What is the point of having a twist if nothing is done with it? (story spoiler)

The moment it was reveled that Thancred got possessed by Lahabrea the first thing that popped into my head was: I don't even know who you are!?!. Watching as Minfilia got super sad seeing him be evil now made angry. And whats worse NOTHING happens after this. LITERALLY nothing is done with. The only reason why it happens was to give an explanation as to what happened to Thancred. Nothing else. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF IT THEN? Should i have been surprised when i saw the reveal. Hell no! i don't even know who he is. Why should care about a character that has barely done anything and has been missing most of the other half of the story. I even completely forgot who that person was. Because of that i was even more pissed of at first. because i thought it was some random dude. i had to google to remember who he was. Please elaborate, explain to me why it happened.

Hard for me to weigh in due to perspective... It's possible I took the Thancred reveal for granted because Yda, Papalymo, Y'shtola, and Thancred were all introduced in the game's original 1.0 release in 2010.

It could be that this was an oversight on SE's part in terms of looking at the story from the perspective of someone who's only just now coming in from where A Realm Reborn starts.

Okay nevermind... I -didn't- remember that, but it's a fair point. You do interact with Thancred quite a bit prior to the reveal. Also, in an on-going MMO, it's hard to state whether or not "nothing" was done with this; the story ain't over until they announce that they're done creating new content for FFXIV.

Same thing happens a few more time iirc later on, don't want to spoil it though. =l SE just likes to backtrack on their decisions, poor writing.

Did you not watch any cutscenes or read any of the text up to this point? Or heck, even watch the ARR opening. You're even a black mage! Your entire level 1 to level 15 storyline focused on thancred and no one else! >_> (Assuming you started as a thaumaturge)

And even if you didn't start in ul'dah, you would have seen thancred many times. In every last waking sands cutscene nearly, and in the entire Ifrit plotline.

Thancred almost completely disappears around soon after you kill ifrit somewhere around lvl25ish or so, that's when he is sent to investigate Lahabrea. And that's it, there only couple of mentions about to his sudden disappearance and that's that. Mind you the quest where he is revealed is around lvl 45 ish. Getting from 25ish to 45ish takes a long time especially if you're not playing it every day. Meaning you can completely forget that Thancred even existed. Because you don't even do a quest to figure out his wheareabouts. He is literally forgotten for 20 or so levels. And then you make a sudden reveal without ANY prior explanation that such thing could be possible. Oh wait i'm sorry there's like a sentence told by Minfilia that such thing could happen. She told it either before she got captured by the empire, or after the reveal had happened i don't remember it well enough. So please by all means explain that

By your logic, they shouldn't have made Jason Todd come back as Red Hood, because there were 20 years between the batman comic when he was killed off and when he returned. Or perhaps they shouldn't have made rescuing Han Solo the opening act of Return of the Jedi, because there was a three year gap between Empire and Jedi, and who remembers what happened in a movie 3 years ago?

Thancred left to investigate something shady, Thancred is unaccounted for when the scions are attacked, Thancred is later seen to have been possessed by the shady stuff he went to investigate, and judging from your magitek armor mount, I assume you know that defeating Lahabrea without killing Thancred in the process is the finale to the 2.0 storyline. The character is thus introduced, the problem is set up, and the situation is resolved. Literally the definition of "doing something" with a twist.

It's not like he was a never-before-seen character who was defeated by accident during his first appearance.

Did you mean they completely just cut the scene, or just that nothing's been done with that scene yet.

I don't know, Square's been pretty good with keeping their story straight from what I've seen. The mess with Thancred was kind of out of left field until you think about how the events following it even happened. No, I think the really mess plot isn't the metaplot but rather Raubahn's during Heavensward. It felt like such an afterthought, like, "Wow, this is shaping up nicely... but I feel like we're forgetting something... oh shit, right, him... uh, guys, quick, write something up for Raubahn!"

same old cliche as Kain Highwind and Golbeza bs. the difference is Thancred is way less important character. nobody cares about him.

the Ul'dah revolution story was good in ARR but then it was cut short in HW. it feels like they don't know how to continue it or just want us to focus on Ishgard business.

The whole thing with Thancred isn't really that bad. But what happens at the end of ARR story and then later comes back in Heavensward as if it wasn't as shocking kinda annoys me. Although in one sense I'm relieved it happened the way it happened since these things happened to a likeable character. I always feel that this story is like a PG rated Game of Thrones story. Although FF originally had stories like these in their older games way before GoT came out. But w/o GoT having no restriction on what they do, then it's easy to look at their story and what happens from that show since a lot of scenes are really shocking, cruel, and violent. Certain moments from any story tends to leave an impacting memory with you for life. (ie - spoiler from FF7 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FFXIV is an ongoing story, if they just played out every twist at the first opportunity, things would get a little boring. I was disappointed with the certain twist in Ul'dah, but it did change things still and now the whole syndicate dynamic has changed.

Plus we still have the rogue Crystal Braves out there, and with us likely heading toward Ala Mhigo in 4.0, I expect we will be seeing more of both them and Ul'dah

The grim, cruel, dark 2.5 storyline could have easily been used to open up the way for content like Dynamis in FF14's 3 cities starting with Uldah.

This would have been a great way to continue three nation storylines alongside expansions.

I am sad at the way the expansion went, because the Uldah storyline relying on intrigue grew to be lot more interesting overall compared with Heavensward.

Thancred is more active character in the story after 2.1. I think instead of Thancred, Lahabrea should have taken over the body of the Scion that you meet in the level 1-15 zone. If you did not start in Ul'Dah (did not play 1.0) then you will only meet Thancred for a short time during the Ifrit questline. I am not saying Thancred is forgettable, but SE should have made the vessal of Lahabrea be more connected to the warrior of light during the 2.0 storyline. When Lahabrea revealed himself as Thancred, instead of going "OOOH SHIT, OMFG Thancred MY BABY", my reaction was "Oh so there you were"

Now I like Thancred that is, because he had more screentime from 2.1 till 2.55.

Thancred will always be that stupid guy from that sends me off to do all the work for him while he accomplishes nothing (The Ifrit storyline and Lahabrea bits are to blame for this) he's kinda cool in the Leviathan arc, and maybe a little cool in the 1-15 story (definitely showing he's not completely useless). He's quirky and that's all he's got. Yda's quirky too, but her dynamic with Papalymo is hilarious and it explains why they take a backburner role as they bicker, and Y'shtola comes across as thoughtful and thorough so she doesn't seem like the type to just dive in. Thancred comes across as the type to DO something like Yda, but the fact he DOESN'T is very off-putting. He just comes off as lazy to me most of the time.
