Is MCH really that bad?

While I know probably the last thing the forum needs is another MCH thread, this is question that has been bothering me for a few days. Having just leveled MCH to 50, I've read a lot about how the class seems to be lacking in DPS for various reasons and their buff/debuffs are subpar. While I can tell I deal less damage than my DRG, I find it strange the amount of hate MCH seems to be pulling considering how damage is only part of their role (damage being primary, support secondary), I've really enjoyed playing as a MCH but that being said I'm still relatively new to the game and full of noobish delight for FFXIV.

I would like to consult the salty veterans of old Eorzea. Should keep leveling MCH or wait until 3.1 to hopefully tweak some numbers?

The problem isn't that MCH does lower dps then melee, we already knew that would be the case before the expansion. The problem is MCH does lower dps then everybody, is harder to play then bard, its utility is borderline useless and its tp/mp regen is less then bard. Also gauss barrel while supposed to be a dps gain at the cost of some mobility is a straight up dps loss when used for more then just bursting. So as it stands no one is going to bring MCH on raids over bard. The class needs significant buffing to multiple things, hopefully sooner rather then later.

As a former main bard, i enjoy the class much more and is my main now. Im counting on SE buffing the class before too long. So if you like the class stick with it.

a takes a considerable amount of effort to just to peak some of the higher parses out there(might as well be playing a monk or goon at this point for the amount of effort it takes which im considering myself since i have the hive gun and sitting at 180ilvl with 10 extra totems). where warrior hits 1k pretty easily, dark does about 900, smn/blm above 1k smn seems to be pretty strong right now for ravana ex, MNK/NIN/DRG are high 1.1-1.2k area.

just get ready to see people stacking smn and melee basically if a mp/tp regen isn't needed they will do it without a mch and brd

A quick aside. I don't see TP regen being sidelined, unless fights in Alexander are considerably shorter than what we saw in Coil or have tons of down time. Melee BLEED TP right now, and with the exception of MNK didn't gain another way to get it back.

Need tp? stack nins, bard, problem solved. And for mech class, every dungeon that I've had one in, it seemed to go a bit slower, but not as slow as some people want you to believe. I think all the new classes will get tuned up in another patch, dont even worry about it and keep playing what you enjoy.

So, if Ranged Combat is something that a person enjoys, am I understanding it correctly that Bard would just be the better class to play all around at the moment, or should I be considering playing Machinist and Bard Simultaneously, just on the off chance that they provide a buff to Machinist; seeing that Machinist and Bard share their Gear aside from their weapons?

Or should I be considering just going ahead and playing Machinist if that is what I truly enjoy playing? Which it is.

Machinist will not stay in its current state for long. both the US and JP community are vocal about how low both BRD and MCH damage is. Out of the two BRD is parsing higher than MCH but both classes are having trouble with their damage.

If anything, the new classes released undertuned because SE didn't want a repeat of NIN where they had to nerf them. There is a good chance they will be buffed, hopefully in a balance patch before Alex raids begin.

I recommend playing what you find fun, but I also believe it does not hurt to level other classes as alternates. Diversify and have a class to fall back on if need be.

I am a 60 MCH and already quit the job

My FC cleared bis ex with a MCH and BRD. All DPS had i180 weapons, other slots were mixed i160/170 (and occasionally 180) dungeon and law gear. That said, the MNK and SMN did parse a bit higher.

I think SE will give MCH a bit of a boost (and it does need one, IMO), but so far it's not so broken that it can't clear content.

Just wait for the next patch, they'll soon buff it!! As someone said it's probably a good thing its a nerfed job right now, as it can only improve! (We hope anyway :))

I must be a bad player, But I find myself trying to do the main story quests with a MCH and fail just to switch it to a lower level PLD or SMN, I love the MCH, but I hope it get buffed soon

I'm currently ilvl 171 and though we may not be where we should be, I have no problems doing dungeons and don't foresee a problem with the EX primals. Heck, I've been outdpsing equally geared melee in some dungeons with GB on full time. Skill will always beat out class mechanics. That said, we're unfortunately getting a rep for low dps and some groups are kicking perfectly fine MCHs based purely on hearsay, even if they're more than capable of clearing the content. We definitely need some buffs, but I think all the doom and gloom that people are spreading is way overboard, especially if it's causing people to kick players based on their job without even seeing their actually skill.

When tanks do more damage than you, yes you have a right to complain about your class as a DPS.

Yeah, it's not a raid. But at least dungeons are actual combat and not just stationary test dummies, which is where all the testing is being done. I also didn't mean hearsay like we don't have problems-- we do. But it's not bad enough to keep us out of Primal groups. Plenty of other MCHs have done them without issue.

I suggest all mch to start using parser programs, if you want to see how bad it really is, when a boss's hp goes down, don't think it's because of you.

Really? We do absolutely no damage at all then? Must have been the paladin and white mage who downed the last boss in Nevereap when the DRG was pushed off the edge, then. And to think, I could have just sat there posing instead!

Yes, our dps is currently worse than some tanks (I've been hearing Warriors only, though) in optimal conditions on test dummies, and is in need of buffs, but it's not like we aren't contributing any damage. It's that kind of thinking that spreads around the community and gets MCHs kicked from groups. I'm not the best player in the world for sure, but I'll see if I can get a parser. Most people use ACT, right? Used to use that for The Secret World.

In a nutshell. Yes machinist is pretty poor right now.

Is it bad to the point they need to be exluded from content? No. Far from it.

Should you take other classes over them as of now? If you desperately need tp/mp regen for progression, bard is probably your better bet right now.
