Veteran Reward: Third retainer

Would it be possible to get a third retainer allowance as a veteran reward? I have been playing since launch and I'm pretty full up with gear drops I would like to keep. I know more retainers are available on the mog station but I'm not interested in paying an additional monthly fee for virtual storage. Thanks for your consideration in advance.

Sure, its possible. Although, since they're making money buy selling a third retainer, I seriously doubt we'll ever get one for free.

That would actually be a pretty sweet reward vs. random gear sets that most people don't seem to want or use.

Better yet, slap it on to the expansion. Everyone needs more storage, as more items are being added with the additional content; not just players who have been here for years.

Not that I expect them to give us something they should be.

Many people have brought this up in previous threads saying we should have gotten our Third retainer when the expansion first released and I wholeheartedly agree with them.

I support this idea!!! It could be something along the lines off the 3 year reward, or something big like that, it would be very awesome.

I'd rather see them increase retainer capacity as a reward. The idea of people who are already leading the economy getting a boon over those struggling seems like it would do more damage than good.

This is a bad idea, we shouldnt have to wait over 1000 days to get a retainer we will propably need soon after hitting 50 in the game. We should just get a retainer from every expansion, or, or, give us access to other "chest" items like the crafted armoire or FC chest, I'm sure people wouldn't mind that much having to go to their homes/rooms if they needed to store extra items.

I'd exchange, delete and relinquish my right to use the Strife outfit forever if I could exchange that for 4-6 retainers for free.

It would have to be a high up reward though. perhaps it should be around the 1000 day mark. Especially considering they are making money by selling extra retainers.

They talked about this in the most recent live letter. Sure money probably has something to do with it, but their explanation made sense.

Storing items increases the amount of data your player character takes up. By default you are given a ton of space, more than most MMOs (I mean 2 retainers might not seem like a lot, but isn't that more than 300 items AND the armory too). All of those items you store take up space and increases not only the data stored, but effects data access, every time you start flipping through all your retainers it taxes the server load a little. If they gave like just one more retainer to everyone, then suddenly item usage goes up like 50%. I don't think people pay for retainers as much as people think. I know the people (like me) that like to mess around with market board might have one or two extra.

How badly do you need that first coil armor piece that you haven't glamoured to anything for 15months anyway? I dumped the lot of the stuff I out-leveled except a few key things I liked.

I wouldn't mind more space personally, but I remember my WoW bank never had as much as this game does with no extra retainers.

I'd be happy with a gobble bag quest for another 20 slots or so in our inventories <.<

they already said before HW dropped that they wouldn't give away an extra retainer literally because of server limitations :c (and then put another 2 that you could buy D: )

Server space... Servers are not free to run and the space on them is finite.

I'm also against selling them as an additional service for this reason as well.

If they are to ever consider this not paying for a in game advantage all functions aside from storage would need to be removed IMHO.

There's already an advantage we could pay for, those being additional retainers so it makes no difference (6 retainers is slightly crossing that pay to win line tbh, pay for gil at least). Regardless, it makes sense. The longer you've played the game, the more items you'd likely have gathered, no? I don't believe they should put it in the later veteran rewards though, what is it now, 2.5+ years. Put it around 150 days I guess.

I agree, but if given a choice between paying extra money for storage or getting that same storage as a side effect of the subscription I'm already paying, I choose the lesser of two evils.

I have one retainer set aside to save gear for two of my jobs (pld and mch!) and that retainer has no space left whatsoever and every patch adds at least 20-30 new items (again, just for those two jobs and none of the other eleven battle classes or gathering/crafting classes) that I want to hold onto. I'll take anything I can get to alleviate this storage problem.

They make MONEY selling more bank space.
They will NOT alleviate inventory clogging.

Mr. Yoshida's statement in regards to making Relic items and Beast tribe currencies actual currencies & Key items reflects that philosophy.

It's shitty design, but as long as people are desperate enough to shell out more money for space it will continue.

Imho it's retarded. Selling more space for RL-$ is okay in F2P titles but ridiculous for a subscription based game.

Unlink the glamor system from items. Take a look at Diablos Transmog system. Once you acquire a piece of armor, the outfit is enabled in your Projection database.

Since WoD WoW has A LOT more space due to the reagent bank, also it is ALOT easier in WoW to create alts for storing crafting stuff.
(To be fair: WoW's crafting has way less items and no HQ/NQ versions of them)

This is 2016 not 1996. Sever hardware isn't that limited anymore and there are A LOT of clever systems out there that could be modified.

I agree with the people saying a third retainer should have come with the expansion. Sadly, it didn't happen.
Ideally, I'd like everyone to get a third retainer in a future patch but if that's not going to happen, giving one as a veteran reward would be the next best option.

I think why they charging us is due to ff11 where you played $1 here you can make up to 8 on a server.

Anyway, in personally think instead of extra retainers we get a personal player bank much like the fc bank.

