A question on servers

Good morning,

I'm mulling over the idea of transferring servers and I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I've heard good things about several and want to know what people's opinions are on the higher population servers. I'm not interested in Savage so the high end raiding scene isn't a concern. I'm just looking for a server that's active. Where Proto Ultima spawns and there's enough people interested to beat him. Where finding a group via PF isn't impossible. In general I'm leaning toward Gilgamesh, but have very little real information.

I can only speak for Hyperion, which is one of the larger populated servers, but I would imagine all of the higher pop servers will give you what you want. There's a couple PF groups up even in the dead of night, I find.
Unless you know someone from a specific server, or want to do role playing, there doesn't seem to be much difference between these particular servers, I gather.

Balmung is a great server and one of the most populated, but a setback I've ran into personally in being in one of the highest populated servers is character creation is always closed. Thx cana, I get why it isn't for ppl that transfer because they have to pay to do that. But I'd really suggest Balmung, been here since the merge and love it. It is the role playing server, that's a difference between other high pop severs.

Server transfers aren't restricted like making a new character is, last I checked. So that shouldn't be concerning.

Gilgamesh is very overpriced and filled with 'elitist' players, lot's of trolls too. I've been playing here for the past 2 years and I will be actually transferring out of here at the end of the month. Although Gilgamesh is one of the top 3 most populated servers in the west, it isn't actually that active, compared to other servers like Chocobo (JP) which has less players. It's mainly for RP and end game content, that's what most people in Gilga do. Besides the overly extravagant MB prices...

Personally, Gilga is a love/hate for me. While I generally dislike how it's become now, there are still a lot of friendly good players here, bunch of cool dudes and gals. I will surely miss the community... including the trolls.

One thing, PF is a mess here... farm groups wipes as much as clear groups;;

Balmung is overrated. . . . .

Excalibur.
Lamia.
Malboro.

Been to all three. They are pretty populated, especially Excalibur.

Excalibur
Hyperion
Balmung (Only if you like Roleplaying.)


It's hard to go wrong with servers that have Character Creation locked 99% of the time. Excalibur and Hyperion have been at server capacity since launch. Keep in mind this also means limited resources are harder to obtain such as Housing, rare Crafting Mats, Reservations (ie. Wedding), and things like Hunts tend to die before you even get close.


However, it also matters where you live and what time of day you play. As Excalibur's party finder is completely full at 5pm EST and completely empty at 5am. Not much use to someone with a night owl lifestyle.

From what I know of Gigglemesh is that it is one of the "unofficial" role playing NA servers (the other being Balmung) and MrHappy and Towelliee both have at least one character on that server.

Now Leviathan is pretty active, for awhile it was restricted from new characters being created (even when the site said it was open). And we have our own Alienware-obsessed fan. Though there are a couple of other trolls. But I don't recall their names because they're not important.

Thank you for the insights regarding Gilgamesh. I'll check out Excalibur and Leviathan.

I'll back up and add to what others have said on Excalibur.

Prices are getting better, and with a little bit of time put in, you can farm something that can easily make you a ton of money in no time to be caught up with at least the "mid class" folks, gil-wise.
There is constantly groups going. And even if it should happen to be empty on PF (happens rarely on Sun nights), you can post something and it WILL fill within the first posting time.
Huge amount of linkshells covering nearly everything in the game. Just shout in Idyllshire or Foundation for whatever you're looking for a linkshell of.
Lots of familiar faces in the major 'city' centres. I could probably drop about 5 random names I see here from Idyllshire right now, and probably anyone on the forums from Excal will recognize the names, just cause they're always online. XD
You can easily find an FC for practically anything in just a shout or ad on the PF. So don't fret about being alone when you get here for long. :D
