Shield and casting should work together not be opposed.

So in ffxi, if you had a shield it was helpful for casting. If you were casting and you blocked a hit it would prevent your cast getting interrupted, which was great for PLDs and WHMs alike. It was great that shield mechanics and casting mechanics went hand in hand.

In FFXIV they are completely opposed, you can't block or parry while casting. With moves like clemency and sheltron coming to PLD it would be nice if the blocking mechanic could be changed to be like in ffxi so PLD won't be hindered by casting and will instead benefit from blocking while casting.

Agreed. It would make sense given both white mages and black mages CAN equip shields that there be some reason to them even having it?

Yeah would be good for whm and blm also, particularly in pvp where a block preventing interrupts could make a fair difference to them.

Parry could benefit from this also and might make it that bit more desirable to Paladins to help prevent interrupts.

... You know, I don't play Pal, but that makes a lot of sense.
Also I keep wondering if they'll ever do the shield thing with BLMs or WHMs again. It feels like it was some artifact of leveling that just gets discarded. I liked my shield! But there are no one-handed weapons to speak of at appreciable iLevels.

Now THIS is a buff I'd sign up for!

Its ironic that white mages and thaums both can wear shields...but they are useless while casting.

That being said---I'd much prefer clemency not even be a spell, but a GCD like flash. It also eats 40% of your mana pool--not exactly something you can spam. Make it interrupt combos and its fine.

Shields still wouldn't be used by BLM/WHM, but it would be a nice feature overall and help ease the interrupt complaints

Rather than an instant ability, I would rather have it be a ~1.5-2s cast like cures, uninteruptable if damage is blocked and NOT interrupt combos

This:
-Prevents GCD timer waste
-Allows sheltron synergy or for it to be weaved between enemy auto attacks, raising the skill ceiling.
-Acknowledges that emergency heals like this ability is tuned for can't wait for you to finish your combo and does not hit PLD where it is weakest, in the DPS

Let stoneskin interrupt combos, it is cross class and the contrast should help emphasise clemency is part of the jobs special skill set

Funny thing is, in 1.0 shield block still worked during casting, and I was surprised when they took it out in 2.0.

Well XI and 1.0 had the same director so it probably worked the same as XI back then, it was a nice mechanic and it would be great to see it return.

As I play new content I can't help but think this is still a needed adjustment, I'm always prepping for tank busters with a cooldown + Shelton, then I think "I could pre-cast stoneskin or clemency to prepare to protect myself right after the tank buster hits to help out my healers". Then right before I hit the spell I have to stop myself and go "oh wait, that would stop my Shelton from working.. Can't start casting until the buster has already hit". By which time I'll probably have to start moving or doing something else or will have already been healed by the healers making it not worth the time to cast these spells.

Stormblood changes so that PLD can't be interrupted while casting was nice, but we still face issues with the shield and casting not cooperating with eachother.

Holy Spirit has kind of emphasised the problem. In shield oath Holy Spirit builds the oath gauge, but if you spend the gauge on sheltron you may miss your block chance due to spamming Holy Spirit preventing you from blocking, sure you could stop casting and wait for a block, but due to the tight window on requiscat if we stop even for a second we lose out on a buffed Holy Spirit. So our only option is to pray a hit gets through at the right time between casts.

If nothing else maybe add an effect to sheltron to allow blocking while casting when it's active.

BLM/WHM shields are a side effect of 1.0. The devs never liked it and, like classes, would happily remove the functionality entirely in the game. Its current state is the best they can do. They will never come back and shouldn't be used as an argument against this; regardless though, I am in full support of the OPs suggestion.

I thought block and parry were removed from pvp. I could be wrong though.
