The crafting grind

I was in the process of making a set of 60 HQ gear for my Weaver. Lately i made the main hand and all i had left was the off hand. I did some math and i'm 115 crafting points short for 2 star. Even with an HQ offhand and the best food there is i'm not making it.

Turns out you need the blue gear to make the blue gear. My blue tool is 26 tokens which is a little over 1000 red scripts. A turn in is 19-33 with a minimum rating of 4000. Just the tool is not enough for 2 stars.

Then there is the mats. To make the Weaver blue tool, i need 2 star carpenter. 2 star carpenter, you would have guessed, requires over 1000 red scripts.

Did i mention mastercraft demimateria? Yeah need to level desynth past 100 to the new cap.


Crafting has been my whole game for months now. But i'm not up to this kind of grind. All this time was wasted.

So anyway, if a dev reads this, i'd like to ask you: how many people bothered to gear for 2 star?

Only way to get to 2 star crafting w/o getting the lv 60 blue gear is to have high-melded HQ lv 60 (white) gear. It is feasible, albeit quite expensive.

These mats and this gear is just not sold on my server. There is no history for it, it never was.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. It'll all get nerfed down in a few patches from now.

It is very much possible to craft the new gear and tools without any blue gear, I've made 3 things so far, all HQ. you do need to max meld your gear, and look around for rotations that fit your crafting style. There is a good discussion in the DoH section of the NA forums that has people discussing it. I would give it a look :) Good luck!

That's why I just melded out a HQ white set and use it on all my crafters. I'm really unhappy with the fact that they went back to every class having its own set of gear. I get that they wanted each class to have its own unique look, and I can appreciate that, but putting together a bunch of different sets is a PITA. It wouldn't have been so bad if you didn't have to meld them.

With no melds on my tools and no food, I'm at 718 craftsmanship, 681 control, and 393 CP.

Reasons why I stopped even leveling crafters with three to go (two to even start)...... it's overly convoluted, with ridiculous requirements, and there's really not much point to it at all. @_@

The crafted blue gear is pointless, not sure why your even worrying about it

I have an "almost" fully melded, crafted "white" set - 710 Craftsmanship, 698 Control, 391 CP. I'm doing red crafting scrips for the main hand and will craft off hand tools once I have finished getting red scrip main hands for my gatherers.

I see no point in actually doing anything beyond that. Hopefully, the next major upgrade to crafting gear will go back to a single, common set of gear that can be used across all classes.

How many script is a red script token? 40? 50? I would consider the grind if this amount was lower, but not right now.

I lvd up from lv50 to 60 ONLY with those daily quests NPC guilds give ;D + those Weekly crafter quests + those XP boosts incs every crafter gets x3 for free from job quest!

took me around 10 weeks and just 5-6mio gil (I didnt crafted those needed items, I bought them from NPC shops or Market Board)

Now I just wait till its easyer to get those tomes for master Books(law tomes for blue scrips 1:1? :x ). Because I dont waste precious mats for little results!

You craft the serpent (white set as you are calling it) set and make it HQ. Then make sure any craft you plan to really use has adamantite in both mh and oh. Those are not necessary melded pieces as you will want to replace the mh tool with the red script one right away. That is your goal. Once you get that done. your set for making end game goodies like the green and blue tools for gather and crafter.

1. Craft your hq Serpent set.
2. Meld the hell out of it to a point lol.
3. Craft you some stuff for red scripts and 3 weeks later you have enough to get the mh tool on one job.
4. Suggest BSM as you can make several oh tools with that job. (Not required just a suggestion)
5. Keep at this replacing your mh for each craft about every 3rd week.

Of course you can do this many ways but this way is the cheapest albeit maybe not the fastest.

Right now i did the melding with the regular slots with 3s and 4s. What quality would i need to overmeld?

The books are already ridiculously easy to get... o.O

I'm hoping that this gear stay main gear till 3.3-3.4 And every .x patch the scripts is doubled. per turn in.

