Don't even bother >.>
I do this sometimes by switching around some gear. The most important thing to remember is to equip an axe or lance in your main hand.
Hah!
For realz tho,
There's nothing wrong with equipping a bunch of Attack+, Dex+, or + crit materia; a bladed lantern shield; and chomping down on some meat instead of bread, all while using a Invigorate -> Light Stab -> Heavy Stab -> Heavy Slash -> Riot blade to start with, maybe with a Raging Strike thrown in as well.
I quite often out-damage supposed DD's in my party with such a setup.
What kind of damage are you pulling with it to make that claim? Victimize II, Chaos Thrust, Simian Thrash, Doomspike II and Storm's Path all do silly damage. Mind you, Victimize II is on a 60sec cooldown, but Keen Flurry fixes that easy. And doesn't Riot Blade lock weaponskills for 30seconds? That's a fairly long time to go without being able to execute another weaponskill unless the damage is absurd. Is there even another weaponskill that's viable to use? The others seem kinda eh.Quote:

You should probably look at it more like a "Oh well if we have a MRD spamming Storm's Path then I'm gonna DD." rather than a "I'm gonna try to out DD the other DoW!"
Gear choices shouldn't be too difficult though. You should basically play off your strengths and go from there. Like you can add +ATK or +ACC to your hand slot but there's no reason to add the +ACC materia if you aren't missing.
lol.............
Um, I don't think it does. You just have zero TP after using it.Quote:

Spinstroke II is great when the mob is attacking someone else. Luminous spire is magic-based and never misses (At least, I've never once had it miss). Some people are into Onion cut, but it's always been Meh for me.Quote:

It is true that pretty much any other class who knows what they are doing will out-DOT a GLA, but perhaps unsurprisingly, many of these players are either lazy or don't know what they are doing... it's also a matter of two different things:
1, timing. The tank gets to smack the mob quite a bit on tough mobs before everyone else joins in. That damage counts to the overall total...
2, you don't have to let up, ever. Ever. Taking hate isn't a problem!
All I know is that in parties in beastman strongholds, I shouldn't be able to pull hate when I'm set up for DD and there are other DD's in the party, and I'm not using any enimity skills or Intimidation... yet it happens all the time. That means I'm out-damaging them in some way.
Or being cured more...
Pff, nobody cures each other in the Beastman stronghold.
I toss cures in strongholds when needed... though I only have access to Cure II. Raise is always in my bar too...
You kinda just proved my point.Quote:

My normal hits were doing 30 - 40 dmg.
I guess I never noticed the 20-second debuff, because Riot Blade draws your TP down to zero, and I usually spam my tp-gaining abilities in order to get Riot Blade popped off really quick. By the time you have 1k TP back, there's only a second or two left until you can fire off anyway.Quote:

The question wasn't, 'does a GLA make a great DD?' The answer to that question is clearly no, other classes are better suited for it. The question was:
This is a good question, because quite often you will end up in parties with another tank (I was fighting in a PT with a MRD the other night and I could. not. keep. hate, without popping every single hate skill constantly. Turns out he had +enimity materia ><) and there's just no need for you to keep your main setup. That being the case, you ought to at least have a backup plan available.Quote:

Cons for GLA DD:
- Not that much DMG compared to other DD classes.
- Has to rely on buffs (Raging Strike, Invigorate etc) to keep up.
Pros for GLA DD:
- You can go full-out, constantly, without worrying about the mob starting to attack you much
- You can turn into a backup tank easily to give your main a rest
- You can extra-tank add-ons or links easily
- You can mitigate dmg and take care of yourself, mages don't need to worry about ya pretty much ever.
GLA doesn't make the ideal DD and against top-level players, you're not going to out-damage them. But that doesn't mean you can't still do great dmg and contribute to the group, with the right setup.
Hell, if you had a different set of armor, with the right materia on it, I bet you really COULD do a lot of dmg... I'll have to look into that.
You COULD do a lot of dmg, but not compared to everyone else who will be doing A LOT MORE dmg.
Every class has its limitations, this is one of Gladiators. Also, for the people complaining about pacification effect, you can just contagion it onto your target (we've known this for a long time).
Yes, but you're missing the point of the OP's question completely :/Quote:

Not only that, but not every other player is skillful at their job or on their game all the time; it's not my experience that other classes consistently do a LOT more damage than GLA, if you are properly set up and on your game.
I'll answer the OP directly then:
Who has a decent DD gear set up to switch to occasionally when not needed as a tank?
I do!
What gear are you using?
Ifrit's Blade
Canopus Shield
Cobalt Chain Coif (Red) (Materia: MP+28)
Cobalt Haubergeon (Red) (Materia: Crit Atk Power +24)
Cobalt Mitt Gauntlets (Materia: Atk Power +12)
Felt Trousers (Red) (Materia: STR/VIT+7)
Cobalt Sollerets (Red) (Materia: HP+40)
Penance
Dated Mythril Choker
STR/Acc rings situational
How are you faring against other classes?
Poorly as my linkshell is well-geared and they know how to play their classes.
The only reason I even brought up other stuff is because he specifically asked about how they are faring against other classes. It's one thing to be like "Oh well we have a tank and I'm bringing GLA so I wanna know how I can DD." but it's different to want to compare your damage to other classes who have skills specifically around dealing damage.
Anyway, I overlooked Contagion but according to:
It doesn't matter anyway.Quote:

Really the only thing that will give you a noticeable damage boost is weapon damage.
I have a decent setup for dd when not main tanking. It's my Archer.
