"Newbie" question

So I've finally gotten some crafters to 50 and I'm looking at making materials for my master books, but I was just wondering if this was working as intended.

I have CRP at 294 craftsmanship making Spruce Lumber (difficulty 97) and I can effectively complete it in one step with Careful Synth II.

I have ALC at 297 craftsmanship making Growth Formula Delta (also difficulty 97) but Careful Synth II only gives me 48 progress, meaning I have to CSII three times in order to complete the recipe. It screws up my rotation at the moment, and while I don't have the craftsmanship required to make the actual master book items yet, I'm worried that I won't HQ them whatsoever.

Is this intended? Am I supposed to be gaining less than half the value of progress on ALC than I am on CRP? Is difficulty even factored into progress?

I think you made a mistake with CRP at 294 one step it with CS II. It takes 324 Craftsmanship to one step it with CS II. And that will explain why your ALC cannot one shot it.

What my concern is, from all available statistics of the items, they're essentially the same step. They're both the item you need to make in order to make the Master book items, both difficulty 97 with same craftsmanship requirements, and yet there's such a huge disparity between the progress gains I get.

I'm noticing now that my CRP is 51 and my ALC is 50-- is one level really what's breaking the calculations behind the scenes in order to make this go so smoothly on CRP, but make me work so freakin' hard on ALC?

That's it exactly.

In post-Heavensward Eorzea, recipe difficulty is ordered like this:
L50 --- your ALC
L50 1-Star
L50 2-Star == L51 or so, your CRP
L50 3-Star
L50 4-Star == L53

So in ALC you were doing a recipe that is higher level than the class, and in CRP you were doing a recipe lower level than the class. It makes a huge difference here, because a 1 Star recipe is effectively 5 levels higher than a no-star.

One solution: go do a GC turn-in and a few leves and get to 51 on your ALC.

You said "finally gotten some crafters to 50" on your first post, so I thought you had CRP at 50.

Silverbane's right. Your CRP is level 51. You probably underestimated how much that means. Every level beyond level 50 is a gigantic step for ARR 1 star to 4 star recipes. Level 53 Heavensward recipe is the same difficulty as ARR 4 star recipe. By the time you reach level 53/54, you can easily 4 shot a 4 Star recipe with CS II.

Silverbane's solution is the best. 1 or 2 GC turn-in (especially with gold star) will let you easily reach 51 on ALC. Then problem resolved.

Actually, as I said above, level 53 = 4 star. So L51 is actually below 4 star.

An important thing to note is that 1 level in Heavensward is effectively 10-15 levels in A Realm Reborn (or at least that's how big of a wall it feels like, especially when you're trying to do a level 51 craft at 50, but it's as hard or harder than a level 50 3-star craft); this makes every level above 50 that much more important to attain in reducing the difficulty of previous crafts.

Yea, every time when you try to do a recipe above your own level, the progress penalty is quite a lot.

I just confirmed that ARR 3 star recipe is actually BETWEEN LVL 51 and LVL 52 Recipes:
Lvl 51 recipe - 421 difficulty (or 339 difficulty for some)
3 star recipe - 445 difficulty
Lvl 52 recipe - 503 difficulty

So this means, if some new crafters (without ARR BiS gear) wanna do ARR 3 star items, it's better to wait till level 52 or above. Safest at level 53.

To be honest I didn't even notice CRP was 51 until I took those screens.

Sheesh. I thought I was broken. Now I just know that the calculation is. @_@

I know the "difficulty" aka progress required is a bit higher, but what about the quality/progress modifier when actually crafting? I was only doing this by feel when I was level 50, but it felt harder to do a level 51 item than a 3-star item because of the penalties imposed on you. Does the "difficulty" actually have any bearing on that? Would be interesting to see a "difficulty nullified per level" chart if that was the case :)

Well, since we are both wayyy passed those levels, we will probably need a fresh 50 to test that for us! :P
