So most probably thanks to Romans here on Earth, we refer to everything East of Ancient Rome as The Orient, hence Oriental.
At first, I thought the terminology was a bit out-of-place in Eorzea, and grudgingly suspended my disbelief slightly higher in order that the fantasy remain complete (yeah, looking at you Hollandaise Sauce).
But then it occurred to me that the Garlean Empire is heavily influenced by the Roman Empire, including the use of Latin. The opposite of 'Oriens' being 'Occidens' (West) being familiar nomenclature already.
So happily my immersion hasn't been ruined, as clearly Hydaelyn's Orient lies to the East of the Garlean Empire and hence these goods have come from there (plz insert Moose lore database character quotation below).
Of course that means that the Garleans regard Eorzea as one.. big.. occident! :cool:
Still not happy about that sauce though, which is clearly interdimensional in origin.

There will always be unavoidable cross contamination between the real world and any fictional world, particularly when the fictional places are rooted in real cultures (as is the case in FFXIV). A fictional world without any influence from ours would be so alien we wouldn't know what to make of it. I wouldn't worry too much about the sauce or references to The Orient.
That said, do we know the location of The Garlean Empire exact enough to know if your theory could be true? -

Well we know that the Garleans originate from the Ilsabard (Northeast of Aldenard / Eorzea) and we've been told that Othard is the eastern-most continent. A lot of the Garlean titles and names seem connected to Roman Empire or latin origins. If not Latin it's, taken from an Anonymoose post, "pre-Latin Proto-Indo-European"

In french, the "Hollandaise sauce" is named "Sauce Ishgardaise" (same in deutch).
It's named "hollandaise" in english and japanese though. -

Here's the known maps thusfar. It's a shame we don't see too much of the north, but we do see quite alot of the eastern continent (othard?) What's interesting is that the Northern Continent where Garleans and Sharlayans originate is called the "Old World" so I am guessing that Eaorzea is probably the youngest settled continent amongst the 3? (excluding the newly discovered western continent)

In various past threads, there has been little (if any) resistance to the idea that the continents can be though of in real-world parallels of Africa, Europe, and Asia. The real question is whether the landbridge attached to Aldenard is technically part of Ilsabard or Othard. Ilsabard's territory in the north might fade into "Asia" before the landbridge, or it might include it, separating "east" from "far east."Quote:

My assumption of an Aldenard > Ilsabard > Othard path was formed in 1.0, using basic 2010-11 press materials (which could easily have been simplified to claim that Othard was the Garlean Empire, since the Garlean Empire had already conquered it). These references led to a basic concept of the conquest, which I did my best to lay out in Rise & Fall. I claimed that Ilsabard was the "middle" of the three continents, that Aldenard lie to its "southwest", and that the Garleans conquered the "eastern continent" first. All of this passed (or, if you are correct, slipped through) SE's fact check, with the only request being that I refrain from saying the totality of Othard was conquered (sure enough, we now know that a few strategically worthless coastal cities remain free because the Empire doesn't think they're worth the resources to claim or the time to manage).
Since then, my assumption simply never changed. It even seemed supported by the constant references to Othard as the "far eastern continent". Why specify far if it's right over the landbridge, right? To separate it from the Near Eastern island of Thavnair, I suppose.
Anybody have official references that are specific enough to be sure? Again, save for that one claim of "west" in the FFWiki, all of our mental maps seem to agree save for to which continent the landbridge specifically belongs, lol.I mean, the Garlean path sure makes sense if the land bridge is Othard - they had a linear path from North to South. Yet I can't remember anything specifying that the Garlean assault on Eorzea was itself launched from Othard... Frustrating.

At this point, if Othard -was- that landmass references as "The Garlean Empire" then Ilsabard is not represented at all in any of the maps and is not seen.
