Sneaky Microsoft crashing the game (get yer tinfoil hats!)

Just now I was reading an article about windows 10 and was surprised to learn it's been secretly downloading itself for several weeks. I looked up the folder indicated in the article, and it's dated as having been created July 9th. This is the day that I started getting odd lock-ups in the game. Now I'm wondering if this has been causing the errors all along. Hmmmm.

Its not alarming that its downloading something to do with win 10. It has thst icon bottom right and will need some kind of application to help you convert.
However I cant imagine this having any impact on your game or connection.

The folder is named C:\$windows.~BT . You'll need to have "show hidden folders" checked in your folders options to see it. Mine is at 6.03 of 6.13 GB. I only wonder because windows update is great at crashing the game, and I haven't been able to find anything else causing it.

Im rather happy about this since it will likely mean I wont have to wait to download it later. Also, mine appears to have started downloading at 3AM this morning.

It makes sense as the free 1 year upgrade to Win 10 is today/tomorrow. Given the size and number of people who selected yes, if everyone tried to down load it at the same time on day one. The Servers would crash and Microsoft would be in hot water again. I'm assuming this would allow you to install when ever you want with the least amount of downloading needed to get it up and running.

NOPE, NONE HERE.

My preference is to install to new/blank hard drives. Every time I've replaced the main hard drive in a system correlates with when I re-installed the operating system. I leave the previous install on the old drive and when I'm absolutely sure I don't need anything else from it, wipe the old drive out. I've been considering getting a SSD for a while, but could never justify buying one whilst the video card being the more obvious bottleneck.

I wouldn't upgrade to Windows 10 before SE have said their part about compatibility.
Probably not before end of the year either honestly, as there's bound to be plenty of bugs that will make your lives miserable.
Not to mention incompatibilities between third-party driver update handling, and Windows Update driver update handling...

you can disable the automatic downloading of windows update files. The options go from never checking, to just notifying you, to pre-downloading (but not installing), to automatically downloading and installing. Get into Windows Update from Control Panel, then click the link to Change Settings to see the drop-box.

Many of us have been using the review version for quite awhile and have zero problems with XIV itself.

Just FYI, unless you're running enterprise edition, on Windows 10 you won't be able to disable updates at all, only delay them on certain editions.

Pretty sure Home can't even delay.
