So, was curious why so many people play or use alts. I play quite a bit and have hard enough time taking care of my main character lol.

Make 6 alts, put them in 1 FC, put your main character's chocobo in the stable, train your chocobo 7 times an hour.
This is what my friend does with his alts. I don't really know what else.
I have an alt...she is on Balmung since I wanted to check out the RP community. Honestly I powerleveled her just recently so she could get all those sweet summer items. Now I'm just playing through the MSQ every once in a while when I don't have anything particularly pressing to do on my main.
Gear up multiple jobs with capped tomestones faster (& more flexibility for raid group as a result)
I'm considering making an alt, to try out other servers/re-live the story and for aesthetics/rp
You cannot do this. You get one feed for the chocobo's owner and one feed from any other character. These two may have independent cooldowns, but there are only two.
And to answer the OP, for hardcore raiders, they use alts to clear current content multiple times for loot lockouts and/or tomestone lockout.
My alt was because I liked playing with another raid group, but didn't want to drop the one I was already in. Now I don't raid anymore, but I feel obligated to play both for some reason.
Mistakes were made.
Multiple chars mean multiple weekly caps and lockouts, Why only have 1 char with full Esoteric gear in X amount of time, when you can have 8 characters with full esoterics in the SAME amount of time? Lots of overhead i know but i know there are a handful of players that do this with 2-3 chars on one account. Also prevents boredom.
Unless it's been changed. Your chocobo can only be trained a maximum of twice per hour, once by you, and once by someone else.
Source: My FC had a regiment of keeping all FC chocobos double fed around the clock, by growing/purchasing mass krakka roots. And they could only be fed maximum twice an hour. *has had an R20 chocobo for over 6 months now*
In my case it's because sometimes I come up with different ideas for characters I want to play as, and that may involve a different race, hairstyle and name. Stuff that can't be switched on-the-fly via gear sets.
There's also the scenario where you have friends playing on multiple servers, or when you're curious about how things are on other servers.
Different character concepts. Checking out other servers. Reliving the MSQ.
I made an alt on one server to talk/spend time with someone, that is growing on me fast...gotta be careful though, last time that happened, I got hurt -.-
I wanted an Au Ra but I don't want to switch my main to one since I felt like I would regret it.
Dual/tri-boxing fates off peak, when there are a fraction of the mobs with a fraction of the HP.
Makes levelling alt-classes on your main a synch, and farming 2.xx glamours a cakewalk.
some crafters will use alts as mules for extra inventory space
./To suffer
I have far too many alts ^^; In the beginning, it was because I liked playing with the character creation, and being an avid pen-and-paper RPer (plus some forum-based RPing) I made a couple of characters based on my RP characters. Of course, in the beginning me and my flatmate pretty much played this as a Co-op game, and we gathered all our alts into an FC to make it easier on us (and avoid random FC invites from strangers who didn't even talk to us first D: ). Then we met people we clicked with, who enticed us to move a pair of our alts into their FC, and.... then those alts managed to become our mains xD
We still log into our alts now and then to level them up or do some MSQ, though I admit that for me that happens mostly when there's an event going on ^^; My flatmate has gotten one other of those alts HW-ready, while I haven't.
And since I bought all the Fantasia potions possible when they were still account-wide, I now have a total of 11 Fantasias delivered whenever I make a new character... So I have two 'extras' that I only use to try out Fantasia combos on xD Once they run out of potions, I'll probably delete them and make a new one.
Anyway, that's my situation, but I've heard others who level and gear their alts up to endgame level, and then use those for raiding once their mains have reached the weekly cap on stuff. Which isn't a bad idea at all, considering the raid-loot lockout with "1-3 people done it before? one less chest. 4-7 people done it before? no chests" system.
Playing with a different aesthetic and replaying story quests vs FATE grinding is my reasoning. That said, usually if I find I like a class I'll dig into it on Gale. Gale, by far, gets most of my attention.
There are still 5 races.
I keep 3 characters, one for each role. I would have 5 but my server is locked against character creation.
I would ask how someone can be so limited as to be able to stand having no variety and play the same chatacter day after day... Because that has never made sense to me in any game.
Because Fantasia isn't something your local alchemist can produce nilly willy.
I love my Miqo'te, but sometimes, I want to be a Hyur. Or an Au Ra. On rare occasions when I'm angry even a Roe...for 5 minutes or so. So...I have such alts. I unfortunately can't equip them all with pretty glamours (Even when they reach the level, I'm poor and can barely afford a few glamour 'crystals' every now and again), but it's still nice to have them.
I have plenty of options for variety as is on a single character, multiple classes on one, glamour, hairstyles, etc. I'm honestly of the opposite mindset, I don't know how people can stand to play more than one. I find it difficult to get "attached" to more than one, not only that, but having alts is a chore in the game. Do the entire MSQ again? No thanks.
