Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn was a reboot to the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy XV while people are waiting for has lost a lot of steam and its missing the open world online multiplayer that is a must have for modern rpgs. Final Fantasy XIV fits in this era becasue of the multplayer always online element. Players create there own character pick there job and do the main scenario. With this model developers can extend the scenario through patchs and do another main scenario with a big dlc while players run dungeons, craft and do rp content like chocobo raising, chocobo racing and golden saucer.
Look at Destiny on what they did with the firsts person shooter both Call of Duty Black Ops III and Rainbow Six Seige are open world online multiplayer with single player campaign and scenarios to compete or GTA Online which another multoplayer online with missions.
The only genre with a single player narative will be survival horrors while others will strugle to recoup their investment. Game like Final Fantasy XV will be lucky break 2 million.

Sorry, but I really don't subscribe to your view that offline RPGs are a dieing breed.
I'm admitedly not very excited about FFXV, but that's because of it's battle system. -

I'd have to say it's second or third Renaissance. It's first was back on the NES when all games had was the writing, and was it ever good writing. I remember purposely dieing to the last boss of Dragon Quest IV just to see if there was another ending (there wasn't), you were just that invested in their story as you were your own. I want to say there was another wave of great writing during the Great Console Wars of the 80s-90s as Sega and Nintendo tried to one-up eachother with first-party and third party exclusives. Game companies are beginning to realize that the FPS style game isn't the be-all-end-all genre... not that it ever was.

Online multiplayer, for many games, almost seems to stem from insecurity on the developer's part. Think of how many games have a tacked-on multiplayer mode, something that has a very short shelf-life because it wasn't the main reason why people bought the game. It exists as a bullet point to justify the purchase, to extend gameplay past the core game, but many times it ends up being the weakest component. That's all you'd get by putting it in Final Fantasy XV.
These games are built as an offline experience that people would rather not rely on other people to enjoy. We have MMORPGs for that; we don't need it everywhere. -

SE's game decisions are story driven. Tanaka said they knew as soon as they started developing the story that eventually became FFXIV 1.0, it would have to be an online game for them go take it in the direction that they wanted. (I interpret that as Derplander being such a generic boring character that you could slap literally anyone in that role - so they started plugging in different classes into the WoL slot and sure enough, it didn't have to be Derplander the Archer. Too bad the rest of the game development was plagued by bad decisions. )
In the case of XV, the story is heavily driven by one character's circumstances - Noctis existed before XV separated from XIII. XV is his story. Everything that happens in the universe of XV happens to him, or because of him. Making it into an online RPG wouldn't make any sense, especially since it's basically Neo Tokyo in a parallel universe.
X was Tidus's story. XII was Van's story (no really it was Balthier's story with Van slapped in there because reasons.) XI was the only one built from the ground up as an MMO before they started developing the story. -

The vast majority of "modern rpg's" do not have open world online play, at most a small number may have some random tacked on online element.
Let's take a look at some of the largest RPG franchises.
- Final Fantasy. Only XI (asides from 14) really had this and it was also an MMO.
- Elder Scrolls. Again, only one that had this was an MMO.
- Mass Effect. Did not have this. Had some pvp-lite and that weird tracking of progress in 3.
- Witcher. Did not have this.
- Tales series. Did not have this.
- Kingdom Hearts. Did not have this.
- Dragon Age. Did not have this.
I could keep going but I think you get the point.
So,I don't know where you get that having open world online play is a standard of the modern RPG and that any game without it is doomed to fail.
RPG's are doing quite well and have imo gained in popularity as well as branched out and evolved, as well as have influenced other genres greatly in the past decade. -

Single player games will be around until gaming dies
In single player games, devs are not as limited in what they do, they can do more with an engine and gameplay mechanics, they don't have to worry about class balance, they can create more epic cinematic cutscenes (rather than cutscenes with our character where we just stand there and react wordlessly), they can give us overpowered abilities and not have to worry about how it will interact with other players, among many other things.
Compare the gameplay of FFXIV with any single player RPG. You'll notice a difference in gamplay quality.
The MMORPG market won't be taking anything over any time soon. -
