Am I doing something wrong or is there somewhere...better for me??

So, I only started playing FFXIV about...7 months ago. I was also almost completely new to MMOs, so it's been a slight struggle trying to pick up on all the lingo and general basics proper CD usage and trash pulls (I had to google those to figure out what they meant)

Anywho...i've come along way but trust, after 7 months i'm hardly a vet. BUT, i've got a LV54 iLVL121 SCH now with almost every other class at 50. I'VE PUT WORK IN.

Uhh...getting to my point. After all this time, running DF and playing this game i still get made to feel like a chump when i'm trying to learn something new. People already seem to be over early HW stuff and I just got there!!! ALL of the main story quests that I used DF for were painful as I either missed the story to try and catch up or missed the fight altogether.

I'm totally venting here and i'm not expecting anyone to sugarcoat anything but....ugh where are the people who just enjoy the game, and are NICE. Can't people play well AND be nice???

I've considered changing worlds to maybe one that's a little newer but i'm not even sure where to begin.

I am going to assume that the story you've used DF for were the two imperial dungeons, Castrum Meridianum and Praetorium, right?

They have been admitted by Square-Enix to be a bad mistake, and no more dungeons have been or will be made with tons of lengthy cutscenes in the middle.

The thing is, people have been through those dungeons literally dozens if not hundreds of times. They hold nothing new, they hold nothing of value, the ONLY reason old players still do them is because they get a special max-level reward for doing so. The faster they get through, the faster they get their reward.

My advice right now would be to finish leveling to 60. For better or worse, MMORPGs have a tendency to live by three simple words: "Endgame is king." Endgame, that is max level, is where the raids, the challenges, the interesting gear is. You have some time; the next content patch is set to be released in November, and will contain what is likely to be an 'easy' entry-level raid that will give you a taste of big group content.

Changing servers (unless to a new data centre) wont help you with DF problems, since when you que in DF you are matched with people across any server on that data center.

My advice? Take it at a comfortable pace, if someone gets upset, tough.
Youll find good people and bad people anywhere you go.

This right here is really it there are good and bad in every world. Just never let the bad get you down and go look around towns and such ^^ your bound to find some random fun loving ppl just having a good time;)

Weeeell personally I did the HW story asap because I wanted to know what happened..
but yes in dungeons I always wait for people because I know not everyone is speedy like I am. ESPECIALLY since I love the story and I want other to experience it the way it was meant to.. (Honestly I don't get it..speed through a dungeon and be bored again? Erokwhateverfloatsyourboat).

Non-spoiler hint, the only in-dungeon cutscene is about three minutes long. Let people wait for you, especially as a scholar they can't finish without you so...

If that still stresses you out a bit, grab one or two friends for the story stuff.
If that still doesn't work come to Lich I'll run stuff with you, hehe.

Simple fact of the matter is that while there are plenty of good people out there in FFXIV, most of them are going in with groups of friends rather than relying purely on DF groups. The only real advice I can give you is to have a thick skin when dealing with the random people out there who want to rush everything and complain about every little thing that goes wrong or that they don't like. Other than that, try joining a good Free Company that feels the same way about the game as you do......

I've been playing since about the same time as you, (started in early February), and never had an MMO hold my interest for long prior to XIV. On the other hand, I consider myself more of a Vet than half the people out there who've been playing MMOs or even XIV in general longer, because most of them only play the game to experience one aspect of it such as DPSing or Raids, and will only look at other content as "a means to an end". I'm by no means an "actual vet", but I find that often times I'm explaining simple concepts to players with a lot more play time than me, just because I took the time to learn it while they bypassed it because it wasn't relevant to them at the time. To me, someone who is a veteran of something isn't just "experienced", but is someone who knows how to put that experience to use....

I'm feeling the support guys! Thanks for all the good advice. And I shouldn't of left out some of the cool people I have come across in this game. I had made my original post fresh out of a DF so that might of been a little motivation for my rant :x

I've almost solely relied on DF for clearing dungeongs, trials, etc. So i've run into my fair share of goods and bads but...it's more of the "i'm gonna finish this dungeon with or without you" mentality that's been getting to me. I'm all for moving light speed in everyone is fine with the pace....i won't however, leave anyone behind.

