hopefully an adjustment so their AoE will work better with enochain
I'm not caring too much on the AOE department, but a little mobility would be nice. Something little forgiving if you get stunned or have to move during a boss fight, nothing too drastic though.
BLM single target numbers are fine. They mostly need buffs to AoE and fun. Yeah, I know Enochian isn't that bad, but I did enjoy the 2.x gameplay more.
BLM is fine until you have to move at the wrong time.
The moment a movement or target loss causes you to lose a buff refreshing cast, you go from "executing a high damage rotation" to "try to salvage this mess of buff timers we call a class".
Let me provide an example.
I am 181 on my BLM, Hive weapon, and did a run of Fractal today for my expert.
I did 1050 dps on Curator, where I was targeted for only 1 aoe and 1 tile, but I positioned myself so the tile was easily avoided. Pretty close to a dummy fight with me oneshotting the adds / F4.
I did about 940 dps on Minotaur because his charges broke 2 of my F4's. Aside from that minimal movement, I used FS and TC to reposition myself if I would be in range of the 360 cleave.
And on Phantom Ray... 477 dps.
Four Hundred Seventy Seven... That. Is. Pathetic.
So the question becomes why did I do literally half as much dps on Ray as I did on Minotaur?
Simple, every single time he did his aoe which divides the room in quarters, it was aimed such that I was at the center of a slice. Every. Single. Time... I counted...
I initially started close to him to minimize the amount of movement I would need for those cones... His regular melee aoe interrupted an F4. (wtf) I moved slightly out of aoe range, cone made me break F1 near the middle, had to Swift it, thats okay. Next cone, right smack dab at the start of the first B4 refresh, no Swift, no Enochian for 30s, FAIL.
Next cone finishing up the UI rotation to prepare for Enochian, used a TC proc to move through the cone. Next, F1 again, already used Swift to get off B4 due to a delayed mana tick during the transition. Had to hard cast F3 to get the last 2 F4's in. Next, AGAIN just before the B4 refresh, not enough time on UI to finish B4, not enough time on Enochian to refresh UI, had to switch into the old rotation after moving out of the cone AND the ground aoes.
And that my friends is the state of BLM.
On a dummy you are great. With knowledge of the fight and using procs to pre-position, you are mostly fine. If the game decides to plop an aoe on your head when you NEED to refresh UI, AF, or Enochian, and you do not have Swiftcast up... GG have fun recovering.
If you lose AF during Enochian, you typically have to use F3 to get back into AF3, otherwise you are out ~half your potency. If you lose UI when you need to (successfully) B4, you are screwed. If your target dies before the cast finished (not applicable to Phantom Ray but still), you are often screwed. The ONLY saving grace that a BLM has in those situations is Swiftcast, which you get to use once, ONCE per complete set. (~2.5 Enochian cycles allowing for a natural Enochian refresh).
PS. Someone may recall that I had personally done out the calculations to show that the new Enochian rotation is only about 15-17% more potency/sec than the 2.X rotation, so losing Enochian should not be THAT much of a dps loss.
Here is the problem with that. 2 of the buffs in the Enochian rotation are also required for the 2.X rotation.
When you "fail" the Enochian rotation, it is typically because you lost AF, UI, or Enochian itself. When you lose Enochian itself, your MP costs no longer match up and you can maybe squeeze out 2 F1's before having to switch to UI for mana, that is a dps loss. If you lose UI then I hope you are at full MP so you can at least go into the 2.X rotation of F3+4xF1, or 3xF1, dont recall. When you lose AF, then you can "kinda" salvage things by using F3, assuming you have enough time on Enochian to make it worthwhile. Otherwise you may be better off hard casting B3-B4-F3 to resume the rotation and cut your losses.
Basically what it comes down to is that this feels like unequal punishment.
I do not think any dps, besides maybe monk, is AS shafted as BLM when mechanics cause them to lose a rotation critical buff... Though TBH given how few Monks I see in experts and Savage, at least on Cactuar, they may in fact be even more punished by endgame mechanics than BLM.
That's why it's not fun for me. Firestarter, Thundercloud, and Swiftcast+Flare are fun to press because you deal good damage with instant feedback - a big, satisfying boom. Enochian is not fun to press. There's no feedback at all; it's just a buff. However, it feels awful when it falls off, making Enochian negative fun. Yet we often skip our most fun buttons for the sake of keeping this boring, fun sucking buff active because it's key to our rotation. Instead of feeling rewarded for doing well, we feel punished for doing poorly (or simply being unlucky).
