I like them.
We're getting egi glamour, so that might change.
Improvement in art is something to look forward to when a game progresses. And as it's in a new expansion altogether it's especially the case. But Egi glamours are coming so I think we can look forward to something interesting in the time to come.
I really don't think the glamour is going to be as good looking as the mounts we get but here's hoping!
Why is the sky blue, but tomatoes red?
I really hope egi glamors are great because at present they are hideous.
I'm wondering if they'll even give us new Egi skins, they might just give us Carbuncle skins and save the Egi's for the future should they decide to release any real new pets.
Admittedly at least carbuncles are cute, and actually look far better than the various colored nuggets we have at present.
Like the egi don't even look right or dignified at all. They look like yellow red or green nuggets of play dough. At least carbuncle was cute.
And we all know the development team makes beautiful amazing work... So why not the summons!??!?!! Summons are all to doe ith the main antagonist of the storyline.... And the primal... And I just wish they were more glorified looking.
Tomatoes turn red upon ripening, once the chlorophyll breaks down and lycopene becomes the dominant pigment. And the blue in the sky is a result of blue light being scattered more than other colors by the molecules in the air.
But what does this have to do with why the FFXIV designers have chosen to make one NPC model extremely detailed and another sub par?
Wish people would stop bashing the Summons.
Ifrit looks good.
Titan looks good.
Garuda looks... well ok Garuda isn't great.
Yes I'd make some tweaks if I was in charge, but the way some people go on you'd think looking at them caused your eyes to start melting.
One is typically larger than a player and another is strategically designed to be third of the player size to avoid further clutter on screen during fights.
Why are minions so plain is design as well. It's all because something so small isn't going to justify excessive detail. Increasing art and detail will make something require more space and have something so small in the end require that much more isn't necessary.
Its an apples to oranges thing. Comparing two objects that are not the same object, and asking why one looks better than the other.
Its an argument that doesn't work, because the objects cannot be compared because they are two different objects.
Had the OP said "Why does Ifrit egi look cool, but garuda egi look like cat vomit" it would have been a good comparison because they're both egis.
But comparing mounts to egis doesn't make sense because they're not the same.

Er.. those egis are nearly Lalafell sized. And I've seen some better looking minions.
More importantly, this is what LODs (level of detail) are for, so something close up (regardless of its physical size) can look nice while not chewing up a wasteful amount of resources when seen at a distance. Due to their nature of appearing smaller at a distance more quickly, smaller objects can LOD more quickly.
So, no, once you factor in LODs there is really no excuse for anything looking crappy simply because it's small. An egi can be larger than a mount on your screen if they are the correct distance from the camera.
I don't really mind Ifrit-egi to a certain extent; it looks a little more detailed and shaded than it's two counterparts. However, both Garuda-egi and Titan-egi look like lumps of green and orange; there's really not any detail in either model. They don't need to be any larger, but they definitely need to be a little more detailed. As it stands, they're both fairly underwhelming, especially Titan-egi.
What? I don't have any idea how you could possibly say it was Final Fantasy's main class in most games.
FF1 - No SMN,
FF2 - I haven't played enough
FF3 - Job system where SMN was just one choice amongst many,
FF4 - the SMN was also a BLM and her Black Magic was typically better, main protagonist was Cecil who is a PLD,
FF5 - SMN was just one job amonst many again,
FF6 - no one was a SMN, summoning was a by-product of magicite, at best you could argue that Terra was a summon,
FF7 - no one was explicitly a summoner,
FF8 - no one was explicitly a summoner,
FF9 - First time it could be argued that summoner was the main class with Garnet,
FFX - You are absolutely right that summoner was the main class/focus,
FFXI - Job system, one amongst many,
FFXII - Definitely not the main class
FFXIII - Everyone had a summon, definitely not the main class
Summoning has been in the series for a long time but if we're thinking main classes, I typically think of White Mage, Black Mage, Fighter/Warrior/Paladin, Monk, and Thief/Ninja since those archtypes have existed in pretty much every single Final Fantasy.
nice. :)
You're obviously clever enough to know what I was going for. Like the other person said, this is apples and oranges. The "I don't like how egi's look" topic has been done to death, then back to life, then to death again. Op was trying for a new angle by comparing them to mounts, but there's nothing to compare.
edit: inb4 titan gets called a chicken nugget
I like titan the most he looks like a cheetoh, but they could use a bit more detail or give more for variety I mean for a ramuh egi all they have to do is give you his adds lol, their adds look exactly like the egi styled primals
God help us the idiot who wants to just zoom in on an Egi during a fight, right? Point is, it's there, but relative to how long you're looking at in a fight compared toe everything else going on around you, no, it doesn't need excessive detail. It's wasted effort to make something as detail as Twintania be the size and relevance of a pet.
I'm sorry, but no.
Apples are grown on apple trees.
Oranges are grown on orange trees.
Meanwhile, mounts, characters, NPCs, egis, etc are created by the art team at SE. To compare the quality of one art asset to the quality of another in the same game makes absolutely perfect sense. The expectation to have all art assets within a game meet a certain standard of quality is pretty reasonable.