To each their own though, I never with more than one character at any single time in any game, singleplayer or multiplayer (unless it's something like Dota, LoL, HoTS or whatever else that requires it).
Why alts? Different Race + not having to do a ridiculously boring grind from 1-60 on an alt job on main...WTB ability to reset MSQ and/or side quests for alt jobs (even if the only reward is XP.)
I raised an alt due to inventory issues on my main. While it is possible to raise all jobs on a single character, the current inventory system makes this increasingly difficult the more jobs a character levels up. After a certain point, it becomes impossible without throwing out valuables.
I have 2 alts one "high level" that I first raised due to boredom (had all 50s) and later used to have a progressive raid and still be able to raid with friends. Atm she's a tad left behind but I started leveling her.
The other alt is on another server only level 25 on main... not in any rush only using him when I'm fed up with people on my server or just want to enjoy being a low level :)
I mostly agree with the OP.
But I have an alt because my wife and I both play female characters and there was an even what was gender locked needed male and female.
Also I have an alt just for RP
You can earn lot of gills selling alexander savage (or any content on lock) with alt while you still have your weekly loot for your main. Some HC FCs require to have alt for sells.
I made an alt back when coil first came out so I could help friends who weren't in my coil group but who also wanted to experience coil. It's still the better alternative to this loot lockout garbage square enix keeps foisting on us.
Now I have the two alts I use, and two more all in an fc together for inventory purposes.
I originally made an alt for Ixali Oaknots back when Artisan gears were a thing (and made a killing doing so). Nowadays I use it for Red Script turn-ins for gear mats (since scripts are capped weekly). Making and leveling an alt is definitely worth it in the long run, you can make a ton of gil.
I have 3 leveled up alts, and at one time or another they've been used for:
- retainer sale space
- retainer storage
- retainer ventures
- ixali oaknot farming
- red scrip farming
- gathering 4x grade 3 thanalan soil per game day
So I can feel I can have everything I want...
My main is a healer/crafter/gather and is the race Miqote which means she is a very busy lady. Now I didn't want to do everything on one character as to me her role is caster whether that be healing or magick but it didn't feel right to have her do tank too. So one day, I decided to start an alt which eventually became Au ri as well as be a warrior. She is also an alt which I can use when I feel I need to escape and just chill without the distractions of crafting & gathering. Now I do feel like I can have everything I want ^^
Because my former raid group required it. Now they and their FC has all but broken up and I've long since moved on, but I still keep capping every week on my alt. I had wanted to maybe move it to another server and find a weekend raid group for it, but most groups want to run Tuesdays right at reset and few want to be "the other woman".
TBH, I thought it was stupid of my old raid group to require it as it created more work for very little benefit. I guess the rationale was if the loot system remained like FCoB, you'd go in 4 mains and 4 alts to focus drops to the mains, but even still, it's just dumb and not worth the time and effort. SE fixed the loot system, and although it was fun back in 2.55 going from level 1 to complete ARR BiS in exactly 32 days (!), every time I look at that character on a Friday after my main is capped, then realize I have to cram all that in before reset, I groan. I've stopped doing Alex normal on the alt. Only has one job anyway. I'm starting to see a small gap in difference as my main has some raid gear, and the alt has to rely on Esoterics. On my main, I'm already planning on spending Esos on another job. Because the alt doesn't raid, it's nowhere near the point where I can just stop, despite it only having the one job. Left side's still not done and since it's a tank, double accessory sets.
So I'll be double capping every week for a while. Or until it just burns me out as a futile endeavor. Probably should just scrap it so my weekends can be about crafting like they used to.
If you are an endgame crafter/gatherer right now a good reason to have an alt is to supply yourself with the red gathering scrip favor materials so that your main doesn't have to sacrifice red scrip gear progression.
I have alts, one of each race because why not? Most of them aren't past level 5.
I do have a main alt as well that I'm getting to level 60. I have my main character, whom I do everything on first. Then once I got him to a point where it's just a grind for tomes I start bringing my alt up through the main story and whatnot, mainly just doing a roulette and story quests for the EXP.
I initially made this alt as a "mule", as we called them in FFXI, in order to hold the excess of items I obtain and act as another market seller. But we can't send mail to anyone not on our friends list. So I ended up using her to get the female versions of the seasonal and exclusive gears. In order to do that I needed her leveled decently (Lightning event needed at least level 45 for the body if I recall), and it just progressed from there.
I have 2 or 3 alts because I wanted to try different servers and can never stay content with where I'm at. I also didnt want to pay the transfer fees because I'm cheap :/
I created an alt just to see what a support class would be like (machinist). My main is tank and DPS and I didnt feel like leveling up a third class for them. Really hoping I love MCH to be able to slog through finding all the aether currents again (*groan*)
I have 2 alts. One on other server to talk with my NA XI friend there and 2nd on same server I mainly play for lols.
I've made alts on other servers just to see what the less populated ones are like. I've never levelled past 30 with them, though.