Give F4 a bigger, louder boom and make it instant cast. Then it will be extremely fun to press. Give it a longer cooldown and balance BLM DPS around the change so we use more F1, Firestarter, and Thundercloud. With less overall DPS coming from F4, losing Enochian woule be less punishing, which would help swing our rotation towards fun and rewarding instead of unfun and punishing.
It'll never happen, but I can dream, right?
Anyway, let's not debate once again.
Is there an official source somewhere about changes coming to BLM ?
And what changes if so ?
There's been no new information. They're holding everything for three major info dumps, the first of which is during the 14 hour anniversary stream. Look for updates then. :)
So... where is the news...
We were always the one to know the fight beforehand, and even with the Endboss on the other Expert Dungeon (don´t know the name, but the anoying snake charging around between tornadoes) i still outdps every teammate i ever got assigned with...
BLM got with 3.0 just the progression like 2.0... simple to play, hard to master...
wtb: QoL changes.
You should be able to place your leylines (i.e. the place where you want to stay) so, that it's half on the first cone and half on second cone.. so that you're able to minimize movement.

Like were the AST in this video is standing.
You may get those annoying circle AoEs to dodge, but if ppl are smart, they won't screw you additionally by placing their AoE on top of you, too. :D
My motto is "Never stay between a boss and a BLM, behind a BLM or on top of a BLM". Their life is hard enough. :p
I love A3, when all ppl stack (foolishly) at the beginning and all blueish "push-away"-cones are aimed in direction of the poor BLM.
Hrhr, I once got yelled at because I dared not to stack with everyone else in center. I usually stand to the side of the boss with not a person between me and boss, and far away from center. It's sad that such things are necessary in order to play BLM with as little disruption as possible. To think developers at SE approved this...
@ topic
BLM does not need buffs. What it needs is reduced button bloat, smoother selfbuff management, and gameplay that allows you to concentrate on fight mechanics every once in a while instead of rotation demanding all attention. They could buff all damage by 5000% and still have a clunky mess of a class that simply is less fun to play than it was pre 3.0 (careful; this might be the author's subjective opinion).
Problems are not solved by sugarcoating numbers.
The best change would be Fire 4 refreshing AF, so when you have to move during a Fire 4 cast you don't have to replace it with a Fire 1 to keep up AF3. I feel like that would solve 90% of the issues with the Enochian.
The rotation is still pretty simple. Its just that whenever you're forced to cancel a Fire 4, you need to cast Fire 1 instead to refresh stacks or you drop AF3, which is both a pain to keep track of and a annoying dps loss when you have to 3xF4 2xF1 instead of 4xF4 1xF1.
Though I guess it would just take all the skill out of the Enochian rotation.
Funny how the 2.x rotation feels closer to the 2.x BRD than it does to 3.x BLM. I took the freedom of movement granted by frequent proc activation for granted.
I'm not entirely sure that Enochian needs to be made easier somehow, but it's fair to say that the new rotation is far less forgiving of errors and flukes.
It probably would yes. Generally classes have too few full replacement abilities, which is one of the inherent design flaws of FFXIV. Look at WHM's DPS abilities for example; Stone II replaces Stone in the sense that you never touch Stone again for DPS once you learned Stone II, Stone III does the same with Stone II and Aero. Lower tier DPS abilities are simply cut out, and do I hear any WHM complain? Probably not. Yet BLM still uses all 4 tiers of Fire and Blizzard in some way. Why? It's no miracle that things become pointlessly complex by the time you learned 35 abilities since you still need to use nearly all of them all the time. You'd think someone among devs would notice that.
Errors the player made, no issue. Flukes that are out of your control, big issue. Punishing the player via RNG leads to incredible frustration, and I dare say nobody plays the game to become frustrated.
BTW, what happened to "we don't want players to not recognize their class anymore"?
Nothing has been announcement when it come to blm getting a buff.
However if they do get a buff, it'll most likely be an aoe buff or an indirect dps buff with mobility/enochian QoL changes
At this point I would like to at least have some comment from the devs as to the current QoL state of BLM.
Beyond that, a step-by-step approach to making the rotation less of a migraine in endgame content would be good.
As a potential first step, make the following adjustments to B4.
Instant cast, applies UI3, affected by AF3 Ice penalty and cost reduction, can only be used under Enochian, 230 potency (280/3*2.5), refreshes Enochian to previous duration-5s.
This change would keep dps the same when refreshing Enochian "correctly" from UI, but also allow you to refresh Enochian while running for your life.
