Botany is the worse right now. you can do Miner or Fisher as one both are useful in different ways, choose whichever you like more.
and i would do your main Disciple of War/Magic class as the other so your Retainer can inherit your gear.
If you only have 2 retainers then I would do a battle class and miner. Battle class is probably the most useful post heavensward, and miner is probably the better out the land ones. If you have 4 or more retainers then just get one of each.

See what minions you really want. Use that retainer.
At the moment the most useful retainer to me is my DOW/DOM one. They can get chimera manes, amphithere skins, deepeye tears and other pain to gather materials. All retainers have their uses though so if you end up with 4 id get one of each honestly.
Also I looked you up and it says you dont have any of your DOL leveled, retainers cap out at your level on the job they are. So you'd have to level DOL if you want to use a DOL retainer of the same job. (DOW/DOM are the same way so youd probably want a conjurer retainer)
Is a battle class actually useful/profitable, or is it just the fact that they're easy to gear?
Leveling another class doesn't bother me, in fact having a retainer would probably be what'd motivate me to get it done. I don't think I'll want a CNJ retainer though, half the fun of retainers is playing dress up with races that aren't your own.
Battle class has the advantage that you can set them to farm annoying materials (like Gelato Flesh and Deepeye Tears) while you do stuff that is more entertaining. Like watching grass grow.
Is that profitable? Those items seem to only sell for 500 gil a piece. Do they bring them in large quantities?
Initially, DoW/DoM retainers were leaps and bounds more profitable than the others. Now, it's hit or miss. You need to check your servers market board to gauge which might be the most profitable. Chances are, it's a tie between combat retainers and mining ones. FSH is all right... but again, you'd need to check for prices on your server. For FSH, this would be things like the Blue Cloud Coral, Mogpom, etc.
Gelato Flesh is around 1500 each on my server, so with 10 per hour (about half being HQ, mind you) that's a pretty decent side income considering we have GC seals out the wazoo to buy ventures.
I have 2 miners, a botanist, a fisher, and 2 DoW. Yeah, I like to craft...
Fisher's can bring you the Gestahl minion, which sells for 2.5 million+. But that is if RNG is on your side of course. DoW/M are more reliable in their income, but smaller amounts.
If you're a crafter, both of your retainer should be Dow/DoM.
But if you're not crafter then it doesn't matter much which job you choose for retainers,Go double Fisher reatainers !
I went with 2 Miners for gathering mats that I don't want to get myself...comes in handy.
1 Botanist for gathering different mats, 1 Fisher to get stuff like hammerhead shark (needed for strength potions) and one WHM...battle classes can all get mats like skins and the like. All in all I have been very glad to have these collecting mats for me.
Can't wait until they add in the ability for Retainers to use Job gears like Ninja and Paladin.
Also all these items you're talking about are from Quick Exploration right? An hour to find a random loot tied to their class and cost 2 ventures?
I have 5 Retainers so I got 2 Battle Classes (one getting close to Lv50), and 3 Gathering Class one of each. I might go for a 6th one because I have NO bloody room left for items and there's going to be much more... might go with another Battle Class if I do.
I could've swore that Devs stated that they're planning on giving Retainers the ability to use Job-related gear so I'm not sure how they're going to do that. If you main a class to cap and your Retainer is the same thing it would be counter-productive if you had to give up your Soulstone to allow them to use gear. Maybe they get something else in retainer or there's an option to have them BECOME the job via the Retainer Option menu. I don't know.
Um... Battle Class Retainers can't equip Job-related gear and weapons, glamour or otherwise. I just want to up my Retainers' item level and not only that but lessen the load of items on my character.
Well they increase the Retainer's level cap from 50 to 60?
Yes, retainers can reach level 60. Remember that the maximum level of your retainer is limited by the level you have reached on your character for that job. If you're only maxing a single job, then make sure your retainers are that job.
I used to have an Archer, Gladiator and Conjurer retainer as well as miner (they were all 50). I've since reset the Gladiator and Conjurer to be another Archer and a Botanist. I expect I will always have those jobs maxed out.
Hey quick question regarding fishing retainers. At 60 do they have the ability to catch coernthian crabs?
I think upgraded Law weapon is the highest you can give your retainer atm.
Coccoons (the ones that replaced crawler coccoons which i forget the name) still sell for a pretty good amount at least on my server, plus every once in a while i get some sort of floss that happened to sell for 300K each, so the notion of botanist retainer being no good is not entirely true.
I have 4 Retainers mainly a 4th one due to storage issues but my retainers are Archer/Bard, Miner and Botanist. The 4th one i never bothered adding a class yet
