I don't think so or at least theres none that I can recall.
There's the couple that opens up Wander's Palace HM.
The Wanderer's Palace NPCs (show up in the original to show off the big Tornberry, then later on giving you the HM quest. Also interracial.)
While not gay Haurchefant is essentially Bi as far as most players are concerned it seems, or atleast WoLsexual.
For the most part...there is no indication for most NPCs what their sexual orientation is, since that has no real bearing on the story. Yes, there is that NPC pair from the Wanderer's Palace HM side-story (who were, incidentally, prosecuted more because they were interracial than gay), and the two in the Whitebrim barracks. And yes, Haurcefaunt, who is most likely bi.
Its just not important. Unless its stated otherwise, any NPC could be any orientation; we just don't know, because it (usually) doesn't matter in the setting.
A male Lalafell NPC is in bed having naughty dreams about Raubahn.
The hairstylist seems pretty fruity to me -_o_-
I swear there was a thread about this before, but I can't find it now.
Off the top of my head, there was a female vendor for one of the events last year that talked about her betrothed (another lady), and there are two male knights in Whitebrim that exchange innuendo too. I don't have the exact phrasing in front of me but it was something about their spears...
What the heck is up with this "openly" nonsense? Seriously you are either gay or not gay or bi or strait... whatever floats your boat.... but seriously its 2015 if you are still hiding in the closet well you need go to one of those clubs to "open" up and just be you. Why be embarrassed? No reason to... if somebody doesn't like you because of your personal life oh well its not your problem its their problem and 90% of the time those are the people that are miserable and hating life.
So stop with this "openly" nonsense its like that saying "happens to be black" like its a accident or something its simply stupid to even talk that way. "openly" who even came up with that anyway you don't hear people say they are "openly straight" do you? "Why yes I happen to be Openly straight"....
I recall names badly but there for one are the male miqo'te/hyur couple in lanoscea at Bronze Lake near the aetheryte in the center and off beside a bench. I think the miqo'te has white hair.
It's the quest "Not Easy Being Green", I think its the Wanderer's Palace unlock but here is a pic of the couple they are openly part of the storyline dialog as a couple.
I recall others but cannot remember where. Its pretty cool and I hope they add more of course.
But yea skipping cutscene dialog is the best way to miss it lol check your innroom for The Long Journey book to re-watch previously viewed cutscenes.
For some reason, spoiler tags don't work for me so apologies..

Sexuality in Eorzea seems to be very open and a case of 'anything goes' - homosexual and bisexual characters are regarded pretty much the same way as heterosexual characters. The exception seems to be the two male adventurers connected to the Wanderer's Palace HM quest, who state that the miqo'te of the pair was thrown out of his tribe for being gay, although that might be simply because he wasn't interested in satisfying the females of the tribe as a nuhn (the Sunseekers having a very rigid breeding tradition) and not because he was specifically gay.
Speaking of the Sunseekers, during a level 30ish quest for the U Tribe at Forgotten Springs (where the player helps shoo away peeping toms leching at female miqo'te bathers in the oasis, if your character is female the miqo'te quest npc will actually flirt with the player, suggesting that she is a lesbian.
And of course, this isn't the first time in the game where a female player character has been propositioned by another female npc - players who started in Ul'dah in 1.0 experienced this within the first minute of starting the game! (although as she was clearly a prostitute I guess that doesn't really count, but the fact she's clearly disappointed that you are unable to afford her 'services' perhaps hints she might prefer women anyway):

And still on 1.0, if you selected a miqo'te Path Companion in 1.0 if you also played a female character she then basically spends 90% of the time making passes at or flirting openly with your character (although she also stated she was enjoying sleeping with men too, such as the 'male friend' whom she got the location of Moonspore Grove from, it's a long story - making her technically bisexual in any event):

And that says nothing about the Ceremony of Eternal Bonding where same sex ceremonies are regarded exactly the same as a male-female ceremony. Then there was the vendor for the 'Rising' event in 2014 (the girl who was dressed as Minfilia from 1.0), who stated if selected 'small talk' reveals her wife made her the outfit.
Really, Eorzea is a very open place when it comes to sexuality, perhaps more so than real life.
Oh OK thank you was just curious. The only thing that's a big nono is interracial correct.
Nope not specifically that.
Sometimes inter-special [different species like above] in the pics I posted.
Sometimes its classes like statuses or stations in society: rich debutant merchant's daughter dating a working class miner.
Broken betrothals and racial differences.
It is sometimes different tribes of same race or beast tribe with non beast tribe like: An Elezen with a primal deity or a dragon.
Or a non bandit leaving a village or society to live with a pack of outlaws or hunters over love interests.
-- it depends..sometimes its ignored all together.
The cat girl bathing in forgotten springs swings both way at the end of the quest if hat counts?
For interracial I believe that might be more of an Elezan thing (I'm pretty sure the other half of the WP couple was Elezan and specifically mentions that.)

