but again, this game doesn`t support modding neither.
It`s painful to see the clothes textures on cutscenes or the shadows...
Once the PS3 support ends (praise the Twelve) they will have more incentive to create higher textures. I don't know when the next generation of consoles are due but by then people will simply not tolerate graphics from the VGA era in a top tier MMO.
Basically they downgraded the graphics in order to focus in gameplay and content. Yoshi called it "unhealthy obsession with graphics " back in GDC 2014. Maybe some time in future they will bring us HQ textures. Who knows. I do not expect any graphic updated before 4.0 and before they drop PS3 support.
So what about the low to mid-tier PC players? What are they supposed to do when you throw them out with the 'bath water' (consoles)? And I have to agree, it is a rather mindless obsession to want better and better graphics. In a couple years your 'high quality at the time' graphics will again be eclipsed by what's new and improved and we'll be right back here again with people demanding the graphics be improved yet again... I'd rather they spend those resources improving gameplay than graphics.
For one there are things called graphics settings, so even with high resolution textures they can be lowered. Also, a mid-tier PC can breeze through FFXIV, hell even a low-end PC could unless we're talking laptops or prebuilts. Regardless, your point is somewhat invalidated by the fact that they raised the minimum requirements for Heavensward without a second thought really. A HD texture pack would also not take anywhere near the amount of resources as improving gameplay would, as the assets already exist. They don't compress the textures then delete their original state.
Other long running MMOs improve their visuals, there's no reason FFXIV should be exempt because "They'll ask for it to happen again". Otherwise in 5 years the game's beauty will no longer be carried by its art style and start to look like ass. FFXIV doesn't have revolutionary gameplay, it does have exceptional art direction (with somewhat nice visuals) and music, and those are some key selling points in the reviews and first impressions I've seen.
And the reason people never suggest new people play FFXI is because of the dated everything that was never updated, while other MMOs that updated UI, visuals, and all that got upgrades over the years and are still suggested and incredibly popular to this day (WoW here, and MHFrontier in Japan). But FFXIV has a different director, and Yoshida's plan is 10+ years so hopefully he does what needs to be done.
Colorful gets it. PCs allow you downgrade the visual settings very easily, many games come with both HD graphics & standard. FFXIV is theoretically anything but taxing graphically, *however* the engine & way it is implemented means that it taxes hardware it shouldn't. I was going to give a car analogy but realised that most Americans don't drive manuals.
Right now the game has graphics proven to have been directly imported from previous PS3 FF games. Importing is usually far less optimised than building a model from scratch for a new system. Ironically, better quality tends to use less resources! Just look at Windows 10, it runs on PCs far less powerful than 8.0 required, heck, it even runs on phones that could barely load 8.1 (which had to be significantly cut down to run at all).
TLDR: A graphics update, done properly, will probably run better on your low to mid tier hardware than the current low quality does as it will be more optimised.
They really should do it make better graphics options (textures and such). In comparison, Bungie originally made Destiny for PS3 and XBOX 360 but created a totally new revamped graphics system for PS4 and XBONE to improve the graphics and playability and it really shows. Also texture size doesn't really do anything to frame rate it just increases memory usage which even cheap and integrated cards have 2+ GB.
PS3 limits the growth of this game not only the graphics btw you can make amazing ai battles due to the ps3 you cant have bigger maps draw distance and all cause of ps3, ps3 cannot use hq textures without lag. The size of maps and zones are limited and probably the new hw maps are that absolute max sized maps a ps3 could ever handle. the house item counts ps3 limitations too and far more things.
Sure this is an online game but your console needs to be able to do all this stuff.
To all the people who defends the ps3 compatibility and complains about not hard enough or not enough things to do your just being silly hypocrites cause your console cant do more things....
for ffxiv to survive it has to move forward or we will just jump ship to some of the amazing new looking mmos coming out like black desert.
and also sorry but there aren't many mmorpgs that actually play on ps3 anymore at all and why is that? reread above^^^
Actually, you could. All of that is usually scaleable to the user's pleasing, but SE is a Japanese developer and they're usually not up to speed on the PC configuration and the like. Honestly, why can't I make it so I can't see mobs from halfway across the map? My PC is more than capable. Would make hunting easier too.