Also why not make wardrobe furniture useable and why not open the gear box w/e thing that we have in inn rooms why now open it to hold all our armor then have retainers more for miscellaneous items, and personal bank for materials

Honestly speaking I think getting new retainers every expansion would just cover the current problems with items.

I currently own 3 and 2 are filled with just glamour stuff. If they worked out a way I could get rid of the items themselves but still glamour them then there would be no need for additional retainers for expansions/veteran rewards.

Sadly though they are making money from selling retainers so im doubtful it will change any time soon

Try to be an omni-crafter with only two retainers and you will find out it's nearly impossible if you don't throw away all the unused gear you may want to keep for glamour purposes, even with 6 retainers I don't have enough space to hold everything I want and I definitely hate the space limitation...

I'm not happy to pay for more space but I'm also not willing to part with my hard-gotten gear sets so unless SE remakes the glamour system there's no way to overcome storage problems, I hate the Armory Chest, they force us to have only one gear set per job and I can't stand being forced to use only one appearance at a time.

I want glamours for every single occasion so SE better reworks the whole Armory Chest and the pitiful glamour system!...

I would be willing to fire my extra retainers to teach SE a lesson but will the rest of players do the same!?...

The space/server limitation/retainer problems suck and they will only get worse the more items they add.

Who you are fooling PPL? Only yourselfs. You better accept that glamour system IS designed with cash shop as sole target. All the token currencies as regular items all the baits for fishing all the mats for crafting, everthing is designed to force you towards shelling your money towards extra retainers. Inventory space is the VERY FIRST thing ppl are shelling money for in chash shops if such thing is in MMO. They gone away with ABSOLUTE minimum inventory space you are allowed for free since this subscription based so you can progress through game without hindrance if glamours doesnt concern you and craft bare minimum(i am such person). They will increasy armory with just one row in future to accomodate future jobs, that is what i predict, but it is all you EVER will get for free. I bet they will blatantly RENT extra armory space for cash in near future, and ppl will buy it, they will gob it up since they have been eased mentaly long before with current cash shop policies and assortment.

I would not mind if the proposed Veteran reward retainer only had storage functionality, or was only accessible from the inn room like the armoire if that would help server stress.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me this would simply alleviate storage issues. I don't need additional retainer venture or market board utility.

I feel like they should have given us at least one new retainer with the purchase of HW--perhaps even two. I'm a horrible packrat, so I still would have needed more than that (I currently pay for 4 additional ones and am about at the point where I need a 5th), but that would have likely been enough for most folks.

Doing that with every expansion seems like a fair thing to do to me.

A friend shared this with me a while back, so I thought I'd post it here.


Here's the Google Doc I originally saw the information, and here's a link to the other infographics.

With this in mind, it means that FFXIV has a total of 750 inventory slots. WoW has less than 500, GW2 and Rift have less than 600, and Wildstar has less than 200.

That being said, I have not played those other MMOs, and I'm not sure how their drops function. The problem with our current system is, in my opinion, not the amount of inventory space we have. It's the way our inventory is used. We have an in-depth crafting system that often requires us to create two or three items so that we can create an item that we need to create the item we want. We're building up tiers.

So, for example, so the item you want to make only requires three materials. Well, the secondary materials you need to create those three each require three other materials. Unfortunately, the tertiary materials you need to create those three materials are three each.

That's 13 slots needed to create just one Primary Material (with three Secondary Materials required, and each Secondary Material needing three Tertiary Materials). Multiply that by three and then require a slot for the item you want, and you'd need at least 40 slots to create a single desired item. And that's just assuming that each material is going by 3 items -- some go by two, others four, and others five.

Of course, you could always just discard/purchase the items as required, but once you hit endgame crafting, not all of those items are easy to come by. And certain basic materials always remain necessary no matter what level you are, so you'll always want them on hand.

I think an extra retainer as a reward would be brilliant, it would solve a lot of my problems!

SE's interpretation: "We need to take away all the free retainers and reduce inventory space by 50 slots."

Basically, there is no reason why they would want to shoot themselves in the foot by cutting back their profits. There is a reason why there are a crap ton of necessary items in this game but only a limited amount of storage. They know that people will have to pay a monthly fee for extra storage.

I know numerous people with 8-EIGHT-HACHI retainers atm. If I was SE I laugh at the idea and wouldn't do that if people are payin more on storage than their own subscription.

others games dont:

have "glamours" like in FFXIV (is stupid that we still need to use ranks in glamour), they have wardrobes that already know what gear u have unlocked.

u dont have 1 character for every classs...forcing u to have lots of armor , weapons...on 1 character.

the mats to create something are like 5-6 ingredients sometimes......in other games u need 2-3 materials....and since here u can level all the crafts....
(Gw2 inventory for crafting is awesome)

in the end this game is still 5 years behind in lots of QoL changes.... starting with glamour and crafting.

This would be my second favorite reward right after mounts.

Square Enix wouldn't do that as long as they can easily get money by making us buy it.