A game forum isn't really an appropriate place to bring up a real world issue like this. In the context of the game world? Sure. Go ahead. But as for real world politics? No thanks.
Pence:
The term "openly gay" is a dumb term. It makes it sound like its some kind of disease. Being gay is not a disease its the they are and there is nothing wrong with that. I support gay rights even though "I happen to be Openly Straight" <--- see how that term doesn't make sense and it shouldn't. This is a forum and I can express how I feel about something and if someone takes offence oh well not my problem. Do people even think about the things that are being said to them?
It's nice of you to share your opinion, but what does that have to do with FFXIV or its lore? This is the lore forum, not tumblr or Reddit.
I completely agree with him, it's fine for discussion in a XIV context, but why bring real-world politics in a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with them?
Because it's possible to write a character that's not openly gay...? The OP was simply asking if there are openly gay characters.
And yes, you are correct - this IS a forum. A FFXIV lore forum. It's not your blog, your twitter, your tumblr or any of your various social media accounts. It's for discussion pertaining to FFXIV and its lore. Your personal opinions about the usage of 'openly gay' may be better directed towards....idk, JUB? No idea where...but that's a good start.
LOL what does "openly gay" have to do with FFXIV lore?
May I suggest you go to Saudi Arabia, Russia, Nigeria or some towns in the Southern USA, stand in a crowd and proclaim homosexuality. Then you will realise why some people are not openly gay.
That is, if you live long enough.
There's very valid reasons for people to keep their sexuality a matter for themselves and your entire post was disgustingly offensive, not to mention naive.
I pressed post before I got to the FFXIV bit.
In the game sexuality doesn't seem to be as important as duty or loyalty are. Therefore there are characters (already listed) who are "open" about their orientation. Most of the time though it's just to add flavour to the game as it bears little importance on the story. I'm sure if the story involved sexuality in some way then it would be a more obvious feature, for example, if all WoL were required to get married at some point then your choice of betrothed would be open.
I second the calls to drop the discussion about whether homosexual people should be 'openly' so or not. Unless you want the thread to be locked (or worse, deleted) due to the inevitable arguments that will follow, because for whatever reasons not everyone has the same freedom as others - especially on a forum with users in every corner of the planet.
Surely he's a Hyur. You're not wrong that Elezen society tends to be on the rigid side in some respects but I think that if anything the Miqo'te is the reason that the WP couple's romance is viewed negatively by wherever the pair came from, for the reasons previously posted. If it was a female/female couple, there probably wouldn't have been so many problems in this particular case since the cultural pressures would be different.
I personally think that the majority of people in Eorzea see no problem with same-sex relationships or teasing. The first time I visited Camp Dragonhead I was thoroughly delighted by the experience of meeting Haurchefant and his men ("Do not dare question our ways, unbeliever!" indeed - I wouldn't dream of it).
For reference though, not every Eorzean is open-minded when it comes to their own selves. As an example, we could quote the seasoned adventurer we scout for the Crystal Braves on the Rowena Splendor House's terasse. He was working for Haurchefant before and quite not appreciated the "special attention" our favorite Elezen had for his butt :p
Not that the advendurer is against Haurchefant's sexuality, but he'd rather not be the one receiving rhe favor ^^
Do apologize if this may gotten of hand I was only asking a simple question. Did not mean to offend anyone in anyway as a matter of fact I myself am homosexual but that is not important. I was just curious and didn't know this was going to happen
Because the question of societal norms around homosexuality in Eorzea is actually quite important. I remember a vibrant debate about if Eorzea would, in lore, support equal marriage when the Eternal Bonding system was announced. There were a lot of people who argued that same-sex marriage would be against the religion of the Twelve, others who pointed to the existence of 1.0 characters, et cetera. The way the game treats gay characters is an important part of figuring out the values of the society.
That's what ti has to do with the lore.
The in-game text sorta seems to support interracial couples having a hard time with the societies around them (the couples or their children) but not an issue with the couples themselves being worried about it.
For the life of me, I can't remember the respective collections, Fernehalwes has said at the Fanfest Lore panel and somewhere in the forums that it's largely racial culture issues that make interracial/crossbreeding a rarity. He made a point of it saying adventurers are far more accepting, the races have been constantly at war for the most part with each other.
Prime example of interracial pairings being bad is ishgard; he'll, a pretty major plot point involves that.
I do think, overall, how accepting it is of interracial or gay couples depends on the region/town/people. Some places have different traditions that are more "traditional" and others are more "progressive".
For miqote, due to them being so rare, gay males would be considered bad, just from a survival point of view. Females pairing with other females probably wouldn't, due to the same reason (only can get with males at certain times, so why not with other females to stave off frustration?) as long as they do have children when they can
This is probably the big one, in-universe. It's ironic in that male Miqo'te appeal mainly to gay males (/wave) and females who want to RP them with other male PCs.
Personally, I find the idea that the only two choices are "openly" gay and "closeted" to be itself rather ignorant, as if there's some flag that's supposed to mark you as "gay" to people you run into on the street and not having it means you're somehow in denial. Reality is slightly more complex, so it's safe to say Eorzea is the same way. Aside from a few baseless (and angsty!) head-canons, though, it's not the sort of thing that would have much impact on most plots even if they did mention it.
While not exactly what the OP was asking about. It can be at least inferred that the Xaela tribes below engage in same-sex relationships
Quote:
Borlaaq :A tribe of all women. While breeding with men from other tribes is allowed, if a male is born into the tribe, he is given up within a year of birth.
Buduga: An all-male tribe which only increases its ranks through battle and kidnapping.
maybe "Morgayne" :P
No, I can confirm it a "Brother in Arms" speach pattern. More teasing about who was showing off and "I could have done that/better if" kinda comments. Where as Minfilia definitely has dialog that could be romantically interpreted with Male PCs, no confirmation on female.
But unlike Lord H, Thancred doesn't openly hit on Male PCs, teasingly or otherwise.
On a fresh male character starting in Ul'dah he seems pretty chill with males, though I think he IS a bit flirty with female WoLs by the time we hit Ifrit that I'm not seeing with the male WoL.
Also off-topic, but you think the Ugund Xaela tribe would try and figure out a better path for the afterlife or something...
