That's actually a good question. Hopefully we'll find out on the upcoming Live Letter.
They couldn't be bothered to give us an OpenGL renderer, why would anyone expect a Metal renderer? If anything, it's on Transgaming/Nvidia to transition Cider to use Metal in lieu of OpenGL. I don't remember anything about Yoshida's message to OS X users that they were doing away Cider / actually give us a native client.
Did you read this a while ago?

Yes I did. My tone was hostile in my previous post. I am sorry.
It's just they were unwilling to invest in a proper renderer for OS X. That's what's upsetting.
That still says to me they aren't doing away with the Cider middleware. Yoshida went out of his way to not mention anything about the possibility of a native client. So, even if we do get a version that targets Metal, we'll still be dealing with the overhead of D3D to Metal. Maybe once El Capitan hits, we'll hear something.Quote:
As Kasuga has previously commented, the FFXIV team will be also be hard at work on updates for the Mac version, and will continue to push for the best performance possible. With the adoption of DirectX11 for Mac, and the replacement of OpenGL with a new graphics API in Apple’s next OS, the fundamental gap in current performance issues may soon be eliminated.
I just hope we hear something soon. Mac users are being kept in the dark for too long.
Hasn't it been a shit ton of problems with mac client also?
So, now that El Capitan is out, what's the veredict?
With the release of El Capitan it would be nice if Square at least gave us an update on the client. The silence has been deafening.
I upgraded to El Capitan today and now when I launch FFXIV it minimizes itself after I complete the login. I see active and running the cutscene video when I launch Mission Control but when I click on it, to make it the active window, it immediately minimizes again.
Well, as I expected: On my side nothing has improved. It's the same thing before and after.
Strange I don't get any problems like that. I finally upgraded to El Capitan, but I don't get any problems. It doesn't perform any better.
This is pretty much what i get:

I'm having some weird issues since upgrading to El Capitan as well. All windowed mode resolutions are way off, half pushed off the screen and the mouse doesn't visually line up with where the cursor is active in the game. It does work okay full screen, but feels more sluggish than before. And then I started having weird keyboard issues... like it was completely remapped and then not working and lagging really bad. The keyboard issue may be unrelated, but only happened after logging into the game, and hasn't recurred again since restarting after logging in.
Maybe there will only be a perfomance increase if they make an update that makes use of the Metal API?
open "~/Library/Application Support/FINAL FANTASY XIV/p_drive/User/My Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/FFXIV.cfg" in your text editor
Change in "<Display Settings>"
ScreenMode 0 to 1
(=Full screen mode)
Ya, that's what it will happen. They will need to update the game to use Metal. But so far, from what I've been reading, there are some mixed tests with Metal vs OpenGL. Metal winning some, OpenGL winning other benchmarks. We'll have to wait for Transgaming or SquareEnix to implement this. The gold master version of el capitan has been out for a while now. I just hope we hear something about this soon.
This is exactly what has happened to me too, and I have found nothing online that can help fix this. The text editor suggestion is useless to me at this point, my knowledge with my mac isn't as advanced as that and have no idea where to being with it. This is beyond frustrating!
El capitain has some teething problems, we can't upgrade at work as Archicad (cad software) has issues with it at the moment.
I can imagine Archicad having trouble on El Capitan due to the nature of the app itself. Not everyone can upgrade to El Capitan right away. But my guess is that SquareEnix and Transgaming are betting on the Metal API to get a better client for OSX.
Fun Fact: Transgaming removed the article about releaseing FF14 for Mac from their website.
We'll have to wait for SE to announce something. I just wish we had at least some vague info on the future of the OSX Client.
I called apple support and they walked me through a work around. The game was playing in a window that was actually off my screen. In system setting, change the display resolution to maximum. You can see 1/2 of the window and can drag it up your screen to reposition. Change the display setting back to default and it stays. I have to do this each time I launch the game.
Oh and it worked it i didn't set it to max, but just a little bigger.
Updates coming Tuesday in the 3.1 release include fixes for the Mac version.
[2.0] The following adjustments have been made to the Mac version:
The client is now compatible with Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
The default graphic settings in the System Configuration interface have been adjusted.
Adjustments have been made affect the performance of systems using the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M, GT 755M, and GT 750M graphics cards.
Game is still booting up off screen after 3.1 and zero improvements on framerates. In fact i felt that it ran worse.
anyone plan on posting their hardware specs?
I have 2 maxed out 5k iMacs, one is the newest version and both have always run fine not sure what is causing the stated issues with the Mac client and others who aren't?
Still plays horribly on Mac, and yes I have to rescale my resolution as well upon each client opening. Maxed out MacBook Pro retina. Blehhh thank god for bootcamp? SE never really does anything right the first time. Or the second time.lol
Looks like the window issue displaying offscreen should be fixed but it may require you to re-install the Mac Client.
I got a pop up this morning on my Mac client version to re-install. It looks like some more Mac improvements but some people may be instructed via the pop up first to re-install the Mac client:
Update Details
Reinstalling the client will address the following:
・ An issue wherein performance improvements were not being properly applied.
・ An issue related to system updates.
・ An issue wherein the top portion of the window would appear off-screen when using Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
・ An issue wherein the in-game Support Desk feature could not be used.
・ Multiple issues related to Japanese input.
I really hope they get this sorted out. I am a PC and Mac User, and wouldn't mind having this game run on my Mac, rather then bootcamp, etc. :)
After re-installing the client as instructed. I am seeing much better performance, frame rates, and no graphic ghost images appearing like I used to at times. I am pleased thus far with the update. More time will tell I am sure. But for the 1hour I've played, it is much better then it was previously.
Be ready for a long re-install and then update process. It took me several hours, but well worth it.
Played for several hours and the graphics problems seem to be all gone. Thank you SE!
This looks promising. I'm currently downloading the game client again. If all works better than before I'll be returning as a regular player to the game.
How did it go Reih?
I'm flabbergasted. Playing on a custom-built i7 Sandy Bridge Mac with AMD 6780 graphics - the game is gorgeous, smooth, and flawless. I don't know how they fixed it. I didn't think it was fixable. :O
Reading these update reviews is getting me excited- redownloading the updated client. Hopefully I'll be able to finally see how the game looks on max settings. Not holding my breath though.
