A tribute to a hero [SPOILERS INSIDE]

!!! HEAVENSWARD SPOILERS !!!

You probably already know who I'm talking about, after hearing this song I thought about Haurchefant right away so I had to make this little tribute, I hope you'll like it ! :)

Wish this song was intended for someone like Haurchefant. It`s much more beautiful in this context.

It's fascinating isn't it? When I first ran into that NPC I didn't think much of him. I liked him fine but he didn't leave an impression....then I kept running into him. When he died I was like "BUT MY WARRIOR OF LIGHT NEVER GOT TO SAY 'I LOVE YOU'!" It didn't fully hit home for me until after the Singularity Reactor and I saw my character bring the broken shield to the monument.

Obviously the little tricks the game used to manipulate me into loving this character then mourning his death worked. I have to give the writers props on that, it's rare that a death in a game gets much of a reaction from me.

RIP, Haurchefant de Fortemps of the Silver Fuller. You were one of relatively few characters who made me laugh. You'll be missed.

I don't really understand the Haurchefant worship... As a female character, he fanboy'ed me from the first moment he appeared on screen, the way an irritating underclassman or an unwanted admirer might at school. He was overly personable, despite my character never reciprocating or even visibly accepting his behaviour, and then, when he died in a moment of forced cutscene mortality, I'm suddenly supposed to worship the ground he walked on?

Treading that line between MMO and RPG in an uncomfortable fashion.

Elsewhere...

You don't see this kind of worship for Ysayle...

Why is that?

The JP-version of Haurchefant supports this with:

For me it kinda felt he was just another harmless NPC, supporting you from the sidelines and lightening up the mood with his pompous manner of speech. He would always be there, harmless and innocent.

Until his passing, that's when you realize how much you've taken his presence for granted.

I don't really consider that valid for anyone but the independent parties, of which there are few. There aren't many in Eorzea who associate with the Path of Twelve/Circle/Scions without standing to gain considerably from doing so.

Totally wondering this as well, she is such a gem and honestly has a backstory that sounds so tragic and needs to be further explored. I loved her identity crisis in HW about trying to seperate her self from who she believes she has to be.

.........I hope she's not done with yet, she doesn't have to reappear...but I want more details.

Indeed. I don't want her trivialized into another Auntie Aerith, who pops up just when you were finally getting over how sick to the back teeth you are of her... But at the same time, I do desperately want to know more about her.

It's nice to see such strong supporting cast members in this expansion. Sure, both she and Estinien are troped to hell, but they're well realized archetypes, and their stories play out enjoyably, even if they are predictable.

More of this, and less bland nobodies, ala the Mor Dhona era.

A few possible reasons

-Lord Haurchefant has been around for as long as Realm Reborn has. Ysayle popped up late into 2.x and we didn't really learn anything about her until Heavensward.
-While Ysayle is certainly an ally, and a true and valuable one, the way the game threw us back at Dragonhead after major moments of plot-related trauma set Haurchefant up as a good friend to our player character...if not a potential lover, in some versions of the game. In English it takes more reading between the lines (but, yes, he is just as fond of your character if your character is male)
-Ysayle died running interference so we could get into Azys Lla. She rode in on a dragon, turned into a goddess and attacked a Garlean airship until the thing blasted her out of the sky. Really, as deaths go you couldn't ask to go out in a more epic way. Haurchefant died in our character's arms after struggling to breathe because Zephirin lanced him in the gut. I think if we'd seen him fight Zephirin then tackle him off the side of the Vault or dropping after severely wounding Zephirin then his death wouldn't have been so sad.
-Ysayle is a powerful user of the Echo and one of Hydaelyn's chosen. Her consciousness may well be out there still, I wouldn't write her out of the game just yet.

When Haurchefant bit the dust, I didn't care all that much. I felt sad during the bit where his father got the news though.

However, Ysayle... During the first Ravana cutscene I was already OH NO! .. After she died, I felt like just shutting down the game for the day right then and there.

Needless to say, the only minion I use at the moment is wind-up Iceheart.

Tiny!Iceheart is pretty great...ever just sit and watch her poses?

Anyway, I think some people doubtlessly miss both. You can like more than one thing.

Probably for the reasons I listed above. I also genuinely believe that Haurchefant is probably dead for good. He may come up again somehow but our companion/friend/lover is most certainly dead. This is sad.

Ysayle I think we haven't seen the last of. As a powerful Echo user, a fellow child of Hydaelyn, and a friend (it seems she made amends) of Hraesvelgr there are some very interesting ways her consciousness might help us undo that THIRD bit of Elezen Trauma.

Separating the beings of Nidhogg and Estinien

She also has a legion of followers and may have set up a contingency plan we don't know about, who can say.

Bottom line is Ysayle is clever and powerful, like our own Warriors of Light. The body might be gone but she might not be.

Lest we forget how little narrative sense equates to something happening in a Square game, when compared to fan reaction or demand. With most of the Scions unaccounted for, I doubt very much that Yoshida-san will rush to put Ysayle back into play.

My point is it might have been intended all along for Ysayle to make a return. She DOES have a unique character model, after all, and that can grant a layer of plot armor. The Heavensward story is not done yet. Maybe she body jumped.

Maybe she body jumped into Hraesvelgr, he's been mysteriously absent since her death. It's not like he hasn't had an Elezen lady in his soul before. We still don't know how the two of them came back to peaceful terms, she was obviously discussing SOMETHING with him before he took her to Azys Lla.

Any number of shenanigans can happen here, and are probably already written in.

He was the one that helped us get a foot in the door to Ishgard, expressed concern for our well being repeatedly, bailed us out a couple of times, cheered us on, gave us a free mount, joined us in crazy rescue attempts, and in his final moments, pretty much tried to comfort us.

Edit: He *begged* his father to give us asylum, and never even told us. Who does that?!

I'm not up to this point in the story, but I had already liked his character. He is very welcoming and warm towards our player. It's a shame he had to be killed off. Atamos is my friend on the Excalibur server, and we run into each other quite a bit.