You start to see how this game has sort of a rhythm with content and when people are playing what. Maybe when the next expansion comes out and I can learn everything at the same time as everyone else it'll be a little different.

You guys are all rad...I really appreciate the tips :D

This, more or less. It's even worse if you're going into DF as a healer or tank, because anything that kinda sorts goes somewhat wrong is automatically your fault.

I visited Brynhildr when trying to decide what server to transfer to. They seemed like nice enough people, and I even got a tell from someone asking me to let them know if I did decide to transfer there. Try making friends on the server or inviting your friends into the game rather than relying on the duty finder. You never know what type of person you'll get in the duty finder, but it's notorious for being a dreadful place for newcomers.

If you do decide to transfer, Adamantoise is a really nice place. I transferred there from a smaller server and have no regrets. Immediately saw random server-wide RP events, received expensive items for free during the Moonfaire Event, and many people gathered to honor a player that died on the server. I'm not going to lie and say that it's perfect. but I've made a point of putting all my new characters there.

That might have been the reason I stopped using PLD as my main. I'll go back in with a fresh outlook and see if I can't make nice with some people who want to me run new things (new for me at least)

Yeah tanking I feel is the most "stressful" job in the DF.
Honestly I won't go in DF by myself as tank unless I really, really need to.

Sadly it is unlikely to work like this.

I've been in many MMOs and the pattern repeats every time.

There's always a beta, closed or open, and people always get a massive guide ready and... either break the NDA and post it, or post it the moment the NDA is lifted.

- Even if they post that massive guide the day AFTER the expansion goes live... by the time people hit that content, even if that very same day, you will see folks getting booted out of groups for not knowing the content already. Sometimes even if a guide has not been posted - if you're a tank you can get booted for not having learned it during the closed beta you didn't even have access to...

Its actually BETTER right now than it tends to be around the time when expansions launch in MMOs. New expansions and young MMOs bring all the worst-attitude players back into active play... where they zerg stuff like crazy, find and exploit glitches, exploit bugs in trading systems, and pay a LOT to RMT sellers... fueling a lot of account hacking, accusations, and flame wars...

I've been booted out of groups before for refusing to use TOS-violating exploits. In fact in Guild Wars 2 such booting is the norm anytime someone finds such an exploit...
- and the people who have that kind of motive, are most active around launch time of new content...

Right now is the time you want to find a nice friendly guild, and start building up a long term friendship with them, so that when all the really amazingly nasty players come back next major release of something... you can play with your buddies and ignore it all.

The worst thing you can do for your morale, is to be stuck guildless (free-company-less) and friendless in a new or old MMO around launch time of new content. That is a very quick path to burnout and bad vibes.

Start friending people now... and insulate yourself. :)

I highly recommend Party Finder to put together your own party from time to time to clear content you need. I'm always happy to lend my axe to help someone get a clear. I'll even defend your right to watch cutscenes. I've organized an entire party so that a new player could watch the entirety of Castrum and Praetorium without being forced to skip.

Work through the story line at a pace that makes you comfortable. Many of the folk who are impatient in instances are trying to complete gearing up for end-game content. They're bored and frustrated that the rush to get to end-game means there's no more content for them until the next patch.

Look for a Free Company to join. Being able to chat with others in-game can make your game go more smoothly, as you'll have all levels of experience on which you can draw. Running instances with FC members can also be a lot of fun. Ask for tips, find study guides in the forums, look at videos for help in getting better at your class/job. [Also realize that videos of class/job rotations from a year ago are probably only accurate until you hit level 50, then look for newer videos].

Try out other classes and jobs in-game as well. You may find Scholar suits you perfectly, you may find you really like the playstyle of Bard or Dragoon (or Warrior, or ...) even better.

This feeeeells slightly like therapy for me but it's really helping my perception of this game. From all your comments, everyone seems to understand the general pros and cons of mmos and have learned to ride them out and enjoy the game regardless. What Makeda said about new content bringing old bitterish players back was something i ran into a lot and am maybe still seeing.

