I think I'm the only one with the false hope of getting new companions ingame. You can already ride different mounts while you have the chocobo summoned, so why not? It would be fun to have a humanoid companion or a moogle.

I want my Retainer as companion!
1.0 had the Path Companions which is actually closer to what you're after - their only problem was they were horribly underused (you could only use them in certain story battles, as they were designed specifically to allow non-combat classes to proceed through the storyline. In other words, the Path Companion did all the fighting for you.).
Of course, they also had actual personality and dialogue in cutscenes, dialogue which could... get rather steamy:

I would love more companions, as well as more control over them, either in the form of micromanagement, or configurable AI options. One of the best things about Guild Wars 1 was the hero system, and it would be cool to see something like it - with an original spin - in FFXIV.
I really would like having an option to have certain NPCs as party members for when you're not in a dungeon/instance. Particularly since a lot of the NPCs from across the different job and class quests tell you to ask them for help anytime you need it. It would be nice if we unlocked at least 1 NPC ally when we finish our level 30 class quest, and then another after our level 60 job quest. Make them take the slot of your chocobo when called upon, and to summon them we'd use a linkpearl to bring up an "ally" list. While I wouldn't mind if they didn't have any form of leveling system, it would be nice if they grew stronger the more often you used a particular one....

Edit: I heard talk a couple of LL's ago that such a system would be implemented later down the line. Where you can level up nps through your GC to help in quests. Atm I would love to have the Fat chocobo as my companion but they need to fix the AI. I'd say implement the "gambit" system in FFXII but maybe not so broken that you can level yourself up over night like many of us have done.
Ya i really really miss that companion system from 1.0. wish theyd bring that back. you had this person you had to select at the waking sands, and they would be a part of the storyline and stuff. That was fun.
Please no more, leveling up choco was too draining. I really don't want to have to level anything else to 20 when they earn 200 exp per kill.
If you're levelling to 20 by getting exp from kills then you're doing it wrong. Feeding at stables and weekly challenge logs is the way to go.
I'm sure it wouldn't be possible, but a wind-up "me" would be fun, a minion of yourself following behind.

Retainer companions sound cute. All I really want is the ability to feed my companion chocobo until he becomes a fat (companion) chocobo though. The ultimate war beast.
My hope is for a dragonet companion. Not for any XI-related reason (though I'm aware of the wyvern pet DRG has there), I just liked that Anyx Trine sidequest.
I would real love to have my DOW/DOM retainers as companions, maybe summonable in undersized party dungeons?

Sadly if retainers were companions youd have to buy more, because alot of people use both retainers as DoL to gather.
I find every level above 6 nice to have but not mandatory.
With Level 6 your Chocobo can learn Vita and 2 DMG Skills, which makes him a very nice Companion.
And I am a fan of content, that can't be done in days or weeks. I sometimes hate MMOs for giving out everything way to fast these days!
For some reason I want to say I remember in one of the live letters, don't know which one or I'd post the link, Yoshi P said something about being able to use our magitekarmor as a companion. Maybe I was just having a really good dream? I also remember them saying in one of the HW press Live Letters something about GC companions we could run 4 man dungeons with. Does anybody else remember hearing these things?
They can't even cope with 1 companion....please don't ask them to try and add more. =/
My path companion in 1.0 was a total jerk. I modeled one of my current retainers after him.
1000 times yes. I would *love* to take one (or more) of my retainers out into the field with me, as I do my Chocobo, but I would also like to take them to dungeons (premade or undersized party only).
Please SE, let's expand the retainers a bit more, they always complain that ventures are not real adventuring, so let us open their eyes a bit and take them on real adventures.
I love the idea, but they do need to fix the old companions first. I've had my Chocobo for a year and he's only rank 13. :x
It is really hard to find the time to level him because now that I'm leveling a DPS, I spend a lot of time in queue. When I do FATEs, I can't bring him out to help me without canceling my queue. Or when I'm in queue for PvP (which can sometimes take nearly an hour), I can't summon him in a full party... and it cancels queue (unless they changed it in 3.1? I haven't tried because I'm scared of canceling my 45min long queues, lol D: ).
The EXP the Chocobo gets from mobs is really sad, I can be getting near 1,000 EXP and he'll be getting less than 200 and his level numbers are nearly as high as mine. :x

+1 for retainer companion if they get the same personality texts like the 1.0 path companions depending on race and gender.
I'd love to have retainers as companions! It was kind of a silly novelty feature, but I really enjoyed my NPC adventuring companion back in XI. I'd love to see something like that here in XIV.
I'd love for you to be able to have retainers as companions, but in addition I'd like to either be able to unlock job crystals for them, or at least give them some of the post 50 abilities. I'm not really sure how they'd justify that lore wise as some of the jobs are pretty exclusive. Maybe you could take them on as your "apprentice"? I'd also like it they expanded the companion controls, if a full gambit system is not possible then at least give them something like the pet commands already in game.
