Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn

I apologise for making a thread just to ask this but it is bugging me especially since I decided to join the Maelstrom. How on earth do you pronounce this name!? I struggle with a few of the names in this game but Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn is by far the worst.

Please if anyone knows I'd be grateful if you could help.

I Tend to dumb the names down in my head, like the Songstress of Ul'dah, I pronounce her name like salmon, just with a FL.. haha

I just make names up if I can't read them lol. It's not just the names, the dialogue in this game can be difficult to read sometimes or when when I read it just fine I don't really take any of it in and have to read it again, and man characters in this game love to talk, and talk and talk....

Not related to the thread topic but;

I really, really hate reading pirate slang. I wish they have more voice over for those stuff. I just don't understand pirate talk when you have to read them.

It's not really Celtic, but it all Roegadyn names are inspired by Celtic syllables I believe, much like how Elvaan in XI were kinda french-ish.

You know what's funny? They talk about Roegadyn lore and how their names are formed and then you see a Roegadyn player running around called Sephirothxxcloud, makes it seem a bit pointless lol.

The Japanese pronunciation is "Meruib Bruufiswin". Perhaps that helps.

haha! I am not the only one!!! This happens to me often in games and books I read, especially fantasy books. I generally just come up with something that makes sense in my head and think of it that way.

In this case, I have been thinking of it as Merl-web Blow-Fish-Win lol.

I know in German 'Bloe' is pronounced like 'blay' (it's the start of my family name so personal experience lol) and the Japanese like to play with German names and words.

So with the name Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn, I think the last name might be more pronounced:

Blay-fiss-win

or

Blay-hiss-win if the F is silent as some think.

I'm saying the first name pretty much like everyone else is, heehee. :D

I think the important part to that passage from the Localisation forum is a bit you snipped off the end;
Although the indicator Syn (for Son) and Wyn (for Daughter) is added to the end of the family name, it's described a prefix, a little bit like Klingons - Worf, Son of Mogh. So Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn is "Daughter of Bluefish" - if she had a brother, he would be Bloefhissyn (or possibly Bloefhisyn, and drop the repeated s) - Son of Bluefish.

Actually her family name is not "Blow-fiss-win" but "Blue (or bloo)-fiss-win". :p
The "oe" is pronounced like "oo" (similar to Dutch? I don't know.)

About her first name, since the roegadyn language seems to be something between Dutch, old German and something Skandinavian to me, it could either be like in "pearl" ("mearl-wibb") which would be a rather English pronounciation.
Or a bit like "mairl-wibb", as e.g. the German "e" in "Merlwyb" is read as something between "e" in "egg" and the "ai" of "hair" (not as extended as in hair maybe but I hope you get the idea).

So I suppose her name is either

"Mearl-wibb Blue-fiss-win"
or
"Mairl-wibb Blue-fiss-win"

Not based on a Celtic language, I speak some welsh and it isn't similar at all. It is similar to Old English which in turn is a bit like icelandic. In the translation we see Ahldskyf which would have been recognisable to an anglo saxon. In old english it derives from Althus meaning grown up or fully grown and gives the word ald or aeld meaning old. Skyf was ship and gives us skiff in modern english.
Merl is given as sea and I suppose is similar to mere found in the names of several english lakes today.
Wyb which they sat means wife obviously isnt that disimilar to wife which itself derives from Wif,Wiban and weib in anglo saxon and old german.

Ah, no. Maybe it's just your family name being wierd (many names are) but in typical German, "Bloe" would contract to "Blö". The sound an "ö" makes is like the name of the letter O in english.

So if pronounced in a German style, you'd go more like "Bloh".


But that "wyn" is far more Welsh in style, which comes out as "win" when spoken in English.

Naming conventions makes wyb suffix mean she was married iirc, there's a dev post on it from the localization team. That's why I think the y's are pronounced like saying the letter "y" outloud. wyb just kinda sounds like wife that way.
