Lost and Overwhelmed... Returning to the game after super long break

So, with FFXI winding down, I decided to pick up FFXIV again with the release of Heavensward... Now, I'm completely lost at to what do. I have SMN to 50, and I've spent this time trying to get all the cross skills that I could use from Archer and Black Mage. I've got a hand full of Darklight gear pieces, but not a full set. I have I got my Summoner's Doublet at some point, don't remember when >_>; I've finished the first scenario of the story. I started my Relic for SMN, but stopped on Garuda HM... What should I being do? Is there a good guide I can read up on? I'm gonna have to re-learn SMN and maybe redo my macros... @_@ Ugh.... the catch-up

Well if you want to get the xpac, I would just finish the MSQ up, wouldn't even bother with the relic, pretty much useless in the xpac. As for gear Iron works gear was the go to (poetic) gear, but again if you plan on getting the xpac even that gear gets outclassed around level 55ish. If you aren't planning on the xpac, then I would finish the relic and start farming poetics for the best gear you can get, also keep going with the MSQ to unlock more dungeons and primals.

There is alot to do in the expansion, though the "getting bored" threads occasionally pop up, but mainly from people who play pretty much non-stop, big rush to hurry and wait for more content. I didn't think I would ever get it, but I did, and I'm glad I did, having a blast with it.

I have the expansion pack... and I am in Mor Dhona right now... It looks completely different. And I can't even find the guys the used to do the tomes >_>;

They were up the hill from the Aetheryte towards the right side in the little hut. Though Rowena and her gang have moved to Idyllshire in the xpac, not sure who is there now, sorry haven't been there in a while.

If you're gonna do the expansion, you need to finish the MSQ from all the 2.x patches. If you finished 2.0 and nothing else, then it should start in the Waking Sands in Vesper Bay in Western Thanalan. I was told by some newer people that the MSQ rewards gear now to assist you in getting the gear level required for the trials and dungeons. But honestly the person above said just about everything else, so I guess that's all I have to say. Let me know if there's anything specific you want to know I guess.

Even if you've done the xpac and can go to Idyllshire, I think Rowena can actually still be found in Mor Dhona.

I found the people but now I have to reassess what I need to do for gear. I guess I can try to continue the story some and maybe things will work out from there.

The Main Storyline will now award gear with the ilvls you need to get you to Heavensward, so I'd just continue with that. If you have to, you can purchase gear from the Market Board.

just do MSQ, like u i casme back after a very long break, ignore everything else, ironworks, relic, etc and just do MSQ, those quests will eventually give u gear putting u at iLevel 110-120

To add to this, a lot of the level 50 content is pretty dead. Hopefully SE will update it somehow, but I wouldn't recommend trying to gear up in the more traditional ways. As others have said... MSQ all the way. Then when you hit heavensward you can go from there.

Even without doing any of the MSQ past 2.0, you can very likely get iLv 115 gear for cheaps on the market board. A huge upgrade over darklight (you have been gone a while hehe).

As others have said, relic weapon is pretty much pointless right now. Even a fully upgraded relic is only good through around lv 55 (when I saw that I could buy a weapon for 10k gil on the market board that was better than my Zeta, I wanted to cry).

To add to what people have been saying, you actually need to complete the original 3 HM Primals (Ifrit, Garuda and Titan) to advance past a certain point in the MSQ. So if you're on Garuda in terms of your relic, you're not wasting much of your time at all in finishing it.

You have 5 sets of 19-20 main scene quests you must complete which are under the titles of:
A Realm Awoken [awards ilvl 70 blue items]
Through the Maelstrom [awards ilvl 90 items]
Defenders of Eorzea [awards ilvl 110 items]
Dreams of Ice [awards ilvl 110 weapons/armor]
Before the Fall [awards materia and tons of gil]
