Is it possible for FFXI & FFXIV to merge?

I was just thinking is it technologically possible to merge FFXI and FFXIV together. Story-wise it would be a simple matter, like Emptiness beginning to bleed into Eorzea connecting it to Vana'diel or something kinda like the thing that links Kingdom Hearts worlds together. What do you think? If it was possible would you want it? What hurdles would have to be overcome?

Look, FF11 had its heyday, but it's an entirely different game, an entirely different story, different mechanics, items etc.

why do ppl want to resurrect FFXI so bad?
If SE though this was a good idea they would have done something about it about 1 to 2 years ago to get around the PS2 dev kit issue
I wish ppl stop beating a dead horse and move on.

only thing worth rescuing is maybe a few NPC's (Prishe, Lion, Iroha, Arciela, Lilisette)

FFXI is built on the PS2's dev environment, a major reason they are moving away from continuing updates on it and to just maintenance/QoL changes only after this month's conclusion. It's also built on an engine that was originally designed for single player console games.

Bringing together the technologies is not feasible. They've mentioned in a Q&A that even if FFXI was still as popular at its peak, even though they would have the money to justify continuing it, the dev environment would still be a problem.

The differences are too great. It would fail miserably, and we do not want another 1.0-type disaster.

If they could revamp the world into a ffxiv esque style, or even just allows us to keep some items and equipment into that world I'd be down for it. Thinking the worse of cases (1.0) is just a bit shallow imo. Besides, the devs are showing promise with what they are giving us now. If they could bring xiv to justice, hell, throw xi into the batch and go to town on it. Worst thing that could happen is people will have more stuff to do. :/

XIV would ruin XI. XI has always been so much more detailed and in depth, and the world feels more alive (to me). XIV is the dumbed-down cousin, and it would do bad things. lol.

Just don't use FFXI engine, recreate maps using FFXIV's engine, start with the original FFXI areas and release additional areas thro patches and storyline. All that needs to be reported to FFXI's servers is character position and action data. Eventually completely phase out FFXI's engine even for FFXI players.

The two are connected with the Void, but they're different worlds with different mythologies and different rules. Altana and Promathia are the deities there, not Hydalaen, Zodiark, Midgardsormr, and the Twelve. Reconciling the two religions would require accepting one or the other as false, and within their respective universes, they are each very real.

There are some regrets I have regarding the development of XI - the failure to expand on the far east or open up the island of Tsahaya (although getting to Ulbulka was great) - but the truth is most of us won't visit more than one or two other continents in our whole lifetimes, so my character having visited 3 is already amazing enough.

Well, at that point what you're asking for is a remake.

IIRC SE (or rather one of their partner cos) actually is sort of remaking FFXI on mobile platforms, as well as making a spinoff.

I wouldn't want to merge FFXI and FFXIV any more than I'd want to merge ANY of the Final Fantasy games. They are all distinct, unique worlds (with a few common elements), and should stay separated.

If FFXI is to live again, it should be as a sequel game, not by shoehorning it into another game. And I don't actually think a sequel to FFXI is actually wise or necessary. The game had a good run, it's over, and for the time being it's still there for folks who want to enjoy it.

As if gods couldn't consult with one another and the fight between good and evil couldn't overcome boundaries of the universe. If Shantotto can break the barriers of worlds and come to take over our world (and we kick her butt) then whats to say the worlds couldn't coincide with rules and the like. Also who's saying that the worlds would be completely bound together? We could just open a rift for the warrior of light and a story driven npc who happened to find or unlock the route to this new world. Lore is hardly a problem, like ever. Allagans are still a story convenience. :/

It's common sense. Because it actually is a good game and people like it enough for not wanting SE to let it die. It has a market that it covers, as you can see from all the people that love the game. I also wish that people stopped jumping on the let's hate ffxi bandwagon and move on everytime a thread like this jumps in and let the people who care have their discussion.

With the exception of storyline NPCs half the enemies from 11 are already in 14... Skillchains would be nice, but people don't even do those in 11 now.

i would kill for FFXI with FFXIV engine, lessening some mechanics of course (traveling for example ) and the % drops , instancing some dungeons too to avoid overcamped NMs (argus) ,dragon's aery, and outside of that i can only say ....

No it can't happen for a miriad of reasons. This is only a science fiction scenario. Also FFXI concluded it's story and won't get any updates besides maintenance and bug fixes. It enters the stage of the living dead product. It will exist only as it makes some profit and it will close at some point in the far (but not that far) future.

Before 1.0 launched proper people had wondered the same thing. The answer then was that it simply wasn't possible. The games were too different to be compatible. We did get something of a nod to our old characters by assuring our names would be available... how they did it was stupid as heck, but I have to give them an A for effort. If it wasn't possible then, it's not going to be possible now.

That's just it though - SE has a name for Shantotto and Lightning (and Gilgamesh) - and everyone in Dissidia. They are Voidwalkers and their ability to travel between universes is canonical in their originating games. (Shantotto had a whole mini expansion dedicated to her misadventure with clones in the void.) FFXI also had its own parallel universe mini expansion set with Abyssea; Eorzea is not the parallel world to Vana'diel, Abyssea is.

But to go along with your argument... could they? Sure, they can shoehorn anything in and blame it on the Allagans.

Should they? No. Absolutely not. I stand by my answer. I played FFXI for ten years. Let my Tarutaru enjoy her retirement in the Mog Gardens of Adoulin already.

It would be entirely possible to throw a bit of XI in here, in multiple ways. One of course is a couple zones, maybe something akin to WotG XI expac, we see some of the world but not all of it. Another would be more nostalgia but still a possibility, to make a type of port of FF:Grandmasters as an arcade game to Gold Saucer. I don't see all of Vanadiel coming back even if they considered it, but its story is certainly not "dead."

Another chapter could easily open for it, and even the producer letter from last night hinted that it may not be over (could either be for XI proper or speaking technically of continuing the story on the mobile port someday, not grandmasters.) If they did throw XI areas into XIV though it would have to play by XIV's ruleset, which may not be all that bad but unsure if it would be what most people are looking for.

It's not possible.

The progression systems are so completely different that it's not in the least bit compatible. And we're not even talking about end-game progression here, just using any type of gear.