I'd recommend at the very least just collecting the tokens. It's very likely that something will change if they decide to introduce 3-star, come 3.1. Now, maybe that might entail a lower cost in tokens for scrip gear or some form of a nerf to crafted. Maybe it will just mean that you'll have a better idea of prioritizing certain crafts at the time. Either way though, let's be honest here... practically none of us have any need for BiS or near it right now. If you have the patience, it's almost a guarantee that it'll be a win/win situation to just hold those red crafting scrips/tokens until the next craft-related update.

That was my plan. I'm really not interested in doing scrips or anything at this point. I just want to finish getting my crafters to 60, then go back to making obscene amounts of money off leveling gear.

Yep. I'm making stupid amounts of money just making and selling several different varieties of food. I have a friend that does a lot of the higher end crafting and I sell him a few of my red scrip tokens from time to time; other than that I just camp on them.

Crafting and Gathering was already stupid before Heavensward. Heavensward just made everything even more grindy:

- bloated recipees requiring a lot more materials.
- common recipees for leveling gear requiring mats from hidden and unspoiled nodes.
- even just doing GC daily deliveries now requires a lot more time because of the above. They double the amount of seals you get, but the effort to farm and synth the items has tripled or more.
- you spend most of your time chasing unspoiled nodes to get scrips, leaving you no free time to do anything else.
- monsters drop less materials and there's fewer of them to farm. This isn't that bad because of retainers, but on the other hand SE also screwed over daily GC deliveries.

I've barely logged in in the past month because gathering and crafting has become such a chore. The best thing about FFXIV that really set it apart from FFXI was the ease in making your own gear. That playstyle has been pretty much destroyed just to make greedy players happy and a MB with inflated prices.

And lets not even consider the poor planning that went into the recipees. One of the best things while leveling from 1 to 50 was being able to craft my own gear. In Heavensward, plenty of times you can't craft equipment for your level because the mats are locked behind higher level quests. It was just stupid.

Gathering and crafting should be a relaxing side-activity that you did to gear up your battle classes. Instead its become far more time-consuming than battle content. I play FFXIV to relax and have fun, but SE has turned it into a job. And I already have one of those to pay my bills.

I don't know what people expected. MMORPGs, on its face, are grindy. That's the core of how they are designed to make money via monthly subscription. If anyone expected anything different, they did themselves a disservice.

They had to give crafting and gathering an endgame to work towards. Otherwise, those who only focus on crafting/gathering would have no long term goal and no longer will keep playing the game.

Typically, if you find a game stressful, you should quit. That is not what a video game is supposed to be. As for me, I find grinding relaxing. It lets me turn my brain off, do other things, have a long term goal to work towards. In the end, you WILL either end up grinding or quitting, because once you complete the newest content, you now have to repeat it for a while. That is the basis of MMOs.

The problem is how the grind is presented. Some grinds are great, some grinds aren't, and people using 'MMOs are grindy' as an argument really need to realize that.

Yea I was surprised but excited that crafting was actually fairly difficult. you need a lot just to start getting scrips for both gatherer and crafter. If they make it super easy to make all the lvl 170 gear it would get boring really fast, not to mention you could just buy entire sets off the marketboard cheap and wouldn't need to craft at all. Which would defeat the point.

It depends on perspective there. I find all the grinds just fine, myself. As far as the weekly lockouts, that is purposeful. 3.0 is bare bones of Heavensward so they have them to extend current content and its lifespan. Once the content patches come out (3.1, 3.2, etc.), it'll be more flavorful.

Are they even looking at crafting for a future patch?

this grind killed crafting for me. I normally try to keep up with crafting and gathering but the token grind for more tokens is just redundant and boring to me. They could have made turn-ins more lore and fun related like carpenters need to turn in "..." to help fix some pillars in the Foundation. This obviously would have no effect on the world but doing something for people other than Rowena makes me feel like I'm making a difference. Right now all I feel is that she is a slave driver and is the npc equivalent to players who manipulate the MB on servers for gil.

From what we hear is that they are doing it on purpose! (Live Letter when he talks about droprate of pets)
SE is listening to the wrong players! Grinding isnt the problem, but lockouts are a pig part of it.
We have not only gear lockout, but also materia lockout and materials lockout including time lockout and even weather lockout... not to mention the weekly cap!
There are way too many restrictions for a SINGLE piece... Dont forget RNG and running around to find spots...