And before anyone asks, from a PvP standpoint you would be able to spam this while running a grand total of 6 times. Each time you use it you lose 5s on Enochian, so the durations would go 25-20-15-10-5-0... once you hit 0 on the 6th cast, you no longer have Enochian and cannot use B4 again.
Put this change in, see how the rotation feels, see if it is "too easy", etc, etc.
The Fire phase stays the same, but if you mess up there, you can generally recover at a dps loss. However this change will primarily remove situations where you are forced to move when you have to refresh Enochian and are basically locked out of doing so.
Definitely not my preferred option. The problem is not the cycle. The problem is mobility. In the 2.0 rotation, we could almost always count on procs when we needed to move to sustain dps. In 3.0 we don't.
I suggest that fire IV should be able to trigger firestarter proc (with a 40% chance like fire1). It would help a lot to maintain the cycle as you could use to move away from aoe while keeping AF up OR use it in your standard cycle to cast an extra fire IV.
2.x BLM was easy I agree, maybe too easy, maybe not. There were still plenty in 2.x who did not play right despite its simplicity. Also Enochian as a mechanic that makes the class more interesting I have no problem with.
Problem is how it was executed. Combination of A) F4/B4 still requiring AF / UI during Enochian while not refreshing them, B) potential possibility to keep Enochian alive 100% of the time, and C) timing so tight that bad RNG utterly destroys your DPS does not play out too well. Change one of these for the better and you'd already see vast improvement. See, this isn't so much about making the class easier, it's about making it fair and fun to play; those are fundamentally different things. Gameplay can still be interesting and engaging despite not spitting in your face every few seconds.
So am I the only one that's pretty happy with blm atm?
I think one of the biggest issues with BLM is that we play a reactive class while lvling (reacting to procs) and when you hit 60, not 59, 60, you get a whole different class.
When I realized how enochian works with fiire IV (and god shocked to see it didnt apply AF), it forced me to go to a dummy with a friend and train my rotation for a while.
It was a totally new class. I started to ignore most of TS procs, unless it happens at the exact right moment and kept jugling to keep enochian.
I wont preach to the choir, we all know how hard it can be maintain it on hard content with all that movement and mechanics to deal with it.
If given me the power, in a more realistic change, I'd do a little QoL change so that Fire IV nor Bliz IV cancels mid cast if enochian runs. It is a small change that could help a little. A bigger change would be simply to let TS4 proc, somehow, reapply AF as a bonus effect (So we could actually use it over fire I).
People should know better then to confuse "simple" and "easy". 2.x BLM was "simple" -- excelling was FAR from "easy".
Now, it's neither simple NOR easy (and more difficult then 2.x to boot) -- which is outright worse.
Some people like it. Some people hate it. Some people just think it's awful design and are praying for some type of improvement before they run out of non-class locked pieces to buy. I love BLM conceptually .. and I can work with the 3.0 rotation. I just think it's awful, and don't find it to be an improvement.
Enochian is getting a buff by the looks of it and that thunder is being reviewed too which is great!

Q: It's difficult to maintain Enochian. Are there any plans to change this?
A: Currently, when Enochian is reused, instead of overwriting the amount of time remaining, it shortens the duration first before overwriting the remaining time, and this is what made it hard to maintain. Since we have received a lot of feedback in regards to this, we’ll change this to overwrite the original effect. Additionally, we're looking into making adjustments to the effect of Thunder since it has little effect while using Enochian. For all other points, I believe there are parts that will take a bit of getting used to, so we would like you to first try out Enochian after the change and submit your feedback.
It also appears that its intended for spells to use large sums of your mp.

Q: As the level cap increased our maximum MP also increased, but it feels like the rate of MP consumption has also increased. Will this be fixed as our item levels increase?
A: No, even if your item level increases this will not change. The ratio between the amount of maximum MP increased with the increase of item levels, and the amount of MP consumed has been structured while considering the entire 3.x series. However, we may make some adjustments to specific jobs if there’s a situation where their MP may run out in raids and other end-game encounters.
I think dps-wise BLM is fine atm (Not the best at single target or AoE but reasonable for both), what we do need is more utility to make BLM equally desirable as SMN in raids. Currently the choice between BLM and SMN is a no-brainer to be honest.
Well... maybe if Apoc was a 30y caster centered aoe... Help tanks w/ all the fancy magic tank busters...
We're not getting a rez.
We're not getting any kind of group or player dps buff... hell THM/BLM barely has its OWN dps buff, aside from Leylines...
Making Apoc useful for surviving heavy magic damage may be the best we can ask in terms of "utility".
Restoring Manawall would help for a start.
