I know a lot of players are currently skeptical about MCH's dps performance, and I do not claim that this one idea will fix all of it's problems. But I think it would be a really good start to fixing it while still keeping the style of play that was intended.
My suggestion is to change Split Shot and have it like this:
Split Shot: 70 TP Delivers an attack of 140 potency to target.
50% chance to increase potency of next Slug Shot
70% chance to cause the next Split Shot to increase potency of next Slug Shot
Ammunition Effect: 100% chance to increase potency of next Slug Shot
100% chance to cause the next Split Shot to increase potency of next Slug Shot
Horrible personal writings of tooltips aside, I think this is an acceptable change to Split Shot. Essentially, it gives a chance for Split Shot to proc the next Split Shot to guarantee it's Enhanced Slug Shot proc. An "Enhanced Split Shot" if you will. What this does is have the MCH casting Split Shot less, and using it's better skills more, while still having rng play its part and sometimes forcing the usage of multiple Split Shots, only less than MCH's currently may have to spam it now.

I'm all for that. Part of why I dropped MCH is that when you don't have ammo available, it feels absolutely awful and boring to play when nothing procs.

People may be skeptical about their performance but they've been performing pretty well in Alexander. They probably don't really need any DPS boosts at this point.

I'm usually #2 or 3 dps in most raids as MCH so it's not as terrible as people say. I usually can beat a blm or bard depending on the fight. But what you are suggesting is a very nice idea.

Yes, remember, we don't need anymore dps because we're a "support" class. You know, we and bard are the classes designed to help people get through new content and then get kicked to the curb when it's on farm for more pure dps classes.

Why do I say that? Because when I got the idea to use 1-2-1-3-2-3 (and please note, while I won't fully claim it, I hadn't seen anyone else suggest it yet, so there's that), I got it because I discovered that I don't need to proc Slug Shot in order to proc Clean Shot. . . THEN I discovered that I could sit on the Clean Shot proc timer and maybe proc another Slug Shot. And all this without Reloads. Now to clarify: I'm not saying don't TRY to get procs in order to do more damage. But don't spam one attack purely waiting for a lucky 50/50 or a DPS cooldown to dictate whether you're really doing anything or not. Most importantly, TRY THINGS. It's a new job. There are no experts out there. And people are still getting a feel for it. We (MCH) went from being considered the worst DPS to now being accepted and welcomed in ANY content provided we can do our jobs right. And that's nothing exclusive to MCH at all; who would take any role that can't do their job right? So try things; you never know if you might be the one to develop a new, favored rotation or whatnot. -

You'd still lose dps that way... You're basically giving up 40 potency from split shot to use a non-procced Slug Shot to gain 20 potency instead of using Split Shot to gain to gain 40 potency.

The rng aspect does need to be fixed or lessened. Going 5 split shots without a single proc is awful.
Machinist dps can vary by around 10% depending on how lucky you are with procs. -

While I don't personally believe in luck, I suppose I should consider myself fortunate that I do tend to proc quite often. Only once so far have I seemed to hit some kind of RNG proc dead-zone, and thankfully it was just a hunt. Still, I'm all for (proper) experimentation and development of skills/technique. We do what we can with what we've got. I too hope for more someday soon, but don't feel at a loss for how we are now.

The entire reason I decided to do what I do was purely because spamming 1-1-1. . . didn't feel right (to me), and just 1-2-3ing regardless of procs or not seemed impractical. In the end, it all adds up the same (with ammo), so rather than arbitrarily going into 1-2-3-1-2-3 as soon as I get a Reload, I can simply transition into it anywhere in the chain. It's not perfect, no, and there ARE some losses (minor in a personal opinion, but I'm aware can add up over time), but I've found success with it.
I am, of course, quite open to any better methods that may have been, or have yet to be discovered.
