Has anyone had this proc at times other than the quest to obtain it? I've been mining for hours and nothing.
yes
my issue is fishing, can it proc on non schools, so far ive only seen it proc in schools
I imagine it will only be schools of fish
They have catalysts listed that are obtained by mining and logging too, and the quest and patch notes even say so. wassup with that....
I've gotten it to proc a couple of times but so far the rate is dismal. Out of gathering both mining & logging in the required areas I have seen Fingerprint proc 6 times. That is with gathering for roughly 2 hours at a time. 6 Times in the past few days.
It's really bad >.>
spent 6 hours mining grade 4 coerthas, not one proc. procs on abilities in general seem to get shittier as you go up in grades.
Well it would have to if you can get catalysts from bald knollNVM they added fish schools to bald knoll thanks for the heads up SE! And WOW, Black Sole are here too!. and fkin A i just noticed a list of areas where you can get catalysts, and iron lake isnt on the mining list ><
all abilities are really low proc now, leveled from mid 37 to mid 38 on botany and an ability proced once, which was sweat of brow
This ability needs to be adjusted. It's bad enough there are so many of these, farming the ones you want at this proc rate just isn't hacking it.
Unequip Ghost Print and your proc rate for skills goes back to pre-patch levels....I think.
yeah, the equip before quest is done seems buggy. Try to unequip the abilithy, change job and back, and reequip. Worked better for me after that (not much though, procs about 33% now)
There are also sweet spots for each catalyst.
I had it proc twice in about an hour of fishing, second time on my last attempt....
Oh and a few fishers I know have done some testing and it does seem only to proc on schools of fish not random spots.
The proc rate is fine—considering they took away gathering fatigue.
There's a chart in the patch notes that might be useful for some folks who are confused about the materia catalyst locations, it was mentioned above but I'll repost it here for folks who don't memorize every patch note :-)
Catalyst--------------Gathering-Point--Location-
Carbonized-Matter-----Mining----------Horizon's-Edge-
Petrified-Matter------Mining----------Nophica's-Wells-
Fossilized-Matter-----Mining----------Dragonhead-
Crystallized-Matter---Mining----------Treespeak-
Germinated-Matter-----Logging---------Tranquil-Paths-
Decayed-Matter--------Logging---------Humblehearth-
Decomposed-Matter-----Logging---------Iron-Lake-
Liquefied-Matter------Logging---------Halatali-
Calcified-Matter------Fishing---------Bloodshore-
Cultured-Matter-------Fishing---------Cedarwood-
Ossified-Matter-------Fishing---------Bald-Knoll-
Cretified-Matter------Fishing---------Nine-Ivies-
If you're not gathering in those spots, fingerprints should have a zero percent proc chance ^^
Sorry the chart's ugly, I seem to be having trouble with formatting, but a nicer copy is in the patch notes.
Agreed the proc is ridiculous, to be honest SE would be better of having catalyst drop randomly like Dark matter (assuming the skill is equipped)
I haven't had much difficulty with Catalysts as 50 Botanist. The proc of the ability was about every 2-3 trees and in obtaining the Catalysts I had 100% success. I would guess that your level is the significant factor in deciding how often the ability kicks in, they don't want rank 40 gatherers obtaining super rare items with regularity.
I had a feeling it might be that as well, since it's been activating a lot more for me on my botanist than it does on Fisher. That or it's based on a particular gathering stat. It would also account for it supposedly kicking in more often on lower level nodes.
This is horrible. I've been fishing in Cedarwood exclusively at schools of fish for hours and not once have I seen FoG proc. In fact, none of my equipped abilities seem to be firing off anymore.
It's always been possible to gather higher ranked items from low level nodes but the difficulty of successfully gathering these items has been the same with all grades. The regularlity of ability procs as well as the execution of the gather are difficulty related, it makes perfect sense a higher level gatherer would have higher success, does it not?
Naturally I'm having the same problem with Fingerprint of the Gods.
What makes it worse is that they haven't updated the nodes they spawn for you during levequests. I think this is probably an oversight, just like how most crafting leves still seem to use old recipes, say they need subcrafts, support, etc.
On one hand, it's good that this means that only "dedicated" gatherers are getting catalysts, but it also means that the prices are going to be sky-high forever and a lot of the Materia system will be rendered moot.
Yeah I can understand if the ability activated rarely for high grade catalysts, since it's pretty much DoL's "endgame", but low and mid grade need to drop a lot more often so low-level materia sees a lot more use and the playerbase can become stronger.
From what i've gathered, no pun intended, the major factors seem to be pretty basic: grade of node + level of player. That being said, an unwritten factor could be moon phase, especially when it comes to fishing. There's been other players who have noticed that proc rate is non-existent during half moons but much better during new/full.
I always find it amusing that everytime the devs are asked a question about moon phase effects on crafting and gathering, they intentionally avoid the topic. Conspiracy theories aside, there probably is something to it.
I'm not having any trouble with activation. Infact I just had it activate three times on a single tree. I've never looked at the moon phase once during my 14 career, does that mean it doesn't make a difference?
Yeah, I'm a skeptic too, sorry... :)
I seemed to nitice Fingerprint of the Gods and Sweat of Brow do not play nice with each other. The other day I was grinding with both equiped in Humblehearth and had 0 procs. Once I removed Fingerprint, I had some Sweat procs. Don't know if this was just chance, but figured I'd share.
After putting all my perception gear back on after spiritbonding some dated gear, the rate at which Fingerprints activated was noticeably higher. My friend has experienced similar results as well.
Most levelling gatherers wouldn't use perception since gathering and output is entirely more beneficial to them. However, 50 gatherers don't need gathering and only need a little output, so they'd have a lot more perception. This could be another factor to why 50 gatherers are generally having more luck.
If you're struggling to get Fingerprints to activate, try equipping some more perception gear. The Angler's Hat and Raptorskin Survival belt will give you +32 combined. It may improve your activation rate, in which case you'll gather more catalysts.
Remember, though, if you're not 50, removing too much gathering and output will make it more difficult to obtain items and lower the amount of gathers you can perform, respectively. :)
Thanks for the info :)

anyone know any foods that can increase perception? I read on lodestone journals food effects are crazy after 1.19 so might help out for those lower levels or high level gatherers to test it out some more :)
Update: FYI found out cottage cheese increases perception now I just need to find it and test it out :)
Looks like SE acknowledge that fingerprints proc rate was too low and is now increasing it. Also it will last until the node is runs out of attempts.
I think this marks the end of overpriced catalysts too.