I like Ifrit and Titan, atleast they have faces.
Not fond of Garuda, if they were going for the pet bird look over demonic harpy they could have at least made it look a bit more appealing.

We all know they can do better, their team is amazingly talented.
I'm 99.% sure the "egi glamour" is a color pallet swap.
-Garuda from "green-yellow" to white using a dye
-titan from oraange to purple
-ifrit from red to black.
I don't see completely new work being done to something already implemented to be honest. You never focus on your pets, you're too busy fighting to notice. The only time you do notice is when youre at a standstill and you look closely.
Let's be honest, the real reason the Egi's look so weak is because... they are!
Our measly little pets account for just shy of a third of our total damage, so wouldn't it make less sense to have some incredibly powerful looking Egi only for it to hit for about as much damage as a cat scratch? I think that would annoy me even more than simply having them look the part.
I must be in the minority that doesn't mind how the Egis look.
My personal hopes are that (SUMMONER STORYLINE QUEST MINI-SPOILER)
In the game they describe the fact we cannot summon other egi (Ramuh) because we lack enough aether, so with SAVAGE primals coming out we know extreme > hard > normal primals aether and so with SAVAGE primals perhaps if we beat them on savage mode we will get enough aether (another quest opens up) to be able to get the egi glamor.
If I was a part of the development team I would strongly have advised this path for handling it. Gives variety, a sense of achievement AND works with the story!
And yet we all expect our tiny weapons to look epic, even though nobody is paying attention to them during a battle, and the only time the detail can be appreciated is when we're intentionally making an effort to inspect them up close. And (as we all know) heaven help the artists if those items don't hold up under scrutiny of the players.
As a Paladin player my sword and shield are an important part of my character. I don't want them looking goofy any more than a Summoner wants any important part of their character to look goofy. I have no interest at all in playing a pet class, and yet even I can understand that simple concept.
That the original poster is comparing mount art to egi art doesn't matter, nor is it "apples and oranges". Because the point is that the egis are lacking compared to the standard of art quality we as players expect of this game on all other levels. So why, therefore, do we give the egis a free pass?

..should hold up as an art asset in the game, and in the opinion of many it doesn't.
I am really not sure why anyone would be opposed to these pet assets getting an upgrade. Throughout the entire game they are sitting there amongst us, in a crowd, in a party, etc, and they always will be. They might as well look decent like everything else.
When I first started playing I saw the Egi's and thought "This can't be right. Those lumps of poo are the Summoner pets? Must be a bug." I immediately reported the appearance of the Egi's as a bug. Now I know it's not a bug. But they still look like poo.
Quoted for truth from the poster below me.
/sigh, I really miss the avatars from FFXI. Loved playing summoner in the final fantasy games until XIV... This egi thing just destroys my soul.
Wow all I am saying is SE said they do not want to add crazy detail to egi's cause of the fact that 100s can be in the screen at one time..... Then we get hunts added to the game and guess what.... 100s of mounts on the screen that are far more detailed than egi's... It's just silly that's all.
oh hey, this thread again.
The summons in this game are by far the most disappointing thing i can point out hands down. Even though summoner is my primary job, given i love pet based classes, i do not like them at all. I will not bother with pet Glamours if they are nothing more than a color change.
while we're at it, can we make pets go passive on mount so that we don't have to re-summon them every time we aggro something and we're still traveling?
They forgot to rename the class "warlock" when they sent it out.
Titan? I don't have any titan egi, or maybe you are referring to "Flying Chicken-nugget"?
Not that I don't agree with you on the issue - a point could be made that those 100's of mounts on screen do cause quite a bit of problem in fates. More then a few have I been in where Odin or what ever that Coeurl king is called just disappear due to the sheer amount of people on screen. But I mean counter-argument is that this situation rarely ever happens in average gameplay. In raids you'll likely only see one or 2 pets out. So the idea that we can't have ultra-detailed summons is just stupid to me.