The nerf to Manawall was a horrible decision. I get they didn't want us cheesing mechanics, and for ninja the change makes more sense. And I can even understand it being OP for 2.0 Blm, but now Manawall would be so useful if it blocked a physical attack so we can stay still and get off another attack, possibly a crucial one that refreshes a timer at the last second.
These changes already happened. Their change to thunder was a potency buff which did absolutely fuck all
I never understood why apo is not aoe. It is literally a shit version of fey convenant.
Apo : 3m cd / 12s duration /leave a debuff / single target
Fey : 2m cd / 20s duration / dont leave debuff / aoe
I'm actually curious why they nerfed Manawall as it was. I figured it'd be because they planned to make a lot more raid wide damage physical, starting with Alexander Savage this tier, but basically the only thing it'd help with is A1S's Prey mechanic (and its nerfed form is basically enough to let you cheese it). A2S, some slight tanking I guess? A3S, it wouldn't really let you do anything you couldn't do with the hand swipes, group or tank would die regardless. A4S, everything in there is magical or unaspected except for the adds.
Future proofing the skill I guess?
We got an explanation in Letters from the Producer XXIII:
Q6. There seems to be a lot of nerfs in 3.0. Could you explain the reasoning behind this?
A6. When making adjustments to the job capabilities between each role, our fundamental policy is to make adjustments so that each job is in line with each other. However, when there is a concern that certain job actions would destroy the balance of content, it’s difficult to make adjustments in this manner and there are times we need to fix them. In regards to Shade Shift and Manawall, these both made it so ninja and black mage were impervious to physical attacks, and since future content will have a lot of magic-based attacks, we decided it would be best to change their effects to what they are now to increase the fun of the content.
I don't possibly see how you're confused. They changed Manawall from blocking 2 physical attacks to absorbing a certain amount of physical damage because there's going to be a lot more magic-based attacks in the game. Duh. Gosh, how could you not understand?
That simplicity was part of what made BLM unique. Enochian turns BLM into a completely different class that feels more like MNK than it does 1-59 THM/BLM. The problem is we already have MNK, but now BLM, DRG, and even SMN get to play the 'keep my buff up' mini-game too. Many DPS classes feel more homogenized than ever, and it's a very unwelcome change if you were a fan of something that made your class unique.
I get bored easily and like to play a variety of classes, so having them all feel similar is ... well, boring. The game as a whole is less interesting. That makes me want the old BLM back for variety if nothing else (and I also really did enjoy watching for procs - procs are fun!).
To: Dev Team,
I sincerely hope you get to read Kenji's fantastic post. I totally agree.
Ultimately, Black Mage in 3.0 just feels NOT FUN at all. You've taken a job that was solid in 2.0 and just made it WORSE and needlessly complex.
The worst part is there are only going to be MORE types of Boss Mechanics in 3.0 and beyond that will be all forms of AOE, Line Attacks, Move! / Avoid!, etc. The problem is you've given BLM a mechanic that is *inherently* at odds with what you're going to subject all players to (lots of Gimmicks in Boss Fights).
This problem with BLM is only going to get worse and worse as more ridiculous Gimmicks get introduced.
There have been many good suggestions in this thread and others (from Fire IV / Blizzard IV refreshing Astral Fire / Umbral Ice respectively; to maybe using Scathe or Thundercloud Procs to refresh AF/UI or extending Enochian, etc.).
Please consider some changes to improve how Black Mages can better adapt to forced Movement; to add more FUN back to the job.
Thanks.
I don't actually think SE specifically set out to make any job more difficult. I think they set out to make it more interesting. Whether it turned out that way or not is up for debate. Personally, I love BLM. It's it perfect? No, but I still enjoy it. I've loved BLM since the beginning, and I also can completely understand the frustration of those who feel the class is completely different now. I get it.
As far as problems with the class itself......oh boy. I mostly disagree. There are a few minor QoL changes I'd like to see. And I mean minor. Something like extending AF/UI timers 3 seconds. This could fix so many problems. Making scathe a bit more useful like maybe give a % proc to extend enochian a few seconds. There are many different suggestions I've seen that would be cool, but as far as fundamentally changing it, no way.
I kinda like enochian now. It took a little while to get used to it, and to remember to pay attention to it, but now that I'm used to it, it's not that bad. If i could change something, I'd improve the methods of upkeeping enochian to allow movement, like making blizzard 4 an instant, or an ability that allows the user to cast all spells while moving for a brief time (the cast times would still be there, you'd just be able to move without interrupting them). Not sure if those would make it too easy though.
