To All the DPS I've Run With

Hello,

I am a tank. I'm not the best tank out there, but I like to think I'm okay. But there are times when I mess up. Maybe I'll pull the boss too soon and lock you out. Maybe I'll face the trash the wrong way, or let your AoE get the better of my enmity. Maybe I'll rush headlong into a fight when you don't know how it works yet, assuming you do. Maybe I'll skip a few mobs when you wanted a full clear for the EXP. Or maybe I'm not pulling fast enough for your tastes. But these are all simple mistakes.

But there are times when I'm ugly. There are times when I'll let my humanity get the better of me. I may snark at you, snap, or chew you out over something tiny. I may take an honest mistake personally and make you regret it. My ego may become damaged by a simple request, and I may get on my high horse and make you want to stop playing the game. When this happens, I am toxic. And I know I am, and I hate when this happens.

I hate it because I've had people like you tell me it's okay to not be great. I've had people like you tell me that I'm doing a good job, because we're getting through the content. I've seen people like you do amazing things, and work mechanics for dungeons, trials, and raids in ways that I've never seen to incredible effect. I've seen brilliant people who inspire me to be a better player, and who make me love the community here, despite my poorer nature that gets the better of me.

So, to you DPS whom I have scorned, I am sorry.

To you DPS whom I may have berated for pulling the wrong mobs, I am sorry.

To you DPS whom I let die by not helping you understand the fight, or by not pulling that one mob back off you, I am sorry.

To you DPS whom I have disappointed, through word, action, silence, or inaction, I am sorry.

To you DPS whom I snapped at for a bruised ego, I am sorry.

We tanks are proud; often too proud, and most often, you are the ones who suffer for it. Thank you for your patience, and thank you for making this game great.

Not really? I just felt that as a tank, I have a great propensity toward being a jerk in group content, and it happens more than I'd like to admit (and I know I'm not the only tank this happens to). No one needs that; no one deserves that. So I wanted to offer an apology, one that hopefully other tanks out there can agree with, because it's not worth ruining someone else's day to satiate our egos.

When I'm playing a tank, I feel more like a slave to people... maybe it's just me. -,-

It's just you. I have both contempt and pity for DPS. It's like I'm a Spanish conquistador and they are a bunch of savages who know not the light of civilization.

Oh, tanks can be toxic too? That's new to me o.O
I've seen dps berate tanks and healers, I've seen healers flipping out over dps and tanks, dps going at each other..but tanks were always just kind of..there, either getting yelled at or not participating in the conversation at all.
Interesting to hear that there are rare examples who are different :x

This is almost exactly how my friends describe me lol. "I swear you only bring DPS to laugh at them and healers because you think we're swooning over your awesomeness."

I'm a NIN main, and while it took some time to develop a thick skin, I no longer let people make me feel like crap. As a NIN, I just need tanks to understand one thing:

If I pull, I'm not being a jerk. If the group is ready, I'll ONLY pull after I hit you with Shadewalker. In case you don't know what Shadewalker does, it sends all my enmity to whoever I used it on. Since I hit the tank with it, all it takes is for me to hit the enemy once, and it's running straight to the tank as long as Shadewalker is active.

That said, when a tank get upset, it's because the tank is oblivious to what is going on also.

Yeah, I'm a quiet tank. I MAY get chatty before we enter the instance. After that, it's usually one-word responses.

to be fair, I do those two on a daily basis. You pull ? KK, you tank.

I have my pace, and I keep all the mobs I take. If you want that extra one, you go and take it, alone. Not my problem. Next time maybe you'll ask me to pull more and I'll be happy to oblige if the rest of the group feels like it.