PS3 could handle larger maps if they decided to make LoDs look like shit, but they're seemingly not willing to dedicate resources to have each platform look as great as it can, but we're going with that argument then PS4 and every low-mid end PC is holding back high end rigs. The only thing PS3 would be holding back is absurdly massive bosses (think Raviente) as LoD scaling would look awful on a monster, physics based gameplay, or user interface modifications that would give the other platforms an edge over the PS3. Still, those things are massive. I wonder, does the texture quality actually improve from PS3/PS4 to PC or is there just better texture filtering? If it's the latter it would explain the shitty texture quality.
on the subject I will repost this once again.
All PC users try this
https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/preset/4260/
edit McFX.cfg and change the line
from : #define USE_AMBIENTOCCLUSION 1
to: #define USE_AMBIENTOCCLUSION 0
save exit unless you actually like that menu transparency thing I've course.
then

set it up something like

Could even go 128X but the higher you go the more fps you lose I have a stable 65 to 70 with these before it was like 110.
and then enjoy the improvement :)
compare that to the console versions and there's a difference of night and day just on a shader mod...
But ps3 limitations also affect the ps4 cause I think ps3 could easily have shaders like that.
well, the bottom line is 4K resolution is PRACTICALLY MEANINGLESS without HD texture, and if we think LQ texture needs to be abolished, we need to make bigger noises. It's doesn't really need that much resource to fix if I am not mistaken, therefore it's just the priority needs to be raised.
I liked 1.0 for everything other than monster sizes but they fixed that shortly after i stopped playing i think.
That not a fair argument. They purposefully locked it to the PS2 well past that consoles life time because it was made for the PS2 and "ported" to PC a year or two laiter. Everything "graphic" wise was limited by that. They only announced last summer they were finally shutting it down except for the PC. Right now the entire game can be overhauled and have its entire engine finally updated. The user base is no longer there and they are only making enough money off the legacy players to keep it in maintenance mode until they get bored and move on. Basically its an eternal PS2 title, great at its time but a complete fluke that it even succeeded at all.
Aside from the failed launch, they already showed enough common sense to not repeat XI's mistakes for a better long term lifespan. Otherwise players could not migrate from the PS2# to PS4, and eventually PS4 will reach its max. If the game is still running then, they may have a migration from Ps4 to Ps5. While PC users need to upgrade hardware. If anything a playable game is more important than a pretty one. They will likely HQ the fonts, skins and textures back up when the time is right.
In the discussions I've had with the AMD team they think that the graphics related issues in FFXIV are (mainly) due to the implementation of Nvidia optimised features rather than using either cross-platform versions of them or implementing both the AMD & Nvidia versions & having it switch between the two.
Unfortunately, the way the game engine works is that it doesn't allow the driver to manipulate the "raw data" in the same way as most games. If you force a particular type of anti aliasing in the driver, for example, the game still outputs the same poor AA so that the driver has nothing to work with. Basically it's poop in, poop out. The quality data just simply isn't there so it's not possible to force it to be displayed, sadly.
Even more annoying - if I disable the Nvidia optimised graphics option in HBAO it causes crashes!
They should do it like a free DLC for those who have he power to have upped graphics can download it, those using laptops and lower end PC can still play the LQ version without requiring the dlc. Many games on steam do HQ texture DLC are free addons.
Exactly, I think it was SkyRim that did that. They released without the HQ graphics but said it would come when ready, and it did. Ironically I never even played it. XD
It's something that SE should seriously give thought too, even if it's just for new contents & older stuff gets upgraded over time. I cannot believe that the original models & graphics are produced at low quality as in almost every field you produce a high quality original & scale it for release. The only problems would be with those PS2 imported models like the pugil (?) which is terrible to start with.
That really not true, it was developed simultaneously and planned to be released at same time even though they didn't come out at the same time it was pretty close. In Japan the PS2 version was released in May 2002 with the PC version being released that same year in November 2002. Now if talking about the NA release the PC version was the one that actually came out first with the PS2 version being released second.
