Are dragoons mandatory? Does mch work with 2 casters and a melee (no drg)? Do brds /mch do decent dmg without a drg present? Is dual casters and a brd end game viable? Is 3 melee end game viable? Is war necessary if your party doesn't include a ninja? Thanks in advance for the advice.

No but they might as well be, they contribute the most of any DPS if you include Disembowel and Litany.

It'd strictly be worse than having a BRD, really bad. Not recommended.

Definitely the lowest of all classes by default by a small margin without a DRG but not so low you would omit them from your group. You still want/need a TP/MP battery.

Sure but worse than 2 melee 1 ranged 1 caster. Not much worse though, casters can do a decent amount of personal DPS with a BRD but considering they don't buff anyone but themselves it's not fantastic total raid DPS.
- Is 3 melee end game viable?
During progression, never. During farm, it depends on the fight, some fights just aren't designed with that many people huddled around a boss mechanically, some are actually quite kind towards as many melee as you want. This raid tier, it's actually a solid comp for A3 and A4 and I think some groups will start using NIN DRG MNK MCH once they've got alts geared, my group included.

WAR's necessary period. Groups using DRK + PLD are gimping themselves. That said if you just straight up will not bring a WAR ... yes, you must bring a NIN, or you will lose a whole lot of DPS.
I don't have one. I'm not raid-ready nor will I push to get into it. For fun after it's nerfed, maybe. But right now, nah!
My group is basically the most unoptimized it can be due to having to replace a member (lost our WAR right when we started learning A2S). It's DRK/PLD/NIN/MCH/BLM/SMN/AST/SCH. We are starting on A3S. We're aware of the unoptimization, but our group is more casual so we don't push for people to switch jobs unless they want to.
Tanks: DK + WAR
Healers: WHM + SCH
DPS: MNK + DRG + BLM + BRD
Progress: A4S cleared.
Our monk should use a ninja instead their actual job because trick attack, goad, smoke bomb and shadewalker, improve the utility than mnk and our dk puts INT debuff on enemy.
Prolly 3.2 he would change with EU servers.
Thnx for the replys you guys, it really helps, having party comp issues on my team, hopefully we can get it resolved soon, dps is not there despite being decent players.

We cleared A1S and doing well on learning A2S but our bard decided to take a break because school started so we are stuck. xD

We have cleared A4 Savage.
Dragoons are not mandatory but they do help with earlier clears, I think we would have cleared a week or two sooner if we had that extra 150 ish dps that they add to ranged due to all those 3-4% wipes.
Composition is definitely a thing, ut if you don't mind early clrears you can take whatever classes you want.

This far in the game, with the gear we have available, party composition shouldn't be what's holding your progress back, to be honest. Maybe the players are not as decent as you think they are.
How fast are you looking to clear content? cause that's the important part...
There really isn't a huge difference between different compositions (within reason ofc), and while that could be the difference between world first and world second kill maybe, it matters less and less with every week after the patch.
For A1-A4 Savage, the composition doesn't really matter anymore. With the gear you should have now, the relatively small differences in DPS, are not gonna mean anything if you play your job the right way. Of course, if you struggle with getting the most out of your parties jobs, then going for a more optimized setup is gonna help. It's not gonna magically be miles better though or anything.

I'm a MNK main that swapped to DRG for the sake of raid progress. I value early clears, and although I put myself 5 weeks behind in terms of esoterics (i200 weapon + chest piece for monk) it was still beneficial to swap. Although when I get another gobdip through A4S pages I plan to upgrade MNK weapon, so I'd probably be allowed to switch back and forth. At this point, like others have mentioned, gear can make up a lot of the difference in group comps. If people are playing well, it should be no problem.
My group setup was PLD, WAR, DRG, BRD, NIN, BLM, SCH, AST. But a lot of them have stopped playing until November so we never got passed A2 as a group.
I like the setup cause there's a lot of synergy in the group, WAR buffs NIN and PLD, DRG buffs BRD and everyone with litany, BRD buffs BLM and NIN and SCH and AST work well together.
They used to like to all time their buffs together, the SCH would use fey wind, the AST would use enhanced arrow or balance on the BLM, the BRD would battle voice foe requiem, the DRG would litany and the BLM would pop raging strikes enochain and ley lines with an INT pot. BLM pulled off insane damage in the duration of those buffs.
Tanks are WAR and PLD
Damage dealers are BRD, SMN, BLM and MNK (myself)
Healers are SCH and AST. Or were, our AST had to leave due to work.
We're still at A1S, mostly because of our gear and relatively stupid mistakes.

Progress: Just starting A4S. Can't really progress on it due to gear checks but we're still having trouble with A3S though as evident by our run yesterday, lol. Honestly, I'd say your composition doesn't matter unless you're going for world first.

We're on final phase of A3S, the "stuck" point for most average raid groups. Motivation is our biggest gimp, I think...our first pull is really good then the rest just go downhill all night because we're tired of wiping to it. Composition doesn't matter ATM, though I'm gearing MCH cuz we'll prolly need one for A4S (our healers are great with MP, never needed a support up to now, but dat mana drain mechanic doe).