The problem with this logic is that if you make everything grindy to keep the players that only want to do one thing, you end up losing the players that want to do multiple kinds of content.

FFXIV was a lot more fun for me before they added all this grind crap to DoL and DoH.

I can understand crafting is endgame and is meant to last a long while. But the amount of effort is not raisonnable and could not have possibly been tested. And i mean the whole thing, crafting a set of hq, leveling to 60, crafting every single red script turn ins over 3 weeks for one item AND the 5900 rating turnin.

They have no idea what's happening with crafting and with 3.1, there will be little to no reason to level 2 star crafting. (new raids, better items, nothing for crafting.)

I understand your frustrated but I'm pretty sure they were not intending people to make all the 2star items within the first 2 months of the expansion. I'm not sure about your server but on Behemoth all the 1star gear you can buy off MB for 100K HQ. So about 1M for the whole HQ set. If they made 2star crafting easy like 1star crafting you would literally ding 60 and be fully equipped in 2star gear. And there would be nothing for you to craft because you would already own it. Not to mention you wouldn't make money because the market would be oversaturated.

I think for the people that actually have enough patience, the crafting system is actually really good. Best ive seen in any video game or MMO.

My advice would be to just take it slow. Don't burn yourself out and you'll get all the items you want eventually.

It's not fun. Leveling crafting and all. Because of that i am forced to adopt a behavior i don't like and "play the game the right way" meaning farm raids.

For whom they design the system?
Look at Blizzards Diablo3 and the MB system, they had to completely delete it because its not working! Point.
Why not having a system for the players? What is wrong to gather for yourself and craft for yourself, why we are forced to use MB in the first place?
Good Luck to try and do all on your own (becomes interesting if you go deeper with the desynth system)

I never bothered, the max Materia melds weres to expensive anyway. With 3.0 I did both miner and botanist to get full sets to wear to make gathering easier. Right now I've bought most of my lv 52~55 craft gear and lucked out crafting some HQ mythrite tools. I probably can do crafts above 1 star now , but I need a better rotation for HQ. If you had the blue gear the climb would have been easier to craft HQ for lv +52. Right now the only thing to really work for aside from scripts, are the master craft recipes . Eitherway if the lv 51 ~60 Crafting quests are anything like Gathering's. You'd get gear and some of the tools to start you off. Although due to the limitation of mistletoe and tea leaves, among others. Its cheaper to buy Holy gear sets from the vender than AH Even the HQ is a bit overpriced due to the time investment on some ingredients. (you'll more likely outgrow it before you can convert or desynth it)

Check out Kalifas Artexas crafting ideas, he mentioned in one of his posts about a couple of crafting games that would be fun, one of them was based off of Guy's grocery games, if you haven't seen that show you definitely should to see what he's talking about. Doesn't necessarily have to be with just cooking. Anyways my fiance and I have been grinding all the crafts to 50 and the most tedious thing I've noticed is farming farming farming crystals(shards) like 3 days in a row for me at a time. Also as you get higher you have to go out and farm this and farm that etc.... But with the GP it goes down real quick and takes forever to fill back up. When I need to use actions to help with crafting and then i'm waiting very slowly for it to regain again that is tedious in itself.

I think is a bad idea involving red scrips to make 2stars lvl60 gear. Because the grind is collosal and you are only limited to some per week. Something that not even artisan stuff went thru!

Blue scrip should be part of making high lvl gear and not red scrips. If we looking for a quick solution.

The other solution is to make reset red scrips daily. Like ixali quests for ehcanti stuff. So that MB can flow. Right now is a right nightmare if you ask me.

They should also probably just replace Byregot's Brow with Byregot's Blessing across every class and give Carpenters something different. Making Reclaim baseline would help a ton, too. Having to pump out an extra 5-10 collectables every week because Hasty Touch decided to give you the finger five times in a row and you didn't have Reclaim isn't a good deal, to be honest. It'd make it easier for someone to just pick up a single crafting class and go after red scrips without having to do so much leveling for other crafting classes.