I love this game and almost every role to play...even gathering and crafting. I need to put my big boy pants on and stand my ground more often. 7 months may not make me a vet but i'm confident I know what i'm doing...unless i'm learning new stuff then I might want some friendly faces around

And there are a lot of us who mostly do stuff through the DF. Just need to be lucky to get us lol.

When the good, nice players get too many bad players who "play the way I want" and go out of their way to underperform, they eventually go for the "find someone competent" and run almost everything with them.

It doesn't help with said bad players also asking people who play right to stay out of the df or "get used to it".

What we end up with is a df with a larger pool of bad players who also have a short fuse as they are starting to lose their carries, especially if someone is new and still learning.

The only advice I can give you, OP, is to make some friends/join an fc that will run content with you instead of relying solely on DF. Otherwise, build up tolerance against whiners/haters but definitely always seek to improve yourself so you don't end up as the "bad player".

A friendly face is always nice to have, but you also need to try not to read the chat with a bias of tone. There are plenty of times where people try to give advice kindly, but come off as condescending to the person learning because of word choice. And if the new person responds negatively to the advice, nice guy won't be so nice anymore.

Thats why doing stuff with your FC is always the best route.

Deebs15, I know it's not the same thing as watching them "live", but you know that in any of your inn rooms you can open the book and watch all the cutscenes your character was in, right? Including the dungeon ones. All of them. :)
However, they made much shorter dungeon scenes lately.

Gonna give a brief look into how things are done now and why they are different from before, as far as perspective of being new or learning and how it's handled goes. Back in the day (over a decade ago), there was no such thing as cross-server dungeons, nor was there such a thing as solo queue... for the most part. The games were developed under the pretense that people will form relationships with each other under a minimal mutual ground of wanting to do content or help each other. Be friendly and help one another to (essentially) build up your own potential army of friends to play the game with and experience content, including massive raids. No one wanted to group with the renowned ninja looter of the server, or a player with horrible attitude, so they were often very restricted on what they can and can't do... for obviously good reason. The tech was certainly a huge reason why that was the extent of being able to experience content, but it became part of the MMORPG identity. New players meant potentially more friends to make (building up that army). So long as said newbie wasn't a d-bag, most folks weren't going to be mean to them. Even the GMs and devs were usually quick to respond to inappropriate behavior, be it cheating or harassment, and dish out proper punishments. Some of which were humorous to the innocent, as you could clearly tell they were just trolling the wrongdoers or actually out to actively harm their play experience.

Fast-forward to today and things have changed. These days, you can be however you want to be without much consequence, save for the serious harassment or threats bit. While it's obviously not approved of with this game, cheating really doesn't have much risk here. Not referring to practically harmless parsers, but rather botting and hacking. Just ask any of the countless number of the legit players who had bot their way to 60 on multiple/all jobs with no repercussions, despite reports and video evidence. We're essentially allowed to be a lot more wild than before, but that's more of a different topic.

The devs today still hold to the making friends bit of the old. They simply have the tech now to make it easier/possible to do things solo, in terms of giving you a means to access content. This, along with how people view their games, gives folks the illusion that the game is all about themselves and their experience alone. So when you venture into that territory, you're going to inevitably meet mouthbreathers like that. Heck, it's definitely something you'd encounter to a lesser extent even outside it. As many people can attest to, statics tend to breed drama sooner or later. The important thing to remember though is that they are, by ratio, but a small part of the whole. With the fact these games are far more popular now than they were a decade ago, the actual numbers have increased, but ratio is still relatively low.

TL;DR - You're not doing anything wrong. Most complainers are just... THAT type of person. That kid in the class that no one likes, probably because he/she is of mind to think they're better than everyone else.

Yea just take it easy while u catch up. I'd also say when u do primals or whatever maybe try to get people who are all new to the fight so u can make mistakes and get better together. May make some new in-game friends that way or at least build rapport with people for tackling other content that comes out in the future
