Totally invisible mount except for the icon. When you're on land, it just looks like you're running really fast. In air, make the character hover or something.

Or a pair of winged boots. Hermes style. Run as fast as a mount with them on, and fly with them as well. Of course the flying would have to not look ridiculous, wouldnt be hard though.
