Lower Quality? Why?

What is the point of the "Lower Quality" option?

Two reasons I can think of:
One, ta save room if ya don't care about quality.

Probly more importantly, for leves. If an order calls fer a stackable item, ya can only turn in same-quality goods. So if ya made two shite ones but the third was perfect, ya were outta luck.

Both are for lazybones mostly, but there ya have it.

Make HQ or Collectable into Normal Quality item, very usefull really, if you get a collectable of low quality that cannot be turned on and instead discard it you make it normal and sell it, or well you needed to turn in a leve that need some ammount of same type of items and by lowering quality you complete that ammount of items. Also usefull to reorganizate inventory.

2 more:

(1) FC crafting (for airship parts or other stuff) require you to trade in like 10 silver ingots.
Let's say you quick synth'd them, got 9 NQ and 1 HQ. And you don't have more ores to craft another NQ ingot.
If we didn't have Lower Quality option, you'd be stuck, having to buy from MB or go gather the ore.


(2) Your level 50ish Botanist got some Old World Figs as collectibles. However, the collectability is so low that the appraiser won't accept those. So you have half a dozen wasted inventory slots with old world figs that are completely useless.
Collectibles can't be sold for gil or used in crafts, but if you use Lower Quality, you'll be able to stack them and sell them to a vendor, put them for sale in the market board,or craft Fig Bavairoisse with culinarian.

Not a lot of use for it but there are a few. I don't think it should be first on the dropdown window though, that's a dangerous spot for it.

The first time I used Lower Quality was for a leve. Got 8 NQ fish and 1 HQ, and I didn't need/care for HQ bonus since it was the end of the night, so I lowered and turned in the 9 NQ. It has its uses.

The worst offender that I can think of was trying to get a Halcyon Rod Supra... fishing the Olgoi Kholkoi fish up. They were a pain in the ass to begin with and you needed 3 NQs or 2 HQs. I ended up getting 2 NQs and 1 HQ and then had to wait for another one.

There are two other reasons, beyond those listed here.

First, Collectables. If you accidently get a Collectable that is not high enough Collectability rating, you can Lower Quality it (down to NQ) to strip the Collectable from it, making it a regular item.

Second, crafting experience. You get base exp for making any synth. You get 50% from rested, 3% from food, and whatever you get from a manual if you are using one. HOWEVER - you can add up to another 300% based on how much Quality you add - but only DURING the synth. Quality added through High Quality items is quality you cannot add during the synth, resulting in a lower maximum experience bonus for using HQ materials instead of NQ.

It gives you a confirmation window and a box you have to check before confirming. It is 100% safe.

It is impossible to make anything foolproof, because fools are so ingenious.

That's one of the corollaries to Murphy's Law.

There are some items on the market where HQ does not sell for a remarkably higher price or sells less frequently based on the recipe. At times hq is not always important (with furniture being the most blatant example on hand). For me, it comes down to not having two slots on a retainers market list occupied by one items so I lower quality to sell in one batch.
But you are right, other items it would be plain criminal to lower quality.
